I think it's important to note that Greg had recently gone through a divorce before New America was released. This song is probably about that.

no one knows what this song means except Greg. however, anyone who has ever cared about anyone, in any fashion, romantically, platonically, family, has to realize the effects that that person had on another persons life. everyone has that one person who was considered that special person in their life who is now gone from their lives. whether the verse

I don't really think this song is about love... I think it's just about positive emotions for another person. Sure it may be interpreted as a love song, but I'm sure that BR can do better than commercial bands. It surely has a double meaning concerning our society in general. I can imagine that it's about the fact that when a big event happens, it's in the mind in an intense way, but after a while, it just goes away and only pictures and vague memories stay.

What if, on some superficial level, this song is about Brett? It was written at a time when BR seemed to be the furthest from Brett as is ever got, musically anyway. Let's be honest, The New America is definitly nothing like the older stuff, or even newer stuff. That's not good or bad. I guess one has to view the lyrics as if they were written for a very close friend instead of a romantic partner, as others have suggested. It's only a thought.
