Does anyone know who the "Mr. Fletcher" is that Brett talks about in 'Walk Away'?

"Old Mr. Fletcher passed by here today,
After 40 years of toil he just up and walked away."

I've been told that it could be about the playwright John Fletcher, but this is pure conjecture (but plausible nonetheless!)

I asked Jay this a couple years ago. He is a fictional character... to Jay's knowledge.

Maybe it's an anagram for "mr. Cher felt old". Bad Religion knew that Cher was actually a guy.

it's certainly not giles fletcher, as giles fletcher did not become 40 years old, so no chance for 40 years of toil :D

maybe it's just a random name for this old man who is described?
Anything but pointless...

Since Billy is Mr. Bretts pseudonym for himself, maybe its his pseudonym for someone else.

I'm 99% sure old mister Fletcher is John Fletcher Hurst. The lyrics seem to be referring to his 1866 work "The History of Rationalism".

I don't know for sure, but it seems highly likely given the lyrical content's correlation to his works. Especially the line "Sunday gloves" as he was known to wear "woollen gloves" when teaching Sunday school according to his biography.
