Your insane. Gameplay was the only thing they got right? Besides that being easily the most important factor in a good game, everything about it is good. Great voice acting, writing, story, multiplayer, graphics, and incredible detail. |

Max spends half of the game running around a locale that I don't give a shit about, in a country I don't give a shit about, chasing after a villain group that I don't give a shit about, trying to save a girl that I really really don't give a shit about. Why
would I care about politics in Sao Paulo, when the only locals we met
in the game are vicious gangsters and rich assholes that step on the
poor? Why would I care about the survival of the woman(and her family) who's so stupid to waltz in a crowded nightclub only a day after an almost successful armed kidnapping? And then Max spent the whole game talking about how he wanted to get shot and die, taking the easy way out, to the point that I really started to root for his success in dying. Why would I care about even Max's survival, when all he really wants is to die. And he tells us multiple times too, as if we're going to forget. What's more, about 60% of the game's dialogue was spoken in a language that I don't understand, let alone give any shit about. Gone was the noire feeling and the comic book story telling aspect that Max Payne did so well in the past. New to the table is "look how drunk and fucked up we can make the player feel, with bright blue and green flashes to make sure you can't see shit" The game actively tries to make you hate its
characters. It makes you hate Max because he's whining about how his
life is. It makes you hate one of the girls (and doesn't introduce you
to the other until around the time she goes "I'm pregnant!") and one of
the guys. You aren't introduced to the bad guy until near the end, and
you're like "wait, what? Max is screaming at the dude like he knows him
personally; I've got no idea who this fuck is." A huge problem
with the game is that there's simply no reason to be invested in the
characters. The game's so damn cynical that it literally makes everyone
you meet not someone you want to care about. Max constantly talks about
how he hates everything. People betray you. There's no one to root for.
It's a lot like being depressed on a day where everyone's oddly mean
towards each other, except for the cokehead party boy, who is just... a
cokehead partyboy. There's no reason to care. In Max
Payne 2, I grew to like Vinnie Gognitti. I loved Mona Sax. I liked Mike
the Cowboy. I liked--until he betrayed me--Vlad, my dearest of friends. I
liked Max. In Max Payne 3, everyone sucks. Everyone whines.
Everyone betrays. Most people are barely introduced, yet Max seems to
harbor a deep personal hatred for them as individuals. I liked one guy in the entire game. The best moment was when a character who betrayed me sort of redeemed himself, and when I tortured and maimed two people. It's like, trying to make game about Paris Hilton eating breakfast. Whatever you do, it's still a piece of shit because all player wants is for the "protagonist" to shut up and die already. |

Wow, I couldnt even get through this whole novel of a post but seriously, if you didnt like the first two games your not going to like it and if you did you're just a fanboy and your not going to like anything that strays away from the originals. The game is amazing and theres nothing you can say that will stop true fans from enojoying it. You clearly try to not like certain games. And if you didnt like the characters you clearly missed the point. Its like Man on Fire only a video game version with all of the Max Payne glory. Being a huge fan I can honestly say Rockstar couldnt have done any better and this is the only way Max can go out in a blaze of undisputed glory, assuming they arent going to make another.
I can't think of a single game where I felt more attached to the main
characters and actually cared about the story. Not to mention the
multiplayer is fucking awesome.

How can you say you didn't bother reading my post and then tell me how I think?
Max Payne 1 and 2 were two of the best games ever made. The thing that really sucked the player in, in my opinion, was the brilliantly written monologue. It was poetic and romantic and completely cheesy, and only had an ATMOSPHERE of hopelessness. Max Payne 3 threw all that out the window and put all their money on hopelessness. We had lines like, "I had taken on the role of the mythic detective: Bogart as Marlowe, or as Sam Spade going after the Maltese Falcon. To unravel all the mysteries, following a path of clues to that final revelation, even if it would take me down to the cold, cavernous depths of a grave." Replaced with lines like, "I was a dumb American in a place where dumb Americans were less popular than the clap." That's what breaks it for me. It wasn't Casablanca or Dragnet anymore, it was Live Free or Die Hard. Furthermore, the lack of that distinct style, mixed with the huge setpieces and setting in South America, made me feel repeatedly as if I'd somehow gone into third person mode while playing Call of Duty. I mean, the similarity really was unsettling - this could easily have been GTA DLC instead of Max Payne 3, and would be far more suited to the atmosphere and tone of that series. I disagree that Max Payne 3 threw anything away. This game, in my opinion, took the serious in a new and very necessary direction. Yes the film noir aspect is gone, but it works. Playing through it for me really felt like a powerful revenge story in that Max is trying to redeem himself, but at a certain point he does realize its hopeless and thats where he reverts back to the man with nothing to lose. The hopelessness is what Max Payne is all about. He cant fix the past and he continues to do what he does best, kill. Max Payne is a killer and it's what he is meant to be. The game still continues to create and progress a character study that is unmatched. The only other game I can think of that comes close to the series is Half-Life.
The line you mention about dumb americans wasn't the shining moment of dialouge, but their are some amazing lines that truly feel, to me anyway, like a more evolved Max Payne. I especially loved the idea of him shaving his head in way of saying he turned a new leaf. I'm not surprised that some people are against the change, but thats expected. It really deserves the acclaim it's getting. I also believe that the first two games are two of the best ever made. |

Do you speak brazilian or portuguese or whatever it is?
edit much better response btw thanks, there's debatable points there - I don't have much more to add to my novel though, already addressed my POV on much of the same - just curious if you speak Brazilian. I might've enjoyed it more if I did. Not including english subtitles was a retarded choice in my opinion, particularly since about 60% of the dialogue (probably the dialogue that would actually invest me in the characters and game) is brazilian or portuguese or whatever the fuck. I did really enjoy the NJ scene, but the majority of this game (and I did finish it) felt like an arduous chore instead of a game. Edited by Gravel - 05/29/2012 at 14:27 |

I haven't played that game, so could you please explain one thing to me: 60% of the game is in Portuguese, but without subtitles? How stupid is that??? |

Nope, I speak English and only English. I really didn't notice the Portuguese or whatever that much, but maybe since I don't speak it I blocked it out. I liked that they didnt add subtitles entirely since Max doesn't really speak any of the language it kind of puts you in his situation.
Also, thanks for acknowledging my more debatable post. I was quite drunk for the previous one. One thing I actually found incredibly frustrating about this game how they throw huge waves of enemies at you and being that I beat it on hard with free aim some parts had me raging. I wouldnt knock it before playing the game. The lack of subtitles doesn't really derail the story in my opinion. In fact, I think it may even hide details that are meant to be revealed later on. |

What I meant to say when I was referring to Half-Life is that the characters are really likable and I feel very attached to them much like how I feel with Max Payne. Also, I was referring to Half-Life 2 and the two episodes after.
And that those games have terrific dialogue. |

The thing that annoys me is the abundance of (very) lengthy cutscenes. Not just with Max Payne 3, but with most games I play nowaydays. I just want to play the frickin' game, not watch a movie.
