As promised in the news yesterday, here's the first topic dedicated to a single Bad Religion release. Today's release is:

The first (Self titled) Bad Religion EP
(1981)

Some reading:
  • Discography
  • Song interpretations are quite scarse for the 6 songs on this EP, so feel free to add your own (as long as they make sense, of course)
  • Also, don't forget to rank the songs for this release
  • The Answer
  • Be sure to check out that magazine ad for "The original" 12" re-release from 1984!
  • Also check out the short audio clip on badreligion.com, where Brett goes into some details about recording the EP
Off you go...

Interesting that the song writing credits were split evenly even back then- three each to Brett and Greg G.

I still don't get why the text "The Original" was added to the 1984 re-release. It makes it sound like there were illegal(?) copies going around or something?

I reckon it had to do with Into the Unknown, I think that 12" reish came out right around that time and some people were kinda bummed

Regarding the layout. For me this is pure punkrock! So fucking beautiful!

1. Bad Religion 8/10
2. Politics 10/10
3. Sensory Overload 7/10
4. Slaves 10/10
5. Drastic Actions 6/10
6. World War III 10/10

This time around i was 7 years old and were listening to Kiss, Magnus Uggla (Swedish punk) and Noice (Swedish punk)

To be honest, I've never been a huge fan of BR's early work. I've always wondered how it would sound if they were going to rerecord it. The only song that I really dig is Drastic Actions. The artwork is classic though because of its simplicity.

Also, when looking at the pictures I wonder if the "I Don't Belong" on the guys jacket has been a inspiration to write the song "I Don't Belong."
Gotta use your brain, it's the most important part of your equipment.

The only good track off this release was their self-titled song. The only other semi-decent one was Slaves.

I'll have to skip giving song interpretations of these early works because they lack substance, only offering passion and aggression.

It's not until the next release where their music is actually worth commenting on.
It was only rain

Ditto (to Jesse) - I love Drastic Actions!!  Sensory Overload is a cool song too. Not a huge fan, but do still like listening to these songs.

Politics is my favourite here, great song. Slaves is great too, and Drastic Actions very good. About the self titled song i pref the Back to the Known version, much better vocals. Sensory and world war 3 aren't bad, but aren't great either.

So I guess this is the right place to say that I paid shitloads of money to get the 1st copy of this years ago... I paid way too much and the record isn't even in good condition, but I was a newbie at collecting records
, so I'm half forgiven....

+ the re-released by epitaph last year have killed all interest in owning such piece of record, IMO...

I think i hate re-releases...

Money proves the point and I'm stuck between summer holiday versus punkroutine

Am I the only one who loves this EP? Not a bad song on it!

I read somewhere "You Don't Belong" was inspired by it! :)

Yeah but  I was always wondering if re-releases makes the original ones losing value or something...

If there was a new release of ITU, I'd be pissed.. mostly.

I think i'd probably have to buy the re-release but they never really compare to the real thing, other than theres bound to be a few wankers on ebay trying to pass off re-releases for originals

I've always thought album re-releases worked the same as with books, where the first edition is the one people pay a premium for, then pay a bit less for the second edition and so on.
I'd still pay more for a first release than a second (or later).

But that's just me.  : )

And the other problem is (especially with ebay) that's it's usually just someone trying to sell the record that has no clue about bad religion, and can't understand why you want to know what address is on the back of the album, or what year the release date actually is on the cover!
