Part of the countdown to the release date of The Dissent Of Man on Septemeber 28,  here's the third topic dedicated to a single Bad Religion release. Today's release is:

Into The Unknown
1983

Some reading:
  • Discography
  • Some songs on this album don't even have song interpretations, So feel free to add your own (as long as they make sense, of course)
  • Also, don't forget to rank the songs
  • The Answer
Also check out the short audio clips on badreligion.com, where Greg and Brett tell a bit about playing the ITU songs live and the misstep that they think this album was.

  • Extra tidbit 1: There's only one known bootleg that contains ITU songs. Apparently this bootleg was recorded on 3/31/1983 in Long Beach, Ca. However, this contradicts with Greg's statement in the audio clip on badreligion about having only played one show with ITU songs, in San Francisco. Either Greg doesn't remember or the bootleg information is wrong.
  • Extra tidbit 2: Only recently we found out that the song Billy Gnosis was also played live in October 2000.

This album is an interesting step, but I'm actually glad the band regressed from it. I read somewhere that Greg Graffin said, that it sounded like R.E.M.and I don't really agree with him, but it is interesting to think of what Bad Religion would of sounded like if they'd have gone the indie-alternative route, a lot of those bands mention some of the same influences of late 60's/70's pop that BR talks about (minus the punk bent).

Piece of shit.

Actually I wouldn't mind hearing Chasing the Wild Goose as a solo acoustic song by Greg. I don't mind It's Only Over When... and The Dichotomy. Losing Generation is kinda interesting, but mostly I really do think it's crap. A brave album considering what came before, but yeah, crap.

I absolutely love this album. Sure, it's not "punk" and it's not what people expect, but screw that. Almost all songs on this album have a true Bad Religion feeling to them. They only need to be sped up and tweaked a little. Especially The Dichotomy can easily be turned into a "regular" BR song.
Remember what Marty McFly said in 1955 at the Enchantment Under The Sea dance after he played that guitar solo? "I guess you guys aren't ready for that, yet. But your kids are gonna love it."
The world wasn't ready yet for what Greg and Brett were trying to do, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. Although it seems a lot of people do think that way, which is a shame.

Love this album (i am a fan of some prog rock too such as Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, early Genesis). My top two: Lost Generation, Time and Disregard. Featured in my sleeping pill compilation: Million Days

I love this record.....not as much as the other BR albums....but it's still a great record and DEFINITELY a Bad Religion record in tone & lyrical content. No matter what music you surround him with- Greg Graffin & his lyrics are inescapably Bad Religion to the core. Losing Generation is my favorite song for obvious reasons (I'd love to hear an updated full electric version....but that ain't happenin' haha.) Other favorites- Billy Gnosis, It's Only Over When..., ....You Give Up, and Chasing the Wild Goose. As  I said....the lyrics are undeniably Bad Religion lyrics and even the song tempos sound more suited for punk rock. I have listened to the songs performed on the "All of Our Yesterdays" bootleg (which is slightly sped up) and they sound great (one of you told me it wasn't a real bootleg....but I don't see how that's possible.)

This is an amazing album, it's just a major departure from the typical Bad Religion sound. Although the lyrics deal with similar stuff to their other albums and, like Marty said, they only need to be tweaked a little bit. Million Days and Time and Disregard have such great lyrics and melody, and the piano on …You Give Up is amazing.

I actually like this one more than No Substance and New America. It's a better record for it's style, even though i prefare punk. With better production it could rival most prog/folk old rock albums i think. While it isn't a huge favourite, i find no song lacking. I think my favourite would be Losing Generation.

oh cool thanks Marty...so it actually is a legitimate Bad Religion live recording...I don't remember but a while ago people were saying it wasn't but it sure sounds like BR to me. Anyway- Neil....are you just looking for the MP3s? Or the actual physical copy of the bootleg? If just the MP3s......they are easily found on SoulSeek the p2p program....I've had to redownload them every time I buy a new PC haha. As far as a physical copy....I have no idea.....that would be an undertaking.

This album is awesome.  I have trouble ranking this one with the rest of the albums because it sounds so different from the others.  Its Only Over When... is my favorite on this one.  I dont have this on cd so I dont get to listen to it that often.

My bootleg of All Our Yesterdays has a performance of "...You Give Up" which wasn't on the track listing.

Btw, I fucking love ITU. One of my favourite Bad Religion records.
I owe Jabberwock coffee.
I owe RoboPilgrim 9p.
