Part of the countdown to the release date of The Dissent Of Man on September 28,  here's the nineth topic dedicated to a single Bad Religion release. Today's release is:

Against The Grain
1990

Some reading:
  • Discography
  • Looking at the song interpretations, I think we can do better than what we have right now. So feel free to add your own (as long as they make sense, of course)
  • Also, don't forget to rank the songs
  • The Answer

Also check out the Brett's audio clip on badreligion.com about recording Against The Grain.

One of my favorite BR albums!  My top 5 songs are Flat Earth Society, Anesthesia, Modern Man, Faith Alone, and Digital Boy.  Runner up is Operation Rescue.

This album, in my opinion, bridges the gap between the old Bad Religion style to the new Bad Religion style(if you know what I mean.. Old BR is more hardcore, and new BR is more melodic)

The most complete bad religion album and likely the one that best shows off bad religion; the bridge between the old school early la punk and the sound they were pioneering/leading in the late 80s and that of the later sound..  So many great tracks here, this is surely a listen to the whole album type deal - no skipping no mix tape, but the ones I love the most:
unacceptable, walk away, get off, faith alone (Great slow-down song), god song - the whole flippin album
The perfect ending to the holy trilogy, and to me, bad religion never gets close to this level again - generator is a great album, but a small percentage of any of the last 3 albums

Absolutely (together with RFH and TGR) my favorite BR album of all time. Everything about this album is just brilliant. The first song I heard was the live version of Operation Rescue on Tested. I was immediately hooked and so I picked up ATG. Modern Man is definitely the best album opener ever; just like Walk Away is the best song to end an album with! My favorite songs are Against The Grain, Flat Earth Society, Faith Alone, God Song, Operation Rescue, Misery and Famine and of course Walk Away. Also, this album is the beginning of the melodic BR sound (though I've said this as well when reviewing ITU).

The artwork is absolutely with no doubt the best one ever! The colors match perfectly and the image fits very well to the album title and song.

What else can I say: just a must have for every BR fan!
Gotta use your brain, it's the most important part of your equipment.

This is my favorite album.  It has the perfect mix of fast and slow songs.  My favorite songs are Modern Man, Operation Rescue, Entropy, Anesthesia, and Turn on the Light.  I like every song on it so its hard to rank them.

Nice sound, some incredible songs along with some incredibly boring songs too. Modern Man, 21st Century Digital Boy, Anasthesia, Flat Earth Society, Faith Alone, Walk Away and God Song are among their best work. Many of those song I LOVE! However the reason why I don't rank this in my top 3 BR albums is the quality of some of the pther songs on this album. For instance Quality or Quantity, Misery and Famine, Unacceptable, Blenderhead and Positive Aspect of Negative Thinking really bug me... I want these songs not to be on the album. Entropy, Get Off and Turn on the Light are okay songs though.

Anyways it's a good album nontheless and I enjoy it's top songs regularly.

Good god, just listened to this twice back to back - I don't understand how anyone can take anything after this point over this album at least - (let alone the previous two).  47 tracks without a shit one.
There are a few periods of rock that stand up and above others, and notably they are these:
Dylan '66: Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 revisited
Beatles transitional period: Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver
Bad Religion holy trilogy: Suffer, No Control and Against the Grain

All 3 went from something totally different into a period of quick and absurd growth and proficiency, albums that changed what was to come in music, and then off to something else, none of the 3 were ever better than during these outpourings.

One of the best albums ever made by anyone ever. I love the cynicism in Greg's voice and the sound of the guitars. There's a good selection of hardcore fast songs and the more melodic slow songs.
Go on take a swig of that poison and like it

I remember picking this up simply because it had the most tracks on it.

Just terrific.  I head this before No Control and Suffer, but after No Substance so I had no idea what to expect but was damn surprised to find one of the finest records I've ever heard.

Against the Grain version of Digital Boy, FTW!

Amazing album with amazing songs but some filler. Misery and Famine and Quality or Quantity just don't mesure up to the rest of the album.

On the other hand, Anesthesia and Modern Man FTW!

I love Quality or Quantity - did anyone realise that Unacceptable and Quality or Quantity have the exact same first two chords?

Love this album so much! :)

Wow, re-listening to this CD has made me realise how much I love this album , and I really like the artwork. If I was brave enough, I would have it tattooed somewhere, but I don't like pain.

Favorite songs from this album:

Walk Away - one of my favorite BR songs

Modern Man - love the guitar parts and Greg's voice

Anesthesia - another favorite, definately has that "chill effect"

God Song - reminds me of a school trip to Germany, I bought the tested album while I was there and listened to it non-stop while we were travelling around on the coach... instantly fell in love with this song, same with Operation Rescue

Flat Earth Society - another chill effect song

Faith Alone,  21st Century Digital Boy, Against the Grain, Unacceptable, Blenderhead - all amazing songs.

I like the rest of the album, but the above 11 are the best in my opinion.

A great album!
