Hi guys,

Yesterday I listened to the new Misfits record: The Devil’s Rain, you know the one that was announced 6 or 7 years ago and that is finally seeing the light of day on October 4th.  I had no high hopes for this album, I wasn't expecting it to be any good and to be honest after listening to it once it's not as bad as I expected it'd be.

It doesn't feel like a half-assed product, after all, it’s taken them so many years to release new material.  It feels like they really tried to make a great album and I'm guessing producer Ed Stasium has something to do with that.  It's different from previous material.  There's still a Misfits vibe and obviously it has horror film and science fiction film-inspired themes but it’s also slower paced and more metal oriented.

To me it sounds like Graves' Misfits meets Osaka Popstar and the Ramones (if that makes any sense) Jerry sounds a lot better than last time I saw him (live) 5 years ago which is kind of normal considering these are his songs, not Glenn's or Michale's. However, he does sound flat and monotonous.  I don't know how to explain it, well if you look at TDOM, Greg's voice goes on par with the music (Resist Stance vs. Won't Say Anything) whereas here Jerry Only sounds pretty much the same on each track regardless of the music.  At least that’s how I felt it.

After one listen, the songs that stood out to me where Land of the Dead, The Black Hole, Father and Monkey's Paw.  The music on Jack the Ripper is nice too.  "Unexplained" lyrics are very poor and  Sleepwalkin' has to be the worst Misfits song ever written.  Death Ray sounds like a Samhain song, can't remember which one.

All in all, it's an ok album, I don't think anyone expected it to be a new Earth A.D and that's good cause when you get your hopes too high it's easier to be disappointed.

Misfits used to be my favorite band, then I "discovered" Bad Religion and all that changed but it's still a band I like so I'll give it a few more listens.  This record is doomed to be the worst on their discography if compared to Danzig's or even Graves' Misfits and that’s what we shouldn’t do.  This is a different band and it should be appreciated for what it is and not what it should or could have been.

May the Fiend be with you  :p

Dunno what to think about newer Misfits but at least 'American Psycho' was and is one hell of an album!!
No bad songs on that one I can say!.. Though, some might not agree with me, which is fine by me..

I'm afraid Jerry Only always sounded 'flat' (as you say) to me as a singer ... but I'll give it a try.
Anyway 'Land of the dead' has been out for I think several years now, and I don't think I've listen to that song more than once or twice.

Kinda sad - I'm driving 5+ hours to Chicago to see the Descendents at Riot Fest. I only need to leave 3 hours earlier to see the Misfits too. But somehow, I can't get excited about it.

I can't make heads or tails on whether or not to buy this. The Misfits are one of my all-time favorite bands, but their output is something to ponder over. While I must admit I have a real guilty pleasure in the American Psycho album, it's the only Graves-era record I like.

I did, however, like Land of the Dead when the single came out, but the Twilight of the Dead b-side track felt really half-assed compared to the Land track. I might just bite my lip and go for it anyway, hoping for something at least parallel to Graves-era. I really do like Jerry's voice, it's got the solid baritone voice built for '50s-tinged horror punk (but not as good as Glenn's).

Actually, a thought ran across my mind when I listened to their discography last night--they have two former members of Black Flag on board, Robo and Dez Cadena. Those guys seem to be pretty solid when it comes to hardcore punk, so what if they try a parallel to Earth AD, Misfits' hardcore punk album? I wouldn't be disappointed in the least, but I'd still be very picky about it because I can't really help it.

While we're on the subject, I couldn't help but show you guys this Misfits flag I made using my own hand-drawn/cut stencil, roughly 36x48. Roughly 20 days from today will be the 2-year mark since I made it--my brother's band was doing a Misfits cover show on the night before Halloween and asked for me to do the flags, so I made three and kept one of 'em.

Just found out that you can listen the album here: http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/#/4

Listened to it first time now and didn't expect much from this but hey, it was pretty good! No new tricks, so it could have been a little bit shorter than 16 songs. But good old punk rock with "woo-oh-oh's" thrown here and there. Me likes.
