This is the album I'm most anticipating to come out this year. It's been taking a long time, though I guess it's better that they not rush things and get things right. I hope this album will be released soon!

Really? I feel bad for the state of music if people are looking forward to a Pennywise album.

He's not.... but from the few clips I've seen on YouTube, Zoli is trying really hard to look and sound just like him.

Reason To Believe was solid to me, but I'm not super excited about a new album.
Saturday I was watching some old downhill vids at a friend's place and one had perfect people playing as background music, which made me want to see them live...they're always fun... I'd also like to ear more new stuff from randy bradbury's sideprojects, I loved "antonio villaraigosa golden expressway" by 84 day syndrome/gluefactory, which is pretty unknown for some reason I can't understand! |

I think it's a legitimate opinion if people think that Pennywise can't exist without Jim. However I think that it sucks that Jim left, though it's better that Pennywise continue with a new singer than break up because Jim left. I realize this is a different scenario since Blink 182 is pop-punk and they're on a major label, though when Tom left in 2005 it would have been legitimate for Travis and Mark to continue on Blink with one or two new guitarists. (+44 could have been the new lineup of Blink). Thankfully Tom returned and Blink reunited in 2009, although I think its unlikely Jim would return to PW. I think Jim leaving PW is a different scenario than if Fat Mike were to leave NOFX, Tim were to leave Rise Against, or Dexter were to leave the Offspring (for example); Jim didn't play an instrument in PW and contributed wrote about 50% of their songs (see below). Jim leaving PW is also a different scenario than if Greg were to leaving Bad Religion, given that he's the only member who's been in the band for its entire existence and has written about 2/3 of its songs. I highly doubt that any of these aforementioned scenarios would occur; the Offspring, NOFX, Rise Against, and Bad Religion would break up if their respective vocalists left. I think each of these bands still has a lot of time left together.
I've heard that when Jason was in the band, Jim and Jason wrote a lot of songs on their self-titled and About Time, with Fletcher also contributing to some songwriting for these albums. When Jim left Pennywise for the first time (around 1992) and Jason moved to vocals, with Randy joining on bass, they wrote the music for about 10 of the songs on Unknown Road and recorded it. After Jason trying to record vocals for those songs, they then they asked Jim to come back (and he accepted); he taught the band about 3 new songs he was bringing in and they recorded them (with Jason back on bass and Randy temporarily leaving the band); plus Jim recorded vocals for the 10 other songs and re-wrote lyrics for 5 of them. After Jason died and Randy rejoined the band permanently, songs on each album (from Full Circle to Reason to Believe) were roughly divided by Jim writing 50% of them, Randy 25% of them, and Fletcher 25% of them. I think (for the most part) Jason, Jim, Fletcher, and Randy wrote songs separately and brought them to the band (with not that much co-writing or jam sessions resulting in written songs), though once they brought them to the band the songs would be changed in some way by each members' suggestions (which is one reason why Jim left). The writing arrangement for the next Pennywise album is completely different; I've heard that Randy has written the majority of songs, Fletcher has contributed some, and Zoli has contributed a little bit. So far they haven't released any new material with Zoli nor played any new songs live since Jim left the band, although people outside the band have said the new songs are amazing and sound like Pennywise did in their early days (e.g. Unknown Road). From what I know, here's the songs I know that PW members wrote; they often don't make this known to the public, since they emphasize that songs change when each member brings one to the band. They're definitely still performing songs that Jim wrote: Jim - Killing Time, Same Old Story, Alien, As Long As We Can, One Reason, All We Need, Western World Randy - Change My Mind Jason - Every Single Day, Bro Hymn, Living for Today Fletcher - Fuck Authority, My God Byron - none that I know of; I'm not sure if he can play any other instruments besides drums. However he does have an important role in arranging songs. While Pennywise has stuck to their basic sound I think it's awesome how they've experimented a bit (i.e. writing a slow song like "Confusion" or a pop-punk type song like "Die For You"). I've heard that Zoli sings more in Jim's range on the new album (and as he has when he's performed with PW since joining) rather than singing really high-pitched like he does in Ignite. From the high-quality live youtube videos I've seen of PW shows with Zoli and the PW show I saw with him, he has a really powerful + amazing voice and stage presence. (I never saw PW with Jim, so I can't compare my concert experience of PW w/ Zoli to PW w/ Jim). I think hardcore PW fans would agree with me that their self-titled and Land of the Free are both punk albums, yet they sound different in some regards (i.e. with Land of the Free being slower overall than their s/t). I think that they'll pull off an amazing album without Jim, as evident when they laid the foundations for Unknown Road without him when he first left (around 1992 - 1993). Btw I also like Randy's solo project!

Got a small collection of records from this band also..
-I'm surely awaiting for this one. I hate the thing that Jim left, but I haven't thrown PW in the trash for that. PW is a fuckin' awesome band! One of my alltime fave punk rock bands ever. 'Land of the Free?' was just godlike! 'About Time' is too an alltime fave classic PW album I treasure very much.. For better or for worse, I'm just awaiting to hear what Zoli does to the band... "Time marches on!!!.." |

I also forgot to mention that interestingly, when JIm left Pennywise, he said that he would be fine with PW continuing with a new singer, and he recommended Zoli. Apparently Jim was friends with Zoli before he left PW, and he still is. I think it's really nice of him to be fine with PW continuing without him (since he really wanted PW fans to still see the band live even though Jim couldn't tour as often as the rest of the band wanted him to, and also so that PW fans wouldn't witness a breakup); and also that he still gets along with Zoli. (Apparently Jim accepted Zoli's offer to have dinner with him a couple of years ago, right before Zoli officially joined PW, so that Zoli could discuss the meaning of Jim's songs with him). Jim definitely knows how to sing all PW songs (excluding the new ones written with Zoli) better than anyone else (given that he was their singer for 20 years), so its awesome that Zoli became PW's new singer given that Jim recommended him. Apparently Jim hasn't talked to the other guys since he's left, though I speculate they'll eventually reconcile and possibly become friends again; they're bound to run into each other some time given how small Hermosa Beach is, and that they probably all still live there.
However, I think that the first Black Pacific album will definitely resemble Pennywise's sound more than the actual new (10th) PW album, since many people still associate Jim's voice more with PW than Zoli. Had Jim not left PW I think their follow up to Reason to Believe would be out by now, and would likely sound like a mix of the sound on the first Black Pacific album and old school Pennywise (i.e. About Time). (Though apparently the first Black Pacific album is mainly comprised of old songs that Jim had written while he was in PW, though didn't want to be used as PW songs). When Jim left PW in August 2009, there was only one unreleased PW song that I'm aware of that they were willing to release - it was their 7 Seconds cover of We're Gonna Fight, released a month later. PW originally started working on their 10th album (and follow up to Reason to Believe) in the summer of 2009, a couple of months before Jim left, although they scrapped what they started and re-started work on their 10th album once Zoli officially joined in early 2010. They'll probably never release the few demos (if any) they managed to record with Jim right before he left, though I'm not sure if Fletcher and Randy have introduced songs to PW since Zoli joined that they had written by themselves before Jim left. I think if Zoli were to leave PW they'd get a new singer, though I don't know what they'd do / if they'd continue on with PW if anyone else left. Randy, Fletcher, and Byron have made it clear that they want to continue PW as long as possible and don't intend on quitting the band.

That wall of text looks like a horribly transcribed mish-mash of various interviews followed by a two line opinion. Frankly, those last two lines are the only part of the post that is necessary. The rest is just annoying.
Yea, I know I'm being mean, but come on dude I don't want to read an article and I'd rather read the interviews from the source. |

No, it will sound just like Pennywise - Fletcher's guitar sound is Pennywise, period, point blank. The big Z will sing more notes, will write some stories not just society and elementary rhymes, but, Pennywise is the big man's guitar. |

I actually like it quite a bit! Sounds like vintage Pennywise, I could see it being among the tracks of Straight Ahead, although that album was a little disappointing and long for its own good.
I miss Jim's vocals.

Bridge and chorus are a bit boring yes, the rest though is very good, even if totally by the book pennywise. I'd say the singing style is a mix of ignite and pw, but i actually like zoli in ignite (especially a place called home area) more than this or the old pw songs he sings live.

I'm not familiar with Ignite... Maybe I should be.
I thought the song was okay. Not crazy about the chorus, but I still liked it enough to listen to it again.
