I for one like Splinter. Rise and Fall was ok. It has lots of good songs, but the bad ones are just awful...

I'm fairly optimistic about the DGB. Of course CC is horrible, but the other two songs that I've heard are pretty good. In fact, I think Future is Now sounds excellent! I just hope they haven't changed it too much in the studio...

Haven't heard more than a song or two from the first albums, can't remember what they're like. As I said I was talking about Smash, which was the first Offspring album I heard, and still is the only album by the band with Americana that I've listened through.
And yes I think Smash was and is poppy as hell, in punk standards. As I said it's no Cruising California, not even close. But many people make it sound like they were some kinda hardcore band back in then. Smash is safe and solid skate punk with whoooooooaaaaas and melodic guitar riffs. Lyrics that are clean enough to get some air play but still be hard enough for frat boys and 15 year olds who want to show they're angry. And all this isn't a bad thing: BR is my favourite band and they haven't been a hardcore act in a long time. All I was and am saying is that Offspring wasn't that hard or punk even at their golden ages (if that includes Smash). Sure they weren't making fucking horrible songs like Original Prankster, but they sure weren't afraid to do their best to get some air play. I wouldn't have liked hardcore punk when I was 9-10 years old but I sure liked Offspring (and Punk Rock Song, hah) back then.

And yeah just to make sure: I have nothing against Smash. I think it's a nice record.

Still you were judging people complaining about Offspring without knowing why they are complaining.

Yeah, I listened stuff on your signature. So that's true punk? I'd say there's difference between hardcore and regular punk rock and if you want to feel elitism from listening hardcore go ahead.

Btw I'm not Offspring fan or anything, I just can't understand you.

This certainly puts the song that I thought sucked on the last Bad Religion, Social Distortion and Dropkick Murphys records into perspective...

Never knew that saying that "something feels silly IMHO" or that I don't understand something meant judging everyone. But okay, maybe it does and/or my point came out more judging than it was supposed to.

Hmmm where the fuck did I say anything about true punk? Where the hell did I judge anyone who doesn't listen to hardcore? For Christ's sake, my two favourite punk rock bands of all time are Bad Religion and NOFX, not the coolest and hardest underground hardcore bands if you ask me. I never said Offspring (or any other band for that matter) sucked for not being hardcore. All I was saying is that Offspring wasn't that hard to start with, which makes SOME of the complaints look weird IMHO.

If I'm an elitist for saying that in the punk rock scale Offspring comes closer to the "pop end" (without calling that a bad thing) then I guess I can live with that.

I kinda could've guessed that by now. But maybe it's just my vague way of expressing myself.

thats all nice and all, but you still havent listened to ignition and their self titled, which are as "punk" as anything ever put out.  so your judgements are a tad off.

Cool! So did they play anything from self titled?

And more importantly: Did they play Cruising California? :)

I heard a few songs from the first album that were on some Punk O Rama or some other compilation, Jennifer something and Thousand Days or something like that (ha I guess I just could go and listen to those songs from Spotify but I can't be bothered right now) and they weren't exactly Discharge. But that's not the point, even if they were that wouldn't have anything to do with Smash being more poppy than SOME people make it look like, which is what I was talking about.

Back on topic: I seriously love how people defend Cruisin' California by saying that it's just a pisstake on modern music. Oh really, I couldn't have figured that out by myself, thanks! But as someone said here earlier that's not how you do a parody. If you make a song that's a complete joke you don't put in on a record, unless you actually think it's a good song and/or will bring you lots and lots of money, which means that you didn't think of the song as a complete joke in the first place. Especially if you're a band that's been making millions of dollars with silly "parodies" in the past.

My point was that until Americana Offspring's music was quite fast and aggressive rock with undeniable punk influence. Then they started to write radio songs and softened as overall. I'd say that's selling out.

Obviously they never were hardcore so comparing them to Discharge is quite irrelevant but was their sound and overall attitude on Smash far from let's say Ramones or Bad Religion?
