My story is just like everyone else's: I too fell in love. I too killed myself just to feel something other than this emotion. I too sought destruction just to feel something less vapid and bound by confusion. I too crawled the depths of despair with salty and arrogant tears, knowing full well my own insolence brought me here. I too walked a maudlin mile, questioning and answering, remembering and reasoning, dilapidated and sauntering and squandering the path of acceptance. I too lost the thread, unravelled the ball, let it roll uncontrolled down the hill without thought. I too traded good sense just to taste something virile and draped in smugness. I too fooled myself just to taste something other than quiet devotion. I too fell in love. My story is just like yours. |

I'd like to extend a thank you to Alice for helping me through toil and strife of the 'smugness' line. I started this poem on Monday (18th June) and reached the final form last night with only one line still giving me trouble. Got that sorted though!

Great stuff. I've never really been into poetry, but since i've learned of Charles Bukowski i've become a huge fan and i've grown an appreciation for writing like this. Well done.

"writing like this" - is that a reference to it being similar to Bukowski? Just wondering because I may have only glanced upon his work after discovering him through the song by Modest Mouse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpDabdSo9FQ Thanks for the comment and reference. Much appreciated. :)

Actually, when I said "writing like this" I kind of meant poetry in general. But this does in a way remind me of Bukowski's work. He is incredible. Check him out for sure.

"Helped" = provide random suggestions until Warstub comes up with the correct line on his own.
But thanks! :)

Oho! A new challenger arises in the Poetry Free-for-All!
This is one of the most... poetic... things I've read in a while. Um, that sounded better in my head... I meant it as a compliment.
I like the message, at least I like what the message is to me. Anyway, it's clear you put a lot of work into this, and it really is good man.

Good job, man. I like it. My life has gone through a bit of a shake up recently, and this piece seems strangely relevant to me. Of course, that could just be me projecting. The only part I don't get is this:

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself. It's made up of two separate words: "mank" and "ind." What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I think "quiet devotion" here would be interpreted as longing in the background, or not letting your true feelings be revealed. Here, the person has revealed these emotions but has found that all it has done is caused pain and suffering, and not the chance of joy and happiness that was expected. Emotion overrode logic in their actions (fooled them), and they are now wishing they had never come forward and said/ did anything.

Quiet devotion is the feeling of peace of when you feel like you're doing exactly what you should and are in the right against whatever you consider wrong. It's one of the levels of the ladder, and yes, there's more lol Edit; Quote boink

Thanks for the very nice comments everyone. Everyone is right about the 'quiet devotion' verse. My own personal interpretation, perhaps the reason why I wrote it, is that I was hanging to the side and resisting the temptation to say anything about how I felt. And because I wanted more than just that 'quiet devotion' I fooled myself into thinking something else was attainable, something draped in verility and smugness... and of course, when you fool yourself that way, good sense goes completely out the window.
This is a reflection poem, looking back on an event. There is another poem I wrote at the time of the event that I would very much like to share.

Very beautiful words. Is it a stand-alone poem, or also lyrics to a song?
