This thread was originally titled XBOX ONE = 1984? but since Microsoft backtracked and made Kinect optional, I've decided to just make this an XBOX ONE general discussion thread.

original post:

Microsoft's new XBOX ONE console is designed to the central focus of your living room.

It can replace your DVD and Blu-Ray players, TIVO or DVRs, and eventually your cable box. It even has a nifty webcam called Kinect that you can plug into the XBOX and use to video Skype!

Two important things to note about this console include:
  1. It http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/connected" rel="nofollow - requires an ALWAYS-ON internet connection to work. If you don't keep it connected to the internet (at least once per day), it will lose its ability to play even offline video games, downloaded movies, etc. The fuck? That's really weird.
  2. It http://kotaku.com/xbox-one-requires-kinect-to-function-509112572" rel="nofollow - requires that you keep the webcam plugged in at all times for the system to work . Wow. What the ACTUAL fuck? How is that even something that needs to be required?

So put these two things together and you realize:

In order to use this console, which is the future of the home entertainment center, currently set to replace all the other electronic boxes under your television, you will be REQUIRED to have a webcam plugged in, watching you at all times, and always connected to the internet. And rest assured, the Kinect WILL be always on. Always watching, always listening. http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Xbox-One-Kinect-Always-Listening-55939.html" rel="nofollow - This has been confirmed .

Sound familiar?

The above quote, from the book Ninteen Eighty-Four, continues:

" It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. but at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You have to live - did live, from habit that became instinct - in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized. "

The only thing Orwell got wrong is that last bit I underlined. In fact, http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Xbox-One-Kinect-Can-See-You-Dark-Microsoft-Says-Worry-56163.html" rel="nofollow - the Kinect can see you in even in the dark .

"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face — forever."

—George Orwell, "Nineteen Eighty-Four"

Oh yeah, and if you think you can just press the OFF button and not worry about always being watched, you're wrong.

The OFF button on the new XBOX doesn't actually turn off the system. It just puts it in STANDBY mode. In other words, It's still watching and listening even when it's supposed to be OFF.

This is easily proven by the fact that you can turn ON the xbox with voice commands.

The sad part is that Apple, the company that made promised to prevent Microsoft's Orwellian reign, is just as bad if not worse than them these days.

Doublespeak.

Our fall into an Orwellian society only requires small, logical steps.

Currently, you can get a http://www.homesecurityguru.com/how-to-reduce-your-home-insurance-premium" rel="nofollow - discount on your home owners insurance by having security systems installed. It applies to closed circuit surveillance systems. Meaning only the owner has access to the video feed, which is  recorded to tape or a computer located somewhere in the house.

But when XBOX ONE and similar always-on, always-connected systems become really popular (and they will become popular), insurance companies will much rather give discounts to people with these instead, since they are cloud based instead of closed circuit.

Having the video located off-site means the homeowner can't commit insurance fraud (arson, theft, etc) then try to destroy the evidence in their possession afterward. Insurance companies would be fucking retarded if they didn't try to coerce you into installing their "home security" app. And how easy a sell it will be to have your security footage safely in the cloud where burlgars can't tamper with it! Who wouldn't download such an app to their XBOX (or similar systems which are sure to come) when you'd get such a great discount for such little effort?

Of course the contract will clearly state "we won't watch the video unless you file a claim, and will only use the footage for claim verification purposes". Sure, you could always opt out, but then expect to pay ridiculous premiums. It would be unaffordable for most people to not adopt the new system.

Very palatable by many people, probably. After all, people don't tend to be afraid to upload all their sensitive and private files to the cloud these days. Or use XBOX ONE apparently. Who cares if we're being watched, right?

That's not much of a problem if you're already a homeowner and don't mind the risk of not having home insurance.

But what if you don't own your home, and want to take out a loan to buy one? The bank will require you to have homeowners insurance in order to protect their investment until you've paid off the loan.

So you'll need insurance to get a homeloan, and you'll need something like Kinect to afford insurance. But big deal, right? The surveillance isn't being  forced on you PER SE. I mean, as long as you can afford it.

Then when everyone is used to the idea of essentially being required to have the system, no one will be bothered when the government steps in and begins regulating those systems directly.

Eventually everyone will have a Kinect-like system. Either by free will for entertainment, or because it makes total financial sense, or because they can't afford not to, or because options narrow as these all-in-one systems dominate the market, or because everyone else has one so it's trendy.

At any rate, these types of systems will be common place. In almost every household. At least, in every household that currently has a video game console, or blu ray player, or cable box or TIVO.

When that happens, the government would be retarded to not take advantage of the situation and use this technology to spy on you in your living room.

Currently the NSA is in controversy for its http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSA_warrantless_surveillance_controversy" rel="nofollow - warrantless domestic surveillance . Meaning they are spying on law-abiding American citizens without any suspicion or probable cause. And you think they won't take full advantage of being able to see if you're doing something in your living room? Fat chance, bitches.

Good luck smoking a bong in your own home. Expect a boom in the for-profit prison system as no one has any room for any "criminal" activity at all, even victimless crimes.

Then the only people with their "freedom" will be the total law-abiding, fearful, and obsequious masses. The kind of people who aren't interested in starting any revolution -- the frogs who sit in the pot as it rises to a boil.

Just kidding, there's no chance of any of this happening.

Every single "step" here is either totally illogical:
  • What motivation would the government have to control people? The government loves following the law and would never spy!
  • Why would banks and insurance companies want to adopt this new technology to protect their assets? They love blind risk!
...or  would be stopped by the people:
  • People are ready to overthrow the government the second insurance premiums go up, right?
  • People will hate the idea of ubiquitous always-on, always-connected cameras in their living rooms, and won't blow off and laugh at the potential risk at all! Right?

Actually the right wingers here are for big government too.

George W. Bush was the one that signed The Patriot Act into law, giving the executive branch the power to do anything they want. Bush is also the one that created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

It's not a left vs right issue at all. Both parties are equally trying to build up the power of government, sometimes in different ways, sometimes in the same ways.

And in all fairness, the lefties have the ACLU, which is possibly the most important organization to protect human rights in the entire country.

Also, I'm a lefty and I am totally pro gun rights.

I encourage everyone else to think this way too.

Though, it will only stall the inevitable.

As long as people still watch TV and play video game consoles, these things will begin to merge, just like our cellphones have merged all sorts of devices. Good luck finding many phones that don't have a camera or GPS.

Oh, and by the way, the government has built-in backdoors allowing it to use your cellphone to listening in on you, even when it's turned OFF.

Let me say that again, if it didn't blow your fucking mind all over the place: Even when it's turned OFF.

First link I found was a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVNNekZpIvw" rel="nofollow - Fox News story (Shep Smith is cool though, so whatever), but if you don't trust their bullshit "news" organization, you can find more info about it elsewhere in more reliable sources.

The Orwellian society is inevitable because frankly the risk to us seems too low, and the benefit of having awesome phones and xboxs too great. We can't stop ourselves. We can't stop 1984 from happening, the same way we can't stop ourselves from burning gasoline. It's just so goddamn convenient. And the next generation will have to deal with the repercussions more than we will. So who gives a shit?

Well when the UN has their way with the latest arms treaty ban, and more flase flag ops occure and when every assault style rifle is out of the hands of law abiding citizens, marshal law/tyranny is the next phase. They will have you think that the fear is jihadist terrorism, but really it is the political dissention of citizens the governments of the NWO fear more. Could you image the difficulties of ten million armed citizens in the streets? Who thinks that government wouldn't suppress such unrest with brutal violent like in Syria? Of course they are all in it together, same with their blood oaths to their secret societies during their university years, that is where they are taught how to keep deadly secrets for the benefit of their order. Think what life will be like in only 15 years, biometrics, drones, CCTV's with facial recognition on every block, there will be no revolt no revolt of rebellion, you either eat the party cake, or the death camp sawdust.

I don't think  that much change will happen in 15 years. Change has to be slow and incremental, so people can shrug it off.

Realistically, the only way for that to happen in the span of 15 years would be if shit really went down.

Something much worse than 9/11. Either  World War III, or a nuke or large dirty bomb dropped on a US city or a very close ally (Canada or England, for example).

If that were to happen, then all those changes could happen almost instantly. Short of such an attack, it's going to take many years.

Luckily, there's a large segment of Christians who believe that government issued biometrics (i.e. mark of the beast) is foretold in the scripture. So at least we have those silly religious nutbags on our side if the government flips out. At least they're good for something. Or maybe they'll be the fuckers to make it happen, since they want to fulfill prophecy? Who knows how they'll react. Either way, they're the same people with all the guns, so I hope they don't flip out and start shooting up atheists.

I say just move away from the cities and live off the grid, and wait to get picked off by the drones.

I really don't think it's going to come to that though. The government will want to control us, not kill us all. Though I suppose control does sometimes involve killing.

Are you kidding? look at the technology advancements in the last fifteen years, you even said it yourself with tracking and eavesdropping with unpowered cellphones. With the technology today, that we don't even know about, think what 5, 10 and 15 years of R& D adds to that. 15 years is probably longer than it will take. I would rather crazy fundamentalist Christians over statist atheists any day.

Also keep in mind that every technological device or program in the consumer market goes through military applications first, sometimes decades before it is ever made consumable for the public. The internet was being used in the sixties. Think about the five eyes intelligence signed in 1946 that became Echelon that monitors all internet networks and cellular communications. As soon as they begin implanting G&E microchips in babies just you wait.

How would the government sell us biometric tracking in the next 15 years without WW3 or a nuke dropping?

Governmental motive: CHECK
Technology: CHECK
Political sales pitch: ???

The government definitely has the desire and power, but they don't quite have our permission yet. Without our permission, changes have to happen really slowly, under our noses. I'm guessing much longer than 15 years.

But if you can outline a scenario where it can happen in 15 years, then I'll give you due credit. I gotta see the logical progression to buy such a claim.

Easy -technology. They already have the means of injecting cells with microchips,
“Silicon microchips can be internalized into eukaryotic cells without interfering with cell viability. Engineered intracellular chips with different biomolecules attached to the surface can be used as intracellular sensors.”

http://scitechstory.com/2010/03/18/a-first-microchips-in-living-cells/

It really wont be long until they can do this to us without even knowing. Though there would be significant logistics and human challenges to this like employing doctors everywhere to interject these chips into people, but nothing is unfathomable. But I agree that there will be a major "terror" attack in the near future, something to reign in marshal law, maybe even a war between Iran and Israel to kick start a third world war scenario. I believe that the powers that be actually want to decimate the earths population levels too. Question everything.

Which only helps if your webcam has a hardwired activity LED (and it's almost impossible for you to know if yours is really hard- or soft-wired), or if you unplug it when not in use (which is increasingly impossible as many computer monitors have them built in)

Not to mention http://news.yahoo.com/u-spy-chief-strongly-defends-surveillance-calls-legal-231159966.html?.tsrc=operaweb" rel="nofollow - the government already spies on PCs since forever.

Though at least you can fully turn off a computer without unplugging it, unlike the new XBOX. Supposedly. Not that anyone ever really does. Most people just keep their desktops on for convenience. Which is really the crux of the problem. We all willingly trade security and freedom for convenience. The risk seems too low right now to bother.

Turn it all off, go back to reading books and playing sports in school fields for fun and recreation, too many kids and adults playing video games and wanking off online and texting on their phones has created a culture of socially inept retards, what will the masses do if a solar flare disrupts the electrical grid for a week or more? How will people interact with others without a keyboard? How will so many get sexual gratification without online porn? How will so many women get by without being able to text their BFF? Nightmare.
