Jay, I am not smoking cigs or taking any nicotine substitutes. Addiction 1. For financial reasons, I pretty much have to quit cigs.

Weed = Addiction 2. Craving (in the absence of nicotine) a toke like to the point where I plan it and make excuses for it and go into denial.

Alcohol = I'm not the best alcohol handler in the world. Addiction? No I would say not. Anyway, I bought beer to alter my brain. Saves it from weed and cigs. I drink once every 6 months.

Do you use substances to replace one craving with something to mask it? If not, how do you (or did you if only in the past) deal with the feeling you're about to slip?

603 days no weed. came oooooooooohhhhhhhhh soooooooo close to rolling up a joint last night. Had no fear of consequences for awhile as I bartered with myself and downplayed the significance of 'one little toke".

Jay, I tried to think of the last 10 days but I've honestly been struggling with what that meant. Is it to see how it went from good to bad? Is it to remember all that has been gained that could be lost? Also Jay, do you consume any alcohol ever? Even cough syrup?

smoking is only a financial concern, so other than ice cream / coffee and other things like gum, candy etc. i would not recommend doing ANYTHING that will put you in a state where you would be at your most vulnerable, ie; drinking a beer would make me want a cigarette, but it would also let me think that having another beer was a good idea, and then all bets are off. feeling you're about to slip is never a pleasant place to be, so thats why people like me would get sponsors and i would call them and talk about what i was going through, because chances are, they went through that too. the answer has ALWAYS been more meetings, more contact with others who are struggling and more work on being honest about our addictions and the ramifications of allowing them to control our lives

no alcohol ever (unless it is unintentional, like a bite of a cake or something)
this is what i mean by the last 10 days.

the day you finally had enough... for me, the day i wanted to stop wasn't actually my last day. i struggled every hour telling myself no, but would invariably cave in and end up drunk and morally degraded. these days spiraled into a mass of panic and remorse coupled with a battle of wills whether to simply give up or try again to stop. for me, these were my last 10 days, and they were the worst days of my life because i had no life, i was simply existing in a blur of alcohol, drugs and remorse. i will never forget this feeling, because this is what allowed me to walk through the doors of my program with enough desperation to stop fighting for control.

Thanks Jay.

Not smoking cigs makes me vulnerable to my pot addiction, no doubt. But like being here on thebrpage hasn't been a trigger since I stated it as such, ironically enough, maybe not smoking cigs can be less of a trigger too in a little while. Since my friend told me to go ahead and roll up a joint with full intention of letting me and telling me it'd cause no trouble... I've decided to put that friendship on the back burner. No more visits to Doc the pot dealer. Duh.

I'd like to go to meetings but I have enough on my plate that takes away from my 40 hour week of work. I end up working weekends (like today). I'll look into PM meetings. Narcotics Anonymous, I guess. I've been googling it but nothing comes up. Will get the MH Workers on it for me. Thanks again.

Ok since we're talking addiction, how much/how often would you drink when you had an addiction you'd say? If that's not a too personal thing to ask..

Ah ok, then i don't think i have an addiction at least. I drank Wednesday, but then my mom actually provided me with whiskey to get me to keep helping her with her skype for 3 hours, drank some yesterday and am wasted now. Rest of the week i excersice and shit and eat healthy. My problems are more isolation, living in a crappy town and other shit. Plus i'm not sure my economy could handle drinking 2 liters a day.

Well i don't think i need it, sometimes i don't feel like drinking. Plus when i was younger i'd drink quite heavily for 2 months, then i would go sort of straight edge for 2 months and not drink at all. When i was younger i'd use alcohol to do everything though for a while, now i learnt to and do most things without it. I just needed some help first ,and used the bottle. Sure if i'm gonna go to another town and see a show or whatever i'll drink. So yeah i don't think it's a problem at least. What i gotta do though is to start drinking at the pub, maybe then it'd help me actually making some friend here, which would actually probably help me out. So i still maintain alcohol is not really the problem, not for me at least, just gotta be an occassion and it can't be everything. Only thing that worries me is my liver e.t.c. That's the reason i try to cut down on my drinking and think about it.

Sounds like you prevent it from being a problem. Are you having success? Like, for example, cutting down over worries about your liver... have you managed to do that? How long did it take, if you did it. How long have you been trying, if you didn't? Wasn't it New Years you mentioned it in the sb?

Ignore me if I've crossed the personal boundary line, Recard.

I don't know if i'm having success, ultimately i know nothing really. I could be completely wrong or whatever. But i feel i gotta educate myself and read about the bad effects about alcohol once in a while to cut down and keep it under control, otherwise i forget and drink what's in my opinion too much/often again.

I changed my new years promise though haha, now it is to drink at the pub instead, not just at home by myself. I'm not gonna go in to too much detail, but part of my problem is isolation, so i figure if alcohol can help me break out of that, it's fine by me. If i drank in "public" instead i figure i could make the kind of connections hopefully that could make me cut down on the alcohol drinking in the future. So i see it as a phase or whatever i go through. Also i had things happening lately that's been out of my control that probably adds to the drinking and i don't have much of a solution for that at the time. So i guess i'm just figuring now, i'm gonna be drinking, but i don't plan to keep that up forever. If that's addiction or if i'm deceiving myself i'm not quite sure of. Guess i just don't think the alcohol is the problem.

Jay,

You're the phantom support guy that my family and friends keep hearing about. Can't let on the BR connection.... anyway you've helped me and I owe you big time.

+2 for addiction being more than the amount consumed but also the dependency and the inability to stop. Nobody can stop me when it comes right down to it. I have control and I've proven it time and time again. In this moment, I'm not putting a joint to my lips. It's moment by moment.

I say that I am addicted to pot. I depended on it to manage stress. I would go months and months without it and then I would get into it full throttle until some sort of catastrophe ensued. I couldn't stop using it for good. Should I say that I used to be addicted? On the one hand saying I used to be addicted makes me feel accomplished. On the other hand, saying I am no longer addicted opens the door or lets my guard down.

btw I wish I could find the post in Ask Jay where you first commented on my pot use. It was a wake up call that I needed. Just to be clear.... I give you a lot of credit for helping but the success (or failure) is all mine. I own it.

So yeah, I digress... the question is are you addicted to alcohol or did you used to be addicted?

I celebrate the small victories instead of beating myself up for the losses.  When I first started cleaning up I focused on being super proud of myself for going a day clean rather than beating myself up for sliding.  Now can I go two? Three?  Jay's "10 worst days" kind of reminds me of this.  Some powerful thoughts here - ty for being so forthright Jay.

Thanks for posting this, because it gives me a lot to think about. I've come to realize that I will probably never escape depression. Not fully, or for too long of a time, anyway. It's the thing in the room. Been drinking a bit too much over the last few months (a mixture of boredom and more recently depression) and if addiction functions the same way... then I need to either cut back a lot on the drinking or stop entirely. A coping mechanism that turns into another trap isn't a coping mechanism at all, just another form of self-harm.

With you guys adding New America and Raise Your Voice to your recent setlists, does this mean another song from No Substance or New America could end up on a future setlist? Maybe In So Many Ways? :)

Gravel, if I could get by on small victories, I just might be tempted. If I slide, it's gonzo. My last 10 days could be worse next time so there is only one "victory" for me and that is 100% sobriety. Worse than the worst 10 days? The repercussions of which I am still dealing with almost 20 months later.... possibly irreparable as it is. No thanks.

You are announced at Copenhell. This could get awkward - quite the audience at that festival. And the prices are high for people only wanting to see you. Hope you do a club show somewhere around while you're here

Edit: my metal-fan-friend just told me that a lot of people at that festival also dig classic punk. Still expensive though.

I don't really agree.  Kim is incredibly talented and I really like Into the White and Gigantic, but I think they're alright without her.  They're making great new music and evolving and she's doing her own thing and that's fine.

Now The Breeders without Kim Deal....there's another story.

off topic: jay, thanks for such amazing show last tuesday here in santiago (chile). i hope BR come back soon to south america :D

on topic: i'm new here  so i'm not sure if this has been answered before

q1. now you are aging around 50 and i suppose that everything in life tend to be quieter.... so, do you still feel comfortable with insane crowds (crowd surfing, stage diving, moshing, slam dancing, etc)???

q2. with 16 studio albums and a bunch of songs that aren't inside those albums, there are another bunch of songs that was never released on any EP or compilation... i'm going to ask you for one in particular, this song: "fanatics" (from the stranger than fiction era). can you tell us why this amazing tune was never released?

thanks again for the amazing show last tuesday, and i'm not sure if my grammar or word choice is correct, but i hope you can understand my questions, greetings! :D

Jay, who writes the setlists?
I mean literally, who sits down and writes out songs and order, I don't care who decides them, but who's job is it to do the physical writing? Do they have to write out multiple copies or do you photocopy them for each person?
