The Dissent Of Man

The Dissent of Man is Bad Religion’s 15th album, and the hard-hitting Cali punks’ aesthetic hasn’t changed much. There’s nothing surprising here except for “Won’t Somebody,” which is a confusing mix of pop-punk, an almost country feel and a derivative guitar riff that sounds exactly like “867-5309/Jenny.” (They should know better, since they were definitely around when that song was a hit.) At any rate, the best parts of the album don’t seem intentional; they don’t feature the band’s habitual fast drums or chord-heavy guitar. Instead, the highlights are subtle and understated, boasting short, well-handled guitar solos and a few catchy riffs. The problem is that there aren’t enough of those moments to carry the album into really stellar territory. If you’ve always loved Bad Religion, you’ll still love them now, but you won’t find much to be excited about.
