I Remember the first time i heard "sorrow" The first song i?ve heared on TPOB and my thoughts was "What is this for kinda reagge shit?" I?ll listen to it again and again and again, and i went sold, i really loved it, and it turn out to be BR again after a while, it was awsome, just like this "What a f*** is this? Some kind of Slow Metallica Ballad?" I Love it sooo hard! BRs New album will kick some ass, and will probably get the best rewievs ever...

Like all the great songwriters, BR have mastered the trick of creating music that demands repeated listening and songs that sounds better and better each time you hear them. With many bands you start to notice any crappiness in their music the more you play them - BR seem to have the foresight to see this and guard against it happening when they are creating their songs.

holy christ, leave it up to a leak of a new song or two for the trolls to really come out. I would like to apologize to the band for the trolls, they do not represent the majority of us whom can coherently type a thought and manage to me mature anthropoids about the concept of music. Also, whoever said that BR's albums have been "crap" since TGR is an ignorant fool. Tiem to grows up guyz, LoL!!!!!
Also, while I said to myself I'd only listen to honest goodbye 3 times then stop (so it sounds fresher on the albm), I've listened to it about 10 or 12 times... this album is going to be amazing.

It definitely has a Weezer vibe going on, but I really like it. I think it's a great mid-tempo song and there's nothing wrong with it sounding different from the "typical" fast BR song. They've been at this for 25 years and have clearly grown as musicians - let them try something different once in a while.

Just for the record...Joe Barresi never produced a Weezer album...EVER!
He did engineer on Pinkerton though.
And now I'm gonna listen to it! Dammit!
And stop bitching if it sucks ass!

Wow, definitely a grower... I really like it now, it has a lot of punch for a mid-tempo song, and I love the way Greg's voice sneers and growls, especially "I wanna know what it meeeaaaaans..." That low-end comes in with age, and it rocks! Brett knows how to write songs for Greg's voice better than Greg :p

I dont want them to sound like the older albums - I just want to hear a great punkalbum from BR. And since TGR they released just shitty embarrassing albums, which are only accepted because of the bands history.
The Last 4 Albums were pieces of crap, so there is the question, why they are still on stage - because the people want to hear were only gonna die and not because of songs like broken.
Im posted here, because its sad, not because im hating this band.

Actually, on a similar note, compare ANY music from a band and that from the same band 11 years later ? OR MORE ? if they are still around. It won't be exactly the same. Compare 1969 Zeppelin to 1980 Zeppelin. Not even close to the same. Compare 1982 Social D to 1992 Social D to 2004 Social D. Not the same. 1992 Pearl Jam to 2004 Pearl Jam. DIFFERENT. If you want Bad Religion to sound like Suffer, No Control etc. go listen to those albums, and enjoy them, they are excellent. But don't come whining and naysaying around here that they suck now because they don't sound the same. they shouldn't.

the song does sound just like weezer, especially the intro solo and some other short parts
but the chorus is absolutely amazing, and even being a little overproduced is exactly what ive liked about br since i first listened to them (without the ahhhs they wouldnt be br)
musical comments aside the one thing that really worries me is the title and some remarks about an 'end'
would this album be their last one?

Like everyone here, first time i heard it sounded like CRAP to me.. I have just asked to myself "WTF???" and then heard it again and again and again, and sing along with the Bretts posted lyrics and then I tought: MAN THIS SONG IS FUCKING AWESOME... a TOTTALLY SELLOUT! God damnit, I even can't figure out what's in the innerlines of lyric but I guess it would really make some success at the rockstations here in Brazil... - Sometime ago I was trying to figure out if BR would make a move to earn money very quickly to reach an end with their bank accounts flooded by money and now I'm sure they're doing that... Another pop song, but a great pop song.. Not a punk-wannabe song like Punk Pop Song, oops, i mean Punk Rock Song (wich is the most requested song on Brazil shows - *n?o ? Henchman?*) but it may score as a sellout..
And, uhh.. It sounds like NA and NS and maybe STF... Go to hell with the "end of a circle" thing, Graffin! I don't know if I'd like this song or hate the whole album...

YEah at first i was relatively unimpressed with Brook's drumming on the track (it's great but considering the hype for his performances that Jay said...) but the more I listen the more it fits.

Hey, better a "Weezer" production by Joe Barresi on a Bad Religion album than a "Tool" production me thinks, and I like Tool.
And as for the "music needs to fit accordingly" theory, we agree to disagree here, at least to a certain degree I guess. Cease's mood for example doesn't change that much when you unplug the electric guitars IMO.

i listened to this song like 10 times last nite and i had it stuck in my head, and i'm glad brett came on here to post the lyrics cos i couldnt figure out if i was signing it right..turns out i wasnt.. but thats ok i still like the song!

Well in those cases the vibe of the song changes too. The album version and the piano version of Cease dont exactly evoke the same feelings, for example. Same goes for Suffer, Sorrow or God Song which Greg played on the accoustic guitar ; so there comes back my "the music needs to fit accordingly" theory. Honest Goodbye would have a totally different meaning if it was a shreder (or maybe no meaning at all?), and Brett wrote the music for the listeners to get into that meaning, accordingly.

Interestingly enough, the fast paced and angry Bad Religion songs work in an acoustic or even synthie concept, too. Listen to some of their demos. So there kinda goes your "the music needs to fit accordingly" theory. And it's exactly THIS fact that makes Greg and Brett great songwriters, not just some random punkrockers.

What I meant is that people thinking Bad Religion wrote Honest Goodbye only to be a pop-sounding / commercial hit song, and bitching Brett for writing a superficial song, are actually the ones listening to Bad Religion superficially. Every Bad Religion song has its concept (so does this one) and the music needs to fit accordingly ; sometimes it means writing fast-paced and angry as shit music, some other times it means writing slower-paced more introvert music.

Classic/Good albums are based upon dynamics. Jimmy Page used to call it light and shade. Heroes and Martyrs and this song provide a good example of this. If ALL the songs were fast and the album would be homogenous and bland. There really isn't a single BR record since No Control that has been like that, and those albums could get away with it because they are so brief. You need slower numbers so that more aggressive songs have impact. If there is a good blend of songs along the spectrum, it will be a great album.
And it is unbelievable that band members participate with the fans like this. I can think fo no other prominent group that can interact so casually and consistently with fan base. It is just terrific.

i dont like judsging songs outside of the album's context but this song is harmless, it's obviously a brett song, fit for radio, and i would say its better than its shorter than 2:50. Btw, i would rather listen to this than anything weezer has made since the blue album.
stop the pants shitting and listen to heroes and martyrs if your disappointed.

If Jed the fish from KROQ got Honest goodbye, he should have a promo cd with more songs on it...Let's find someone who have it too and ask them to leak the whole thing ! I need to listen it right now ! Not in july !

It amazes me how many 'fans' take the time to come here and slag BR. If you don't like them, go to hell.
New song is great, definitely growing on me. Between the melody of Honest Goodbye and the aggression of Heroes and Martyrs, methinks we're in for a great album....
And hopefully an Australian tour dammit!

Someone else said it, but it's true! It sounds like a god damn weezer song. In a good way.
Just not what I expected. Here's hoping the rest of the CD kicks our ass... ATG style.

I really like Brian's guitar solos and agree that a solo would've fit nicely into the song, BUT! the woah-part is definitely awesome - at the end of the day, I'll take a great chorus melody over a blazing solo any day. And it's certainly a great melody, catchy and anthemic.
Also thanks to the guy who uploaded a re-worked mp3 of the song.

Didn't like it much at first, but it grew on me. I prefer the faster songs like Heroes and Martyrs, but I notied that Brett most of the times succeeds in making these really catchy tunes that get stuck in your head for ages, like it or not. It sounds like a revised version of Boot Stamping, and a bit like a Daredevils song, like someone said. I like it anyway, i'm sure it will fit well in the new album. Can't wait to hear the rest! And another thing i wanted to point out is that Brett posted the lyrics of both songs that we came to know, more than 2 months before the album release, on this site (a fan site). Just tell me how many other relatively popular groups would do that. Thanks Brett

Why do you guys have to bitch and moan about every song that bad religion makes? Have any of you dipshits ever tried to write a song??? Well its fucking hard. And Bad Religion have written over 150 songs!!! You have to try writing new material or song writing gets boring and everything will sound the same....I am so excited about this new album. Real BR followers are in for some amazing new material...and all you retards who are so negative about the new songs can suck a huge dump!

This must be one of Bad Religion's shortest slower songs, or is this just a radio edit without the extensive Brett/Greg/Brian triple guitar solo part, Iron Maiden style?
After a couple more spins (yes, I know that an mp3 file doesn't rotate, but I grew up listening to vinyl records, so there) I could do without the "woah" parts - give me guitar solos or guitar harmonies instead. But apart from that it's a good song. Looking forward to hearing it in an album context.

I'm amazed! Quite a few times when I've heard a new BR song, I've thought "This can't be real. It's perfect. Again. It can't be more perfect than that. It's not gonna happen again". But it does! Listening to The Song with the lyrics just fills the cracks in me! Thank you guys at Bad Religion. I love your music! stillagain ;)

Hey everybody, here are the correct lyrics. Thanks for giving a shit.
xo, Brett
Honest Goodbye
Now get up and give in I'll crack your knuckles again
Supplicate and survive this transubstantiation
And get so mean - I want to know what it means
(Did you laugh?) You know I did
(Did you cry?) I couldn't get it right
(Did you live?) Always on the edge
(Did you lie?) Causing such a fright
(Did you love?) Oh to be forgiven
(Did you try?) But it wouldn't be right
God it feels like an honest goodbye
Whoa ho ooh whoa ooh whoa ooh whoa -
That sick brass boy day dreamin' - cry baby convict demon Hands so clean - A sympathetic cold blooded killing machine
How did you get so mean? - I want to know what it means?
(Did you laugh?) You know I did
(Did you cry?) I couldn't get it right
(Did you live?) Always on the edge
(Did you lie?) Causing such a fright
(Did you love?) Oh to be forgiven
(Did you try?) But it wouldn't be right
God it feels like an honest goodbye

For those who care so deeply, or are perfectionists like myself, I patched the hiccup in the first chorus...here is a (near) seamless version:

The more I listen to it, the more I like it. I guess it is radio-friendly like so many other said, but I dont think it was written specifically on that purpose either. I dont think BR wrote this song thinking : "We need a song to be aired on the radio". Id rather think they write and record all their songs and then choose which one of them is catchy enough to be aired on the radio as an anchor for non-yet-fans (which is really the point of airing a song on the radio, right?). I also believe that listening to it in the context that it was ripped from a radio station might makes you feel it is somehow superficial, but the more I listen to it and try to figure out the lyrics, the more I think it is actually pretty deep and obscure ; the slow-tempo is also well justified and fits very well with the the whole concept of the song. It puts me in the same set of emotions as To Another Abyss, The Defense and Better of Dead, and also explore similar topics.

Those hearing a similarity to Bon Jovi are right. The woah-part sounds a lot like the chorus of Jon Bon Jovi's "Jani Don't You Take Your Love To Town". If you don't believe me, listen to the song on youtube.
That being said, the song kicks all kinds of asses and has grown even further on me since its initial playing. Both Honest Goodbye and Heroes & Martyrs wield an incredible hook and fairly atypical verses - REALLY looking forward to the album!

This reminds me of a few songs on New America. Here are the words, as far as I can figure them out (not to sure about the backing vocals on the chorus):
Now get up and give in
I'm cracking knuckles again
Supplicate and survive
This transubstantiation
And get so mean
I want to know what it means
(Did you laugh)
You know I didn't (Did you cry)
Couldn't get it right (Did you mess up)
Always on the edge (Did you ?)
Causing such a fright (Did you know)
I want to be forgiven (Did you try)
But it wouldn't be right
God, it feels like an honest goodbye
That sick brass boy daydreaming
Crybaby, convent demon
Hands so clean
A sympathetic, cold-blooded killing machine
How did you get so mean
I want to know what it means

Hey, Not Bad. It isn't any thing like Bon Jovi! BR have been around for 27 years now, if you are expecting this album to be like "How Could Hell Be Any Worse," It just isn't going to happen. Every band changes over time, Bad Religion included. "Honest Goodbye" is a great song and it does not sound like Bon Jovi. That is ridiculous.

Haha its quite funny. there was the same discussion about the slow-song-thingy a few years ago , when we heard sorrow and can't stop it...i think there will be 1-3 slow songs on the CD...the same number as usual.
But i can remember as well that BR said all the time that "the new album" is gonna be more like against the grain..(it started with the new america). So forget about that. its going to be a good NEW album...

bs, there's only been a couple of attempts at working out the lyrics and it's not like anybody has tried to work out the whole song. Not that there's anything wrong with that. And does it really matter if they make a few mistakes in the process?

This is good but nothing too spectacular; reminds me of "Streets Of America", from a songwriting and a production standpoint.
I knew that an outside producer would bring back that broadband sound from the Brett-less period. So this will be the first BR album with Brett and a huge heavyrock sound. Andy Wallace's production and mix on "Stranger Than Fiction" was pretty contained compared to this.
The fast songs will sound pretty 'metal' I guess - and I like my metal. Although I'd maybe prefer a more unpolished production and mix on a BR release ? la "Who We Are" (which is a criminally overlooked gem). But OK, let's wait for the new album...

bs, you're just a ball of sunshine. What's wrong with entertaining lyrics? Are we supposed to be obedient fans in some fucked up world where rules what we are allowed to sing is carved in stone? As if we need to listen to a hypocrite like you! You're fuckin' giving your opinion on lyrics as you tell us to quit. What makes you anything less than half-assed and what makes you think that I was sure of anything?

The song is very good by the way, it couldn't be more Brett. He really knows how to write good catchy songs. Greg does too, but not in such a fashion.
I don't like the all too sweet way they do the whoas though. I like whoa ohhhs, not whoa ooohs. There's a big difference, try pronouncing both.
It's still really good though, switch the back-up vocals to whoa oh instead whoa oooh, and it's perfect as a bad religion pop song for me.
I know, they won't do that, but that's the only gripe I have with the song.

Half of you can't even spell, let alone figure out correct lyrics to a song by ear, so stop trying so hard.
Some ass was sure Greg says "Court? Get it right!" in the chorus. Well, good luck to you. Jesus.
Hint: "Couldn't get it right".
Anyway, stop trying to make half-assed lyrical attempts at the song, just wait for the official lyrics, and we won't have shitty errors like all these attempts end up with.

Sounds like a Daredevils song. Maybe a song Brett wrote that he planned to put in the second Daredevils album before he got arrested for drugs?

After a couple plays I?d say that it?s not as great as LA is Burning, Infected or their other radiofriendly songs. But it?s not bad, propably end up loving the song.

This is a really good song. i think the backing vocals are great. The 'ouhouh' chorus vocals are exactly like the Skids on Days In Europa and The Absolute Game. Slower than i expected but all their albums have a few of them. Just be grateful that they can write teriffic fast AND slow songs.

The "oooooooo oooo" part sucks, but the rest is good. Someone said it?s like a Daredevils song. I agree. And it?s too much overproduced or underproduced like Yulia said. TNA and NS songs are much better than this...

At first, I didnt find this song too good... But after listening to it about 10 times and paying attention to all the little details, I really enjoy this song. This is the new Bad Religion and it's really nice It's different (like heroes and martyrs verses). Hope there's a lot of suprises like this for the rest of the album. :)

Not bad... It's different to the other slow songs at least - there's no originality issues like with Epiphany/To Another Abyss, but if this was written by Brett I suppose there wouldn't be! I wouldn't judge the album by this, as people have already said. I still like it, but yeah the oozin-aahs sound overproduced - they sounded good on TPOB but since then I haven't liked them, you can't hear each band member's voice like you could on the older records.
Still, a good song, but we can expect better things from the album!

OK... I listened to it once again. Now it sounds not so bad :) but it's realy too overproduced and those "whoa-whoa" in the chorus spoil everything. I hope that this song is the worse number of the album...
too overproduced... or may be it's better to say underproduced

I'm not sure what people are complaining about. It's not like Bad Religion hasn't written any pop songs before. This is probably the single for the album, so it's obviously gonna be a more radio friendly. They've had at least one or two of these pop-rock songs on every album since Generator.

for what i remember, every bad religion album since generator have, at least, one slower and melodyc song in it, so it was not a surprise for me.

Wow, what a great song. I know people were expecting more "old material" but again, they still were adapting to new forms of style and I think this is one of them.
I am really enjoying this song, I think it sounds like Bad Religion, yet at the same time, it doesn't.

Definitely sounds like it's going to be their one "radio friendly" song of the album (see sorrow, L.A. is burning, 21'st century digital boy [STF], etc...) and hopefully only one... i wasn't completely digging it, but yeah... overproduced for sure, guitars sound like they belong on TESF while the rest reminds me of no substance... hmm... let's hope there's more songs to come in the following week so this actually might live up to our ATG expectations
