Los Angeles Is Burning, Let Them Eat War and Sinister Rouge were ripped from radio and posted on this page. Badboy is exactly right, and if I remember correctly, the songs were taken down a few days later.

alex: you think the song was send without permission of brett and epitaph? you must be joking. the guy who send it, is the guy who usually did the newsletter, the webmonkey. anyone remember how brett and epitaph were pissed when this site here posted links to the radio rips of sinister rouge and another track before the release? something like "please take it down, we want to decide when to release a song". now brett even posts the lyrics to concert and radio rips of unreleased songs, and talks about the song. they obviously changed their attitude towards the whole topic. and i think thats a cool thing.

Brett himself posted the correct lyrics for Heroes & Martyrs here not so long ago. Also, I reckon the "2 vocal lineq overlaping" is a Brett trademark. It sounds a lot like Can't Stop It in the song structure as well (kickass fast intro which is guitar-driven, almost one-note vocal melody for the verse, ultra-melodic chorus with mad backup vocs, repeat all this once, and then outro) :)

The studio version of Heroes & Martyrs sounds awesome, even though it's obviously a rough mix - the backing vocals drop out after the first line of the chorus, and Greg is mixed pretty low. I agree it sounds more "punk" that way, but he still could be a bit higher in the mix.
What I'm wondering about is how everybody asumes Heroes & Martyrs is a Brett song? It could very well be, but as opposed to with Honest Goodbye, it's far from obvious with this one. Especially the lyrics could also be Greg, only the guitar intro is more Brett than Greg. Did Jay or Brett ever verify that one?
Also LOL@the shout out at bad-religion.net. If they publically name their source at Epitaph, somebody'd probably gonna lose their job. How nice.
I didn't really like the mix on TPOB, especially the guitar sound, but on the new songs, it sounds better, though it's totally different in H&M from Honest Goodbye. Let's hope the buzz-saw sound from H&M is not just because of it being a rough mix.

I think we've already established that it's Bob Ludwig's version and anyway, it's the same song whatever it's played in, it only sounds different cos of the different players having their own configurations etc.

I think the reason why the itunes version sounds different is because if you download this song it says "Bob Ludwigs Version."

I agree with all the ones that said the guitar's change is great.
Bad Religion was needing changes, otherwise I don't believe (and this is a humble personal opinion) they wouldn't have made it 'till now in the same shape they are at the moment.
And changes imply that some ppl are gonna like them and some other will complain, take more time to digest them to finally accept them or leave them.
I take them. I rather see them playing all together than getting bored, cranky and pissy for doing the same things all the time on the same way. Look at it as a marriage, no marriage survive without little re-touches. Rutine kills everything. Besides they grew up, their life styles had changed, they are more experienced, their personal life is different. How can anyone expect them to be the same as they were in the past?

Stinger66, yeah, I read that as well, but with the general "feel" of the song and the very Brett-ish lyrics, I guess we can assume Greg only participated in a small way to the songwriting process... probably vocal melody there and there, finding with the best the way to do the "question/answer" part etc... who knows for sure ? :)

To share the realization from the forums, the issue is only in iTunes with "sound enhancement" turned on. I don't no what (if anything) that feature actually does, but if you turn it off the track plays correctly.
and yes, it kicks ass :)

The problem with this song and iTunes is really strange.. Its the first time something like this happens to me. Maybe the mixing has to do something with it, i dont know.. What I know is that I'm using Quicktime and I'm falling in love with this song!

Greg's kind of "rapping" on this song reminds me alot of the older scorchers where he sang so fast you couldn't understand what he said or you mistook it for another word. (Examples: Progress, Quality or Quantity, Unacceptable, Slaves - Hell, even Marked is a pretty fast burner.)
BR, I'm standing, applauding, and wanting more.

The guitars are the most awesomenest thing I've heard in a long time, I don't think it needs a solo, except maybe a little one in the outro like on Best For You for example. Just a pity that I can't hear Greg.

Sorry, last time I bother, I swear I found out it was a problem with iTunes apparently.. For some reason, even without equalizations or anything, it sounded like that.. I tried with another program and now it sounds great. I have no idea why it did that.. I take back what I said.. Bob Ludwig did a great job

Personally I think that a punk rock song needs to have the vocals at almost the same level of the rest of the band. It sonds more "live" or something.
I hope the record sounds, musically and mixly(???), more like this than Honest Goodbye... more punkish and less poppy.

I still have a feeling this is not the final version. Compare Honest Goodbye with Heroes And Martyrs.. Greg sounds A LOT louder on Honest Goodbye I had to make a mono copy of the Heroes and Martyrs mp3 to actually hear him properly. Am I the only one who has this problem?

I love heroes and martyrs! But it is a little short, and the background vocals sound kinda weird, but greg sounds very good! He sings with the same energy as on the gray race or the NA/POB. And I don't blame the kid for not recording the other songs. I bet he was just paralyzed from a 5 minute long eargasm from bad religion.

"New dark ages is really fast and speedy, but incredibly melodic. They really went overboard with the oozin ahhs on that song. It sounds like a mixture between Process of belief, New america and No Control/Suffer."
Thanks, sounds great!
The same could be said for Heroes and Martyrs IMO. I guess Brett & Co. "leaked" this one in order to shut up the bitches who couldn't stop whining about Honest Goodbye.
Mission accomplished I guess.

OK, so I sent a message to the guy who heard 52 Seconds and New Dark Ages. These are his opinions:
"Hey, just thought I'd answer your questions. 52 seconds is not really like the "overture" in Empire Strikes first. It's actually really heavy and sounds almost like a metal song. Greg also sings a bit in it and they put a weird effect on his voice that makes it sound all hollow. And of courrse, the song is 52 seconds long.

It's ages since I posted a comment here...Heroes and Martyrs studio version sounds far way better than the live one...hoping the rest of the album keeps these high standards!

Okay so isn't Bad Religion still supposed to be at KROQ today and tomoro too? Maybe They'll play the songs again! If you hear of any members at the station, call and request them to play it again and maybe someone could record it!!!

I'm still confused why everyone keeps saying he mixed it. Mastering engineers generally do not mix anything. And if they are mixing they're only mixing stems.

OK boys and goils, this sounds KILLER! I'M STOKED! I must say I like the overall sound and tone on this version of Heroes And Martyrs better than on Honest Goodbye! I hope this the way the whole album will sound like: warm, but still rough and very upfront. And as always, I'm in love with Brooks Wackerman's drumming.
Btw, Bob Ludwig is TEH god of mastering engineers. Wiki just told me that he isn't working at Sterling Sound in New York nowadays, but started his own record-mastering facility. And there is a difference between producing an album and the mastering. Would you like to know more?

thats probably more so the tone or texture of the guitars themselves and not the song itself (aside from the tempo).

What a great track! It's funny but when i first heard this song it sounded very metal, which i remember thinking when i first heard the opening track of TPOB. After several listens however the 'metal-ness' seems to strangely disappear and subsequently sounds increasingly like older style BR melodic hardcore punk.

I love the mix. Greg's voice is usually way too loud. Now it's mixed in with the music and acts as a layer along with everything else as opposed to sitting on top of the mix.
nice work.

I would have expected Barresi to mix it as well (he mixed TESF) and either way Brett and the rest of the band would probably be very involved. It is peculiar and altogether inexplicable.

I ain't no expert of this stuff.. but i thought that it was gonna be Joe Barresi to mix the album.. right? So that could mean that this version is just an attempt by Bob Ludwig.. I might be using too much fantasy anyway.. and after a few listens it started to sound better.. The only thing that bothers a little is about the choruses that sound louder than Greg's voice.. the rest is perfect

If it is simply a mix version and not the final album version, that's pretty awesome they are releasing it to us. Personally, I might not listen to this in case it is the album version, but if it isn't the album version, it would be interesting to notice differences when the album comes out. Hmm...
Btw, it's all good matt, I coulda been more nimble about checking mail on a daily basis :\.

Yeah, but remember it also says, along with "02," (Bob Ludwig's version) after the track. If it was ripped from the official album I personally doubt it would say that. The term "version" alone begs the question.

Like it or not, this is the final version. The album is finished, mastered, mixed and probably ripped on someones computer somewhere. This MP3 is called 02 Heroes and Martyrs, I bet there's an 03 Germs of Perfection.mp3 out there too along with the rest.
Just leak them all now!

I concur, but Ludwig's got the rep...I'm sure things will turn out ok. This can't be the final master. If so...something has gone terribly wrong. It's clipped all over the place for god's sake!

I have to agree with Nails Basstard. Is this the definitive version or what? Cause the choruses cover Greg's voice.. Not a great job by this Bob Ludwig, in my opinion.. Great song, nonetheless.. Can't wait to hear the rest!

If this guy is so great than why the louder I play the song the less I can hear Greg?

Must be part of another beginning of album blazing triple attack like on the previous two.
But there does seem a curious lack of lead guitar in both the new tracks... Sure there's the bendy shit at the start and finish of Honest Goodbye, but no solo break in either song... And rippin' solos are just one of many reasons I love BR.

This song really feels much to short. I mean it is a great great song (mix notwithstanding), but a sweet bridge and one more chorus would really elevate it i think.
