In two separate interviews, Guitar Edge sat down with Brett Gurewitz and Joe Baressi to discuss The Dissent Of Man, the instruments used, the recording process and a lot more.

Brett: "Well, first of all, I'd have to say that I'm more of a songwriting guitarist than a pure guitarist. Anyone who knows my music knows that I'm no virtuoso. We do have virtuosos in the band with Brian Baker [guitar] and Brooks Wackerman [drums]. I have my own style, and I do take some leads and solos. I know that I'm not as highly accomplished as the rhythm guitar player in Bad Religion, but I think that my songwriting style comes through a lot on the records, as well as in my production style."
Brett: "On past records the Red Rocker got a lot of play. On the new record I kept trying it out and I didn't really like it. The new album uses a lot of different guitars. I use a lot of a goldtop Les Paul with a P-90. There's actually a lot of Telecaster. I have a 1950 Telecaster—a real one, not a remake. And that one made the record a lot. There's also a company called Nash that makes excellent guitars. I used a Nash Telecaster on the new record quite a bit."
Brett (on The Dissent Of Man): "I'm really pleased with it. The new album is quite a departure from our previous records for those who are familiar with our music. The last three records were pretty safe records—conservative punk rock records, if you will. I would say that the new record is slightly more along the lines of the more experimental stuff we did in the mid-'90s. But when I say "experimental," I don't mean we sound like Tool or anything. I feel like we delved a little more into alternative rock territory with our writing on this album."
Joe: "It's taken three records worth of experimenting, but we finally have it down now. Brett Gurewitz and Greg Graffin both bring in fairly elaborate demos done in Pro Tools, and a few days before recording, during pre-production, we may make some arrangement changes and make sure the tempos feel good. That's the ease of digital editing: Making edits to arrangements is super fast, and if we keep the same tempo and key intact, then it allows us to keep anything from the demos, if needed, to use in the final recording or to play to while tracking live."
Joe: "I think challenging yourself is key on most records. I'm a big fan of trying out new gear, and Brett shares my enthusiasm for doing A-B tests between everything from mic pres to cables and mics. The main rhythm guitars, as per every record I've done with the band, were done by Brian Baker, but on this album there were a few songs that needed a different feel, and those rhythms were played by Brett and Greg Hetson. Whatever worked for the song, really."

When was Greg and Brett's rough patch "a while back"? Is he talking about the mid 90s?

I don't think Empire was that conservative. I mean, Process was conservative in the sense that it went back to hardcore roots, but coming in straight after that, Empire seemed more focussed on crafting great songs with a solid spattering of commercialism thrown into the mix, while still staying true to hardcore aspects. Dissent feels less conservative because it almost whole-heartedly lets go of their hardcore past. Plus, Empire had a greater focus on studio production techniques that no other album has had as well.

Isn't this the same guy who said "The Gray Race" was a bad album??? I for one am not a Brett hater but his last interview didn't make him look that great . Bingo |
