Danny Goldberg (who used to manage Kurt Cobain) was the important factor in BR moving to Atlantic Records. In 1993 and 1994, he was president of Atlantic.
Jay: "We'd been approached by a lot of other labels, but we didn't really appreciate their attitude. It just seemed like they put on a different face to come and talk to us. It wasn't real. It was big business. And we didn't want to get caught up in that. Every meeting that we had, we'd laugh, we'd eat and we' d say good-bye. But when we met with Danny, the first thing he said was, 'I don't want to embarrass you guys.' Which was amazing, coming from somebody who doesn't have to care."[1]
Graffin: "Because of Danny Goldberg's enthusiasm, we all thought that we should give Atlantic a shot."[2]
Goldberg: "I think they could go very far. Certainly they could go as far as a band like Midnight Oil, which has had platinum (million-selling) albums. They have a quality so high that they easily transcend the genre in which they started. They seem to me a very sophisticated rock band that happens to have a lot of integrity and commitment, but musically they're so good that I don't see any limit to what they can accomplish."[3]
