Eddie Vedder is the lead singer of Seattle, WA based grunge band, Pearl Jam.
Vedder used to check out Bad Religion in San Diego, where he lived, long before Pearl Jam started. He used to sneak backstage at all of the Bad Religion shows to try to meet the band, and that's how they met him. After Pearl Jam formed, Bad Religion opened for them in Germany during the Ten European tour, in the early nineties.
Jay: "We hung out and were all getting goofy. You know how when you sit down with someone, and your jokes are all the same, you have the same sense of humor, you do things that are similar? You just kind of connect. At the second show we played with them, he and I decided to go onstage, and see who could punk out the most. But I told him, "You can't climb up anything because I can't when I'm playing bass, so you have to do it at ground level.' He goes out there and does his thing, and I think, 'Whooo, it's going to be hard to top that one.' Then I go out, and during the first song I'm swinging my bass around and my strap breaks. My guitar had such momentum that it went flying to the other side of the stage, landed on the ground and went 'Whhhhooooo.' I just stared at it for a moment, stared at the audience, then looked at Ed. He just shouted, 'You Win!'".
Greg says he would like to record a whole album with Eddie someday: "I would like to put together something out of the ordinary, but still really good".
On an early promo photo of Pearl Jam, around 1990-1, Eddie was wearing a Bad Religion T-shirt.
Eddie sings backup on "American Jesus" and the second verse of "Watch It Die." In "Watch it Die," he sings the second verse, from "I saw a man" to "put to sleep." In "American Jesus", only backing vocals. Greg said they came up with the idea to involve Eddie because as they were doing the background vocals overdubbing for Recipe for Hate (album) in Los Angeles, it just so happened that Eddie was in town. They invited him to the studio. He cruised over in his Mazda truck, it was all very spontaneous, nothing planned. [1]
Greg and Eddie sang "Watch it Die" together on stage on October 31, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA.. [2]
