Brett's caption underneath a photo that he posted on flickr in May 2009 from Bad Religion's overdub sessions for The Empire Strikes First: "It's 4 am in the morning already and I've been dealing with The Surface of Me all night, there's something missing there but I still can't put my finger on it. Is it just that it sounds as if it had been written for The New America? Dammit Greg, I thought you were over with that!"

The Surface Of Me ended up as a bonus track on the Japanese version of the album, but also on the Los Angeles Is Burning single.
