England
Seemed like such a beautiful place from afar,
Until one day
I saw how miserable things really are.
All fantastic images,
They only are apparent,
Propagated just by hope
And desire to share it.
Beauty
Was the allure that brought me close to you.
Loneliness
Was the bond that made me stick like glue.
All fantastic images,
They only are apparent,
Promoted by desperate hope
That things are somewhere better.
I don't have a thing against fantasy,
But to chase it down just doesn't make sense to me.
If your only hope is simply peace and love,
You end up discarding most of what you're made of.
All fantastic Images,
They only are apparent,
Promoted by desperate hope
That things are somewhere better.

Yeah I'm from England, (although I wouldn't say I'm English over here as it might annoy the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish, so I'd say I'm British instead... see my interpretation of 'Hear It' for how dumb this P.C. rubbish is)!
Yeah I've noticed over the years that our American brothers have this strange idea that Great Britain is so quaint and nice. I'm gonna burst your bubble and say it's shit. Which is what the main theme of this song is about, the way I see it. It's a 'burst-your-bubble' song.

I remember reading statements by both Greg and Brian, saying that this is a song "against" England. I don't really know whether this is just one of the aspects of the song (eg that England is just a showcase of the problems of modern society but they are present everywhere ) or it really is yet another elitist lampoon against a specific country. My guess would be it's just one of the aspects.

All of the people who believe in trying to attain peace on earth are doing the right thing, although I think Greg is trying to say that to genuinely believe one day everything will be perfect is utter folly. It also brings to mind the classic saying 'grass is always greener on the other side' - especially the first verse. No matter how alluring a place or person seems, they are never as happy or fulfilling as you first thought. Everything can be marketed or exaggerated.

A song that does a little justice to the concept of reality and moderates (for the greater good of course) the belief that ANYTHING is necessarily correct or beneficial for the sole reason of being seen or believed. Greg seems to be saying "Regardless of your take on life or what makes you happy to believe, you must always concede that the reality may just not be what you expect it to be." Keeping one's head about oneself seems to be the cut-and-thrust of the song.
A caution to the sanguine, those a little too carried away with lofty ideals, perhaps. 08/30/2004 at 11:26

This song reminds me of my high school crush, who was completely out of my league. The second verse "Beauty was the allure that brought me close to you - loneliness was the bond that made me stick like glue" describes very accurately my feelings when I knew my crush. This song is very direct and explains that eye candy can be EXTREMELY sour. Even peace and love, as Graffin mentions in the last verse, is just eye candy that can be marketed, but never achieved.
