Welcome my son to where the work is never done
And the hungry are seldom ever fed
The department of false hope is a proving ground for dopes
And they'll grind your tiny bones to make their bread (Hosanna)
So hold your head up high forgotten man
Tomorrow won't be made for you
And everybody's gotta try to lend a helping hand
For god and man there's nothing more to do
It crackled on the radio through bright plumes of the sun
The announcer said the age of faith was dead
Though the adolescent nation was just looking for salvation
The beast of reason reared it's ugly head (Hosanna)
So hold your head up high forgotten man
Tomorrow's not for me and you
And everybody's gotta try to lend a helping hand
For god and man there's nothing more to do
From your cradle of destruction
With the poorest of instruction
And the merest sliver of a tune
You managed somehow to muddle through
So hold your head up high forgotten man
Tomorrow's not for me and you
And everybody's gotta try to lend a helping hand
For god and man there's nothing more to do
There is nothing more

About grindig bones and making bread:

I think "forgotten man" is an allusion back to the campaign of FDR and his first New Deal. It would make alota sense for the rest of the song too. It could be talking about the Great Depression as well.
The name would also make sense, since FDR's New Deal created many a new administrations and "departments". 03/03/2013 at 18:38

I think it's how reason outreasons faith/religion. Instead of relying and praying we need to help and be helped by our fellow man/family/friends

Well it could be about the government not dealing with the poverty (perhaps even critiquing Obama with false "Hope" and not doing much different than Bush) and how the mismanaged economy will affect the "forgotten" but not the "dopes" in charge (tomorrow's not for me or you).

The lyrics mention an "Adolescent nation". I've often read that a lot of psychologists and psychiatrists portay the USA as being in the "teenage" part of their development.
As in, they rebel, they try a lot of things, make a lot of new experiences and realize some of them are good and others just totally wrong. Today, they're certainly in a wrong one. So to me this song is about how USA (and about pretty much big industrialized countries) have taken a wrong turn and that we should not see any amelioration soon. But despite that, we can still "hold our head up high", show pride and confidence in ourselves in this time of despair... 01/08/2013 at 16:22
