Halcyon days are not a thing
Nostalgia is an excuse for stupidity
I don't believe in golden ages
Or presidents that put kids in cages
America awaits on bended knee
Can't you see?
Sweet children, Locke's burden
Why did mother draw the curtains?
Free will is your dilemma
(What will the dust remember?)
Tell me, where do you really want to be
At the end of history?
Utopia is an opiated dream
What we want is an open society
One torn and frayed at the edges
With pages of imperfect changes
And every hallmark of rationality
Can't you see?
Sweet children, Locke's burden
Why did mother draw the curtains?
Free will is your dilemma
(What will the dust remember?)
Tell me, where do you really want to be
At the end of history?
At the end of history, nobody will be innocent
Of naked crimes against eternity
We're in the last second of our December
Tell me, how do you want to be remembered?
For generosity, or a fucking monstrosity?
Tell me, where do you really want to be?
(Sweet children, Locke's burden, why did mother draw the curtains?)
Tell me, where do you really want to be?
(Free will is your dilemma, what will the dust remember?)
Tell me, where do you really want to be?
(Sweet children, Locke's burden, why did mother draw the curtains?)
Tell me, where do you really want to be
(Free will is your dilemma, what will the dust remember?)
At the end of history?

This song references Karl Popper, John Locke and Francis Fukuyama. It makes not too subtle anticommunist references a d celebrates the theorists of liberal capitalism. Brett is showing us that in old age, he has stayed so punk that he remains to the left of Donald Trump, if not Francis Fukuyama, the theorist of the End of History. Way to go, Brett! Stay punk, kids. And maybe try to stay relevant, too! How did we get Donald Trump? Anticommunist references these days only come from Trump supporters or the kind of irrelevant right wing liberals like Jordan Peterson who dont know they are part of the problem. No one is defending Stalin, old man, we just want to survive capitalism and climate change. Thanks.

We must choose the difference we will make in this imperfect, broken world and do so from a space of love and acceptance of what is, not wait for the revolution (or heaven or whatever dogma one may believe) that will make everything over and perfect. We must embrace this work with love and act now as we choose what our life is for.
