Heard a sermon from a creaky pulpit with no one in the nave.
I paid a visit to the synagogue and I left there feeling blame.
No one can tell me what to do;
They had not the capacity to answer me.
What the world needs now is some answers to our problems.
We can't buy more time because our tender isn't valid.
If your soul needs love, you can get consoled by pity,
But it looks as though faith alone won't sustain us no more.
Watched the scientists throw up their hands conceding, "Progress will resolve it all."
Saw the manufacturers of Earth's debris ignore another Green Peace call.
No one could tell me what to do;
No one had the ability to answer me.
What the world needs now is some accountability.
We can't buy more time 'cause time won't accept our money.
If your soul needs love, you can always have my pity,
But it looks as though faith alone won't sustain us no more.

Another thing about this song is it's saying that our obsession with greed/money will not allow us to 'buy' our way out of our own folly in the future. I suppose accruement of material goods and wealth is another kind of faith that will ultimately be blind and short-sighted. Just thought I'd bring that up as it hasn't been mentioned yet.
Also the part about the 'Green Peace call' reminds me of 'Modern Day Catastrophists'. Saying about how a few people are trying to save the world but are viewed as irritating 'tree-huggers' etc. Another stupid prejudice against people who actually care about nature and the future propagated by the greedy capitalists/industrialists and their faith in money. If we carry on this way it will all come to bite us in the ass later. And as much fun as it would be to point the finger at the religious, scientific and money-obsessed faiths in the trashed future and say, "I told you so", it would be an empty pleasure.

I was most struck by the inclusion of scientists in the list of people blinded by faith. I've felt more and more that science is becoming a religion in its own right. This isn't a song purely about theological faith. As a human race, we place faith in everything, our cars our jobs our money our god (or our lack thereof). But what good is faith in a world that is going to shit because of it?

I find this a little ironic because I feel real emotion in this song even while it blasts faith and sentimentality and embraces logic. The opening is kind of sad, showing the irrelevance of traditional religions to the problems we face - "no one in the nave". Then the song does a little twist on the famous, sentimental tune: "What the world needs now - Is love, sweet love." Yeah that is nice and gentle and all that but NO - what we really need are answers to our problems, we need to get rid of nukes, landmines, etc. Forget your sentimentality, your need for love, for faith, and let us get on with fixing this mess of a world! Or at least die trying.

I have found that this song means that we can't just be passive people; we need to change the world problems by taking action and fight for what we believe in. Faith is just having hope that things will workout and taking no action to change or rearrange the situation. It is true if we just had faith and that's all nothing for change, because we would be living in a world of 100% pacifism.

During the 1500's, Protestant reformers Martin Luther and Jean Calvin declared that Faith Alone is all that mankind needs to live a happy life. At that time however, the world was not an environmental disaster. This song is about the fact that, with all the problems the world is now facing, we cannot rely merely on faith alone to save mankind. Problems such as pollution and overpopulation require all mankind to work together in order to resolve the issue as opposed to blindly relying on faith to make things all better.
