I like to think that this is a somewhat autobiographical song, describing personal experiences of living the life of a teen that was part of the LA night/punk scene. It speaks about living a double life, and the temptations and danger that come along with that. However, the subject finds that the nightlife is as painful as his normal life during the day.
The first lines seem to have a double meaning. The subject compares the heat from the sun to the pain of every day life. In the end, with either meaning, one escapes into the night for relief, but there is none to be found as the "night is the same" To live your life with jaded eyes is to live with skepticism and doubt. "You live your life in darkness youve got pennies on your eyes": The pennies on your eyes is a term relating to death. It was said that when a Greek citizen died, pennies (coins) were placed on the deceased to pay Charon's fare to cross the river Styx to the afterlife. The subject feels dead on the inside living this sort of lifesstyle. There is denial involved here "you say that it's alright because you've never lived a lie" The Bible uses light as a metaphor for truth to juxtapose those living in the shadows "sin". The subject decides to feed further and go deeper into the world of the night as a means of survival "womblike existence into the night" "Cant see no light/hear those heavy footsteps" The subject is falling into addiction (little man inside may refer to the addict inside of him) and the heavy footsteps is usually associated with paranormal activity (ghosts in the house etc) so he is being haunted by his addiction and the addiction is keeping him in bondage (mind filled with shadows/palms filled with sweat/limbs bound in a fatal net). At this point you either submit to the darkness or turn and fight the issue head on. The song ends with not seeing the light anymore, the continuance of being haunted... the breathiing at your side may refer to a shallow breathing. Is it just you breathing shallow from drug use or is it the end? Just my interpretation... great song. 10/29/2010 at 04:05

I think it's about primal fear. The kind you feel when you are close to death, either from a predator or from some sickness. This song could be about being stalked by ones own drug addictions, or it could be about society being choked to death by its own effluvium.

Your day sucks ass all day so you try to escape it all at night, maybe you go out to the bar, or chase girls, or drink a buncha NyQuil until you can sit through an episode of Friends, or just dick around on the computer all night gettin pwned by 14 year old geeks over and over, I don't know, you do whatever'n the hell it is you do at night to forget about daytime... but then it sucks just as bad as daytime. You should probably confront whatever makes your days and night suck so bad but instead you'll just hit the ol' NyQuil again tomorrow night.

I believe this song represents how our society is miserable and looking for solutions to its problems and not finding any because we are still in the dark. 'Your head is filled with darkness You've got pennies on your eyes' Our culture is full of hate and greed, which results from our money driven society. 'You hear those heavy footsteps' We know we are headed for disaster but we don't change our actions and we 'run headlong into the night' because we try to reason away our misery.
