The systems of life hum accordingly
Every day, every year, every century.
But everywhere humans go things get worse and worse;
Can't you tell through the smoke in the dirty city?
The jungle was once a tranquil hideaway
For the kind of trees and the mountains themselves.
But man those things sell a million dollars a pound,
Cut them up, dry them out, good display for the shelves.
Why can't we just leave them alone?
Who is the animal?
Who is that dangerous beast?
Why were the other ones made?
I know it wasn't just for our feast.
And now they're down to 250 lone souls,
They're a breed of a losing generation, it seems.
The killers are ourselves so you know who to blame,
It was man with his plan and his frightening greed.
I don't think we'll ever leave them alone.

An environmental anthem with bits attacking religion. "I know it wasn't just for our feast." would be in response to some of the more ridiculous of Christian beliefs, that being the belief that all non-human things exist merely for our use. It exposes not only the ignorance, but the arrogance of Christianity (along with many other religions.) Other than that I think the song is very self-explanatory- Greg is calling mankind out on environmental degradation and the needless elimination of wildlife.

This song is about Mankind's interference in the environment, which would otherwise have been stable. Everywhere we go as a species we are destroying/have destroyed the rest of nature. The rainforest is being destroyed and sold.
Man is the animal, man is the dangerous beasts, the other animals are not just for us to eat, or kill for ivory, but living things no less than humans. Species that once numbered hundreds of thousands of animals are now down to mere hundreds and it is our fault. If we do not control our greed, their will be nothing left. It does not look like we ever will control our greed. We are not above nature, but are part of it and we are destroying it. 06/15/2005 at 23:50
