Do you know the cost of future misery?
Have you lost your sense of sustainability?
We are just a step away
From realizing what we strive to be,
But we've got to break out
From this insulated, blind and lame senility.
Wake up the new America, wo-oh!
Transcend the mass hysteria, wo-oh!
Change is the thing you're wary of, wo-oh!
We need a new America, wo-oh!
Laurels, human triumph,
Bestowments from the past,
Victories don't mean a thing
If they don't last.
We are just marching toward extinction
With blinders on our eyes,
Jeopardizing everything
We've learned and come to realize.
You call that wise?
Open your eyes, America, wo-oh!
See through the lies they tell to us, wo-oh!
Confront the fears that worry us, wo-oh!
We need a new America, wo-oh!
We don't have to be afraid to reinvent.
We've got to start to build
Progress and implement,
For when we take our fill
And never pay the price,
We only build ourselves
A fleeting, false paradise.
You can live in staunch denial
And mark me as your enemy,
But I'm just a voice among the throng
Who wants a brighter destiny.
Then say with me,
We are the new America! wo-oh!
This is the new America! Wo-oh!

I believe this song is about how far research ect has taken us...we know so much about the world around us and yet as society we do very little to put that knowlede to use...we KNOW about global warming...we are not using humanitys knowledge to its fullest capabilitys to stop it. therefore we are walking towards extinction w blinders on...we know what will happen to this planet if we don't act but we live in denial and don't do enough about it...its saying we need a new america that will wake up and use what we know.

I haven't actually read through the lyrics of this song yet, neither did I pay much attention listening to them. The only thing that's got stuck in my mind is Greg's desperate cry of: Wake up the new America, wo-oh!!
A country who calls itself the biggest democracy on Earth, who's government consists of only 2 rivaling parties (what a choice!!), who portray the same chace the same goals anyway, just give them other names; a government, that put their own interests before its people's, who is intentionally holding back information that might get the public to start thinking, who is controlled by media that cuts news into small easily digested bits and pieces and who stirrs up constant mass hysteria until its population thinks its under constant threads from rouges, evel doers and buccaniers, conjuring up flamboyant images of a happy life that everyone can obtain if they only dream it and step on enough people to reach the top; a nation who tries to project a clean, clear image of itself to every corner of the world, but cannot hide the pile of shit they are standing on anymore ...... such a nation desperatly needs a wake up call.... so WAKE UP NEW AMERICA 03/12/2006 at 12:01

I think the "new america" GG is referring to is actually nhe next generation of Americans and how they should wake up and try to establish peace and harmony and "see through the lies they tell to us and not be afraid to reinvent things to get their goals met.
Also how the establishment will mark the next generation as its enemy. 06/18/2005 at 14:59

I think this song is basically about how we, as Americans, have achieved this false goal of success, peace, and tolerance, when in fact, we've just covered it up. I believe the point of the song is that when America was founded, it created a sense of a community with a goal, that there was something that could be reached if we worked together. Unfortunately, we feel we have accomplished these goals, when in fact we haven't. So, to quote 'we need a new America' to revitalize mankind into working toward the common good. I also really like the lines 'You can live in staunch denial And mark me as your enemy But I'm just a voice among the throng Who want a brighter destiny'. This is a great expression of the punk movement and how those who fight for what is right in the nation and also fight against what is wrong in this nation are the true patriots, not just those who fight for what is right.

I can imagine what the lyrics in this song's all about; what a corrupted country America really is and how the big corporations are misleading the people. But what is the 'new America'? It would be interesting to see what you guys think about this cause I myself am a bit stuck here.
