A mutinous enemy
Carved a nascent country.
Sweat, blood and valor
Forms the grit of our history.
Bequeathed to everyone:
Chance and free expression,
Substance was restrained
And the spirit was broken.
I feel a strange denial,
Rhythmic as a change,
Constant as time.
Lonely insistent whispers,
Somber as a wave bye bye.
Searching for solution
Without constitution,
Black coats by our sides
Promising salvation.
Advocating dogma
As tickets to hereafter,
Mortals in their prime
With their desperate hands in the air.
Daunting, complex and burning,
Rhythmic as change,
Constant as time.
Conflicts craving approval
Weighted as a murder trial.
Oh, I feel a strange denial.
Correct is consensus,
Everything else nonsense.
Forward is the hope,
Forget recompense.
Peace and tranquility
Is only for the wealthy,
Dearth for the masses
And inequality.
I feel a strange denial,
Rhythmic as change,
Constant as time.
Lonely insistent whispers,
Dissipating in the night
Like a lone forgotten light.
And no one is helping me,
It's a strange denial.

Reading Vampailleur, I think that the line
"A mutinous enemy carved a nascent country" - The founding "fathers", rebels that gave birth to the US. They were all citizens of the crown, Mutinous. "Bequeathed to everyone: Chance and free expression Substance was restrained And the spirit was broken" Speaks to the original sin of the US, and that would also broadly encompass the civil war, just like with many things in the world, the US Civil War had forces behind it that represented both good and bad intentions. I think that "Black coats" for me conjures images of church clergy. "Black coats by our sides Promising salvation" "Forward is the hope Forget recompense Peace and tranquility is only for the wealthy Dearth for the masses And inequality" There's alot in there, I think they cover some of the potential and actual evils of capitalism and even democracy. "Correct is Consensus Everything else, nonsense" I mean just because a majority of the vocal demand something, does not make it right. Ultimately to me it's a reminder of where we were, where we are, and perhaps the road ahead. But It's not a happy song. It fills me with sadness. But such that I want to move forward and help to foster meaningful change, not in a radical way, but in a measured and hopefully convincing way. 10/24/2022 at 23:43

I also think there is a reference to the US civil war.
"A mutinous enemy carved a nascent country" "Black coats by our sides Promising salvation" Perhaps a reference that the Union promised to free the slaves. Just saying. But I think that this song was meant to be ambiguous. 02/18/2012 at 19:48

This is another example of BR's genius ability to write and express ideas in ways no one else can. Through the song, he is describing society and the world, (exaggerating a little) then he cuts in with his thoughts on this world "I feel a strange denial" or "somethings not right, what could it be? But it is obvious as he goes on describing society and cutting in often with those lines. He describes problems in society because people are like arrows, they are very narrow. "Blackcoats by our sides Promising salvation,
Advocating dogma as tickets to hereafter, Mortals in their prime With their desperate hands in the air.....Correct is Consensus Everything else, nonsense" This is why he thinks something is wrong, and he is right. It ends with a cry for help because he is the only one who feels this way.(metaphor for a small population of people) And his insitant whispers (he doesn't want to get caught) are unheard. Have You seen the movie "The Island?" I don't know this song reminds me of it, you will understand if you watch it. "Lonely Insistent whispers, Dissipating in the night, Like a lone forgotten light, And no one is helping me, It's a strange denial." Well Done. 01/16/2007 at 21:37

Do you feel a strange denial about society, and what people just don't want to acknowledge?
This is one of BR's best examples of a song that demonstrates just how naive people can be, and how people prejudge situations ('Weighted as a murder trial'). I feel this song speaks volumes about a society ('Correct is consensus, everything else nonsense') that is more inclined to believe things that people have always assumed to be correct (read: religious teachings) and forget what anyone else says. A great song and one I listen to often. 07/17/2004 at 02:43
