Shut off the TV and peel off those sunday gloves,
And I'll stain the clean that you've been counting.
Old Mr. Fletcher passed by here today,
After 40 years of toil he just stood up and walked away.
Fantastic the panic that showed in his eyes,
He shrugged when I asked him about it.
He said, "young man, pay heed, listen well to what I say,
Now there comes a time for a man to walk away."
Walk away (walk away), I'll be a parade,
And I'll be determined that no one shall dissuade
On my way, I'll sure take some time
To burn all the bridges that I'm leaving behind.
He passed by again and he was shivering from the cold,
I'm not sure but I think that he was trying.
He told me about the weather and something old to pay,
"But tomorrow", he said, "I'm gonna surely walk away."
Walk away (walk away), I'll be a parade,
And I'll be determined that no one shall dissuade
On my way, I'll take my sweet time
To burn all the bridges that I'm leaving behind.

One might imagine, upon hearing this song, a character who feels tied to society for some reason. Maybe Mr. Fletcher always intuitively felt like things in his society are not quite right, but isn't sure how to take command, so he decides, or rather fantasizes*, on leaving (fantastic* the panic that showed in his eyes). There seems to be a possibility of mild schizophrenia. There could be a number of reasons that keep him from walking away. Maybe he can't disappoint his parents. Perhaps he married when he was young and has emotionally outgrown his wife, who remains tied to society. We don't know. As for 'shut off the TV', we have since learned well Brett's thoughts about TV.
Peeling 'off those Sunday gloves' may refer to church. Gloves protect and cover from the reality of the outside cold. The chorus shows how Fletcher really feels: 'He is going to take some time to burn his bridges.' This shows how much pent-up frustration he has. It also says that he has figured out, that one way he can remain away is to do something that will make his exile permanent. He doesn't trust himself. The man seems very determined, but like many who form romantic ideas as a way to escape pain, Fletcher seems to have trouble actually carrying out his plan. In the end we find that he doesn't leave.
When people have brief conversations about the weather, they are usually doing little more than filling an empty space in what should be conversation. This is a very stark contrast to what Fletcher had been like previously (which also makes one suspect a bipolar disorder). Also, if there is something old to pay, it indicates that he is not burning bridges, but rather mending them.

This song could be interpreted in many ways depending on how much you know about BR or not.
As far as I can see this song says something like: We keep ranting about how things need to change we get rid of those Sunday gloves and attack the problems . Then we end up finding the couch more comfortable and nothing gets done, but tomorrow we swear will be the time.
Basically: We get annoyed and rant about needed change - but then facing a minimum of resistance/ or simply being lazy, we do nothing. Then we feel bad and say "tomorrow"

This is about those people who always swear up and down that they hate society and they are simply going to leave it, but somehow they never seem to do it. Here Old Mr. Fletcher sets out and he's determined that no one shall dissuade, but then suddenly he remembers he has to go back and pay those bills, and Gosh it's cold outside, so maybe he should walk away tomorrow, when it's nicer outside.
