i just got home from the greg solo show in dortmund. it was totally awesome. the club was a little cellar, with a small corner "curtained" off. it was a 200 capacity, and obviously sold out. greg?s place was really just a 2x2 m corner, with 2 seats (one for guitar, one for E-piano). the sound was amazing, especially the guitar (acoustic) stuff sounded amazingly warm and full. his voice was sometimes hoarse, he explained it was due to giving a lot of interviews and singing at groezrock.
he made a couple of jokes about never having gone solo before, except twice in USA years ago, and that he "didnt have a solo carreer [yet]". it was a bit strange actually, he completely "denied" american lesion. never said a single word about the existance of that project/record. when he introduced cease, he said instead that one might know this version from the dvd. (great joke there too hahaha... the memories!)
stage entry was at 21.12, and the encore was finished at 22.12. see, an exact hour of great music and an awesome night in a nice little club.
setlist as follows:
1. Don?t be afraid to run (awesome song!)
2. Omie Wise
3. God?s Song (totally amazing version of the classic!)
4. Highway
5. Cold as the Clay (here he said that on the record, a woman called Lee Ann (i guess...) sang the chorus with him)
6. Talk about Suffering (an old church hymn)
7. Suffer (YES!)
8. Willie Moore
- change from acoustic guitar and around-the-neck harmonica to E-piano -
9. Rebel?s Goodbye
10. Cease
11. The Watchmaker?s Dial (great song)
- change back to guitar -
12. Sorrow (great version)
13. One more Hill (also great, with a cool introduction about the lyrics)
- encore: -
14. Dream of Unity
well that was it then. it was kinda funny, when he had finished the set, he had to walk through the audience to the outside, and was stopped halfway by some guys and sent back to the stage for an encore!
all in all, a night to remember. greg went out after the gig, changed his flannel shirt into a jacket, and stood with fans for about 20 minutes, signing autographs. i told him that i liked the guitar songs better than the piano ones, to which he replied "always nice to hear feedback!" with a twinkling eye. he also said that he was very satisfied with the night and liked it a lot. so there.

dude, i can take some heat if it makes sense. but if i call THREE out of 14 songs great or awesome, then this is clearly my own opinion and its not AT ALL like the ep. newsletter (great joke there though man!).
so, if you want to critisize something, make better sense next time. |

well, thanks, but no thanks, you shouldnt bother if you cant take some heat for parts of your review. its one thing to say you like certain songs, but its another to make it sound like the epitaph newsletter (and thats a bad thing, unless you think the "awesome, great, amazingly" trailer for the br dvd was worth the wait).

whats with all the "awesome" and "great" after almost all of his songs. i was there, and it was a nice show, but nothing groundbreaking. as he said, the same stuff he plays in his living room. the venue itself was shitty, dont know why he chose this one, too hot, too small, and the spot in the room where he played couldnt have been worse (the lowest point of the room, whith the tallest people standing in front). not to mention the annoying crowd at the back talking all the time... the prime club in cologne is much better for such small shows, i remember seeing the black keys there. oh well, still a nice show.
