I actually like The Offspring, Green Day, AND Bad Religion. I mean, yeah, American Idiot is an awful album, but Dookie and Insomniac (3rd and 4th albums, counting Sweet Children) are really awesome. You can't judge a band on one hit song. Try Burnout or Stuart and The Ave, then tell me what you think.

Peter Gabriel so low?
I mean, you don't have to like him to recognize his talents, I'm sure.
wonder what criteria they used..

Actually, Don't Pick It Up isn't on Americana - not as far as I know, anyway - I have both and have never heard Don't Pick It Up on Americana.
And the list is fucked up and a lot of bands were put lower or higher than they should have been for a reason -
"All Memorial weekend we counted down the top artists in 91X history, and the entire list goes as follows. We put it together based on requests, airplay, and other really impressive data"
Which explains why Nirvana is #1 and Bad Religion isn't.

It's called "Don't Pick It Up". It's on Americana and Ixnay on the Hombre. It's definitely not one of their best songs (insert sarcasm here).

Hey! Don't misunderstand me, I'm not even an Offspring fan, I just think that they're okay and that their 2nd and 3rd albums are really good (Ignition and Smash). I don't like the way they've sold out, abandoning their roots (going from dirty grunge/punk to Green Day-ish pop-punk because that's where the money are) and leaving Epitaph for a major label.
Haha, what song is that? I don't think that I've heard it, but that didn't sound to good. NP :)

Good points. I only use a few examples because their is limited room on this page. I'm glad you agree about DK. Much of my vitriol about the Offspring comes from my disdain for the popularity they've gained with what, in my humble opinion, is trite lyrics and marginal music. I guess we'll agree to disagree on this one. I will, however, sign off with another Offspring gem that must have taken hours to write.
"He chowed about a half
Then his face turned blue
Turned out that candy bar was doggy-doo"
Fantastic! Thanks for the good conversation.

E2H4: I actually agree with you that DK are much better than Offspring, they're actually one of my favourite bands, I just don't like when people pick at bands judging by one song. And if you'd have to judge Offspring by one hit song, I'd rather see it being Self Esteem since Pretty Fly sticks out of their spectrum very much(not in the positive meaning of it, though) (listen to the album, there are no other songs in that style). The reason that the Offspring get more radioplay than DK is that The Offpsings music is much more "Radio-friendly" and melodical. I can't imagine Ill In The Head be played on the radio. The Offspring have some good lyrics though. LAPD is a good example. Instead of falling to the punk band standard of just "f*** the police" they bring us some good arguments. Yeah, the lyrics to Bad Habit kinda stink though so do the lyrics to I Kill Children. Btw, Kill The Poor sounds remarkably similar to the Ramones "You're Gonna Kill That Girl", and yes, Green Day do suck.

Sometimes, the only way to get people fired up and writing half-decent commentary is to offend them with childish name-calling. So hooray for me, and f*ck you! Now, I have to run and go watch Rodney Dangerfield's "Back to School"...I hear there is a really great band that plays at the party scene (ha!).

E2H4, Nietzsche would love you. I love Nietzsche. For some reason, I don't like you very much. Mostly because you disagree with me. Other than than that, keep being an arrogant jerk-- that's punk rock! :)

Fair assesment. I agree that the Offspring have better songs, but if you look at the bulk of their work and compare it to DK the Kennedy's win in a walk. Complaining about politics is one thing; Challenging conventions, your own fanbase, and shedding light on topics that usually don't see the light of day is another (e.g. "Chickenshit Conformist", "Kill the Poor", etc...). Complaining about politics is only a small portion of what most of their work encompasses. As for Dexter he makes me sad. I would hope that someone with a PhD could write better lyrics than "Stupid, dumbshit, goddamn, motherfucker." I do appreciate, Clarence, you adding some substance to the conversation rather than resorting to childish name-calling. Here's something we should all be able to agree on. GREEN DAY is #3! Green Day is better than The Clash, Social Distorion, & Bad Religion? Not to mention Ministry, The Pixies, & Elvis Costello! Talk about mediocrity.

Finally the Ramones get some of the respect that they deserve. I doubt that Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys or any other punk band would ever excist if it wasn't for them... BTW, didn't BR do a cover of We're A Happy Family?
By the way, can people stop mentioning that damn Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) when they talk about the Offspring? They have much better songs, and E2H4, they have songs in which they complain about the politics and all that stuff (If that's what you meant with "challenging an individual to analyze their opinions and beliefs about the world around them")... Jello Biafra and Dexter Holland are actually pals...

True, most Sublime fans are probably to stoned to form opinions on their own, much less use the word "pretentious" correctly in a sentence...good job. On a related topic, how about the Dead Kennedy's being ranked one spot BELOW Death Cab For Cutie and 54 spots below The Offspring? I guess songs that actually challenge an individual to analyze their opinions and beliefs about the world around them can't compare to such Offspring classics as "Pretty Fly For a White Guy." Oops! I stated a fact. Perhaps that was pretentious.

You are correct. The name "Oingo Boingo" should not be mentioned in the same sentence as "Sublime". One of these bands was a revolutionary force that challenged musical boundaries by making their own original instruments and using them in their incredible live shows. The other bastardized their "genre" with inane lyrics, such as describing their dog defecating in a van on its way to Garden Grove, and by doing mediocre covers of The Toyes (No, Bob Marley did not write "Smoke Two Joints") and...Bad Religion. One of these bands has a lead singer so talented he could compose any type of music he desired and be outstanding at it as well. The other band's lead singer was a cowardly douchebag who slowly killed himself with a needle and had more mediocre albums come out after he was dead than when he was alive. I also love your incredibly descriptive term "homo-shit". It really makes you sound like you know what you're talking about.

Holy crap! Does #23 really say "Oingo Boingo"?! We shouldn't be bickering over the Ramones or Rage...both respectable bands. The problem is with the obvious infusion of homo-shit in an otherwise good list of groups (morrissey, smiths, english beat...WTF?!).

I'm surprised that Sublime is #18. I would have assumed they'd be #1. They play that rioting song every 15 minutes for the past 10 years or so. And as for Bad Religion, they play "The Defense" and "Sorrow" pretty frequently. Although, I have heard them play "American Jesus" a couple of times. I didn't expect them to make it this high on the list because they've only been playing BR songs in heavy rotation for about 4 years now.

here's my 2 cents... i really cant stand the ramones or sex pistols; i think they both are mediocre at their very best. On the other hand, ratm and br were underrated, and they both deserve spots in the top 5 because they are the greatest bands mankind has ever produced.
