This album for the most part is completely different from American Lesion songs back of 1998, if you can tolerate folk/country sounding songs you will like this album, if not you might want to stay away.

Good points, Darwin At Work. I agree with you that Graffin's voice sounds great coupled with that of a woman's; they really balance out well. And I agree that Greg seemed to really enjoy himself on this album. It sounds and feels like it was something he'd been wanting to do for a long time. Not quite sure yet what my favorite track is, but I think that Greg's vocals on "Omie Wise" are simply amazing. What a perfect voice this man has for American roots/folk music!!
I'm sure alot of BR fans won't dig this album, but that's ok...it's not meant to have anything to do with BR, really. If you liked AL, and if you enjoy folk music (both new and traditional) like myself, then you'll enjoy Cold As the Clay. I can't wait to see him in Boston next month...I imagine it'll be a lively show.
And yes, I WILL be buying the cd itself once it is officially released

Got-damn infectious.
The primary difference between this and AL is the complete lack of sappiness. You can tell Greg had a good time with this... AL was rather self-depriciating for him. I fully expected the title track to be a depressing, I'm-old-and-worthless type tune, but its earnestly cheerful despite the subject matter.
California Cottonfields is probalby my favorite traditional. Its quite simplistic musically, but the way Greg sings it is awesome. The female vocals are a nice touch as opposed to Greg singing both tracks.
My only real qualm with this album is its length. Greg's songs in particular seem rather short... or maybe I just can't get enough? My real worry is that he'll wait another ten years to do this again.

sorry...i did a small edit...i don't think it's comparable to AL. 3 songs are AL-style the rest are more traditional songs (like talk about suffering).

Don't be afraid to run the best track?
You sure you listened to?
To the poster below me, 1 or 2 of the songs are comparable to American Lesion the rest of them are different musical but generally if you like AL you should like this cd.
Lyrical most of the songs tend to be very traditional so the songs Greg wrote fit lyrically and musically with the older covers.

I'm confused: Is it comparable to American Lesion or not? On the one hand you say it's completely different than AL but on the other hand you say that Greg's songs are very similar than AL?!? Just asking...
