Dude, What The Fuck?? That has to be the saddest BR cover I thnk I have ever heard in my life. Tell ya what, I'm going to sit right here on my fucking couch and strum out my own cover (on and acoustic) and mail it you Neil! The sound of nails on a chalkboard would be more soothing. Pathetic. Plain and simple.

global citizen given that the lead singer is about 20/21 it wouldnt be incorrect to say it was his av growing up. maybe the irony is the point to the song? or has the screaming lyrics of bad religion damaged ur hearing that much? besides theres more than one way of interpreting the song and the story of Job

So... I'm guessing you read about, what? A quarter of the comments of this page?
Also, I think the BR fans' opinions on this cover matter more than others', because the original is much better.

and i thought that cover was great, raw and stripped down. i've always thought good covers gave a fresh twist to the original song... not just aping the original. jon isn't attempting to be BR or Graffin, so comparison is unfair. this is just his rendition of it. (interestingly, BR fans generally hate it but those who haven't heard the original love it.) peace out

hahah, its funny that most opinions on here revolve around them being a "christian band", when switchfoot aren't even a christian band. yes, yes, people tend to call them that (because christians want famous believers to fly their flag), but they've gone on record denying it.. they're really just christian guys in a band. they have 6 albums and not one mention of 'jesus'. jon foreman, the lead singer, is one of the more well-read, intelligent rockstars i know of. he's known to listen to/ read stuff that challenges fundamental religious thought. and his lyrics dont hesitate to question christianity either (no wonder he's a BR fan). and there are many christians like him (some of you talk of christians as if they're a different race born without brains. stupid.) so yeah, the unfortunate "christian band" tag is a weak foundation to base your misinformed opinions on. [for the record, i'm not christian, but they can be smarter than some of you guys who diss them because its cool to.]

"Shut up Neil. Ha Ha." (My name is Anthony and I put the "ha ha" so you'd know I was joking old friend. It would have been hard for you to tell on black and white without the que that it was time to laugh...)
Anthony, I've noticed how everytime you reply to me, you have to use 2 different posts because one that allows 1000 words isn't enough for one of your silly diatribes. Heed your own advice about being on the defensive. My words to Vittu were exactly that...words to him. Mind your own business. And if you had any power of deduction or word inference skills, you would realize my words weren't a question or a sign that I was expecting a fight or even reassurance. You're just offended that I showed your narrowmindedness when I commented on your "christians are going to hell" speech." Since then, you just can't let anything go. Don't take offense, just get a life. And go read some Neitsche or some "source of intellect" so you can feel smart. (Insert your incoherrent comment here)

Plus, what's wrong with BR being any one's 'source' of sophistication, so-to-speak, for when you use the word 'source', unless of course I'm mistaken, you intend to mean an 'origin' or something that 'creates' or 'initiates.' With that in mind, I wouldn't be surprised, if not already in some cases, a lot of anticipating philosophers and natural science majors could say Greg Graffin's lyrics were a primary 'source' of influence to their inquiries of the natural world and reality. It was my mistake for misinterpreting you as a BR fan for something other than their instruments. And aside from all the other stupid posts that nobody cares about, of which I've been making, THIS one, at least deals with Bad Religion. So, while we're on the topic of BR and sources of sophistication, maybe you should watch what you say. YEAH DEWD! You're probably smarter than everyone else here. SO WHAT! Start sending e-mails to Greg Graffin, and not this message board... do you superiority some justice.

Please vittu, clarify for good'ol Dan here the meaning of your words, for in today's world, communication tools like the internet make it harder to determine one's 'voice qualites' as can be done with 'vocals'. But seeing as how Dan such a spectacle of intellect, here, and having always been 'so well read' he would understand that- as probably having read up on descriptive linguistics and paralanguage long, long ago. Basically vittu, you need to let him know whether he needs to pride himself for having such a loyal follower or defend himself in the case that, god forbid, he be made fun of!
Christ man... get a fucking grip. If you were as sure a person as you project yourself to be you wouldn't feel so compelled to jump on the defense or pass judgment everytime someone says something you don't agre with.

Hey man. I never once suggested that you weren't 'well read' and nor did I intend for the reading recomendation to be taken offensively. The End of Faith is truly a 'must read' book, so-to-speak, I think, for anyone who is interested in philosophy, especially to those who have an interest in faith, whether or not one questions it. You have no reason to take offense... but that does seem to be that problem with people who aren't as 'learned' as they'd like to be on the matter of a subject, especially if it lacks empiracal evidence, such as that with religion and philosophy... nothing other than sheer belief or speculation to back themselves up.
Maybe I'll be as sophisticated as you one day, my dear... in the meantime I'll just continue to listen to BR.

No, you guys missed my point by blowing it way out of preportion. Never did I once mention anything about BR's crossbuster, nor anything about how the band members feel about religion. Hell, I even simply stated that I don't care wether or not someone follows a religion. But I'll try to clear my opinion up for everyone (because I admit my first post wasn't very clear). When a Christian band introduces the world of Bad Religion to their fans (some who are that stereotypical arrogant person I mentioned) they're going to get come to check them out. This isn't bad, but what is bad is that some of those people wouldn't take into account what they're listening to, and therefor take some things the wrong way and not completely understand what Br's trying to say, making the message into the opposite meaning of what they intended (for example, a number of people I know actually thought the song God's Love was about god loving mankind).

Yeah, sketchy explanation, oh well who cares... I'm not gonna try and turn this into a preaching ground, I was just makin ridiculous comments before anyway, sort of humor and mindlessly inspired. I'm not gonna sit here and try to 'defend' myself. Anyway read Nietzsche, or as that dude downt here suggested Sam Harris' The End of Faith... both Nietzsche and Harris go into depth about problems with being moderate in the light of 'organized religion'... It's sort of hard to be THOROUGH on a message board limited to 1000 words.
Anyway, I was searchin Google yesterday and found some interview with Greg Graffin back in '93... may not be news to some... who knows, may have been news on here years and years ago.
(I had to break up the link due to posting issues)

I was sort of deliberate in my 'use of words' Dan... I meant to pinpoint the fact that Christians don't realize the contradictions they've established for themselves, (in this case) a place in Hell despite their beliefs... this place in hell is assured to them by not realizing that in order to worship something that is supposedly 'infallible' means that everything HAS to be taken seriously (including The Bible, the "infallible" word of God)... and if not taken seriously, and especially if the Bible is not followed'fundamentaly' (because it IS supposedly the infallible word of god), that would simply imply that whoever ISN'T is suggesting the fallibility of one's OWN religion. It's like being a strong advocate for the law and then, in turn, go out to break those same laws you just stood for. It implies 'moderacy'... and if God is perfect, their is NO WAY to follow his 'rules' (religion) moderately... if you do, according to those Christian understandings of God, you go to hell.

God Anthony, I really hope your comment was tongue in cheek. I realize that MOST chrisians are hypocrites, but not all. There are some who aren't dogmatic and try to worship in a pure way without religious doctrines "showing them the way."
Hell is not a biblical teaching. It was created by the catholic church to control its subects. Saying christians are going to hell is about as accurate as saying St. Peter is controling the gates of heaven...oh wait, you said that too...Er, are you a complete idiot? (Or an "american idiot" :) )

That cover made me experience a lot of "sorrow." I almost wish they weren't a Christian band so it wouldn't seem like I was biased for that reason (I am - fuck them and their stupid religion), because I want it to be clear how terrible an interpretation and performance of that song this was. Holy shit. Greg Graffin should find that singer and beat him about the face. *VOMIT*
Also, quick endorsement: y'all need to read THE END OF FAITH: RELIGION, TERRORISM, AND THE FUTURE OF REASON by Sam Harris. It's a great read to help clarify your position on theism vs. atheism.

I rekon that if they ever re-release HCHBAW? again, they should change the cover art to a screenshot from that video.

Duuuuuuuddde all Christians are going to hell anyway, it's kewl guys... they're all moderately religious, and under the supposed 'infallibility' of their god, there is absolutely no room for moderation... you either live religion 'religiously' or might as well give it up.
So it's kewl, Switchfoot just wanted to let the world know that they too accept their doomed fate as "masichrists" hahaha, by not complying with their own beliefs in a fundamental sense... the only sense it could work to ensure even a possibility of makin it past St. Peter.
DUUUDDEEE FUCKING MERRY CHRISTMASS!!!
I'm from Cleveland, and I listen to Dead Boys and the Pagans music religiously, welcome the cold weather when it comes, power smoke cigarettes during the winter months, drink shit loads of coffee, and play tons of air guitar... and well write completely pointless shit on the BRPage News Message board! YEAH! The Hollywood Brats are gonna be sick on you!!

Fucked up the chords? He improved them! Face it, Greg Graffin's acoustic versions om BR songs suck ass. This is really good though. And it sounds much better in Am so he doesn't have to yell like Greg does.

the cover song isn't that bad. i think it's nicer than the greg graffin version. This guy just doesn't do the 3 chorus's at the end. And I think that is better. because without the 2nd and 3rd voices it is not that powerful anyway. And whoever said he fucked up the chords...he may do...but greg does it too

What can piss me off about Christians is they can listen to a song possibly questioning Christianity but they won't do anything about it. How many BR fans have researched and read books on different faiths or atheism or really tried reaching out? I'm sure we all have. Christians might hear a song like this and think "oh, cute" (if they get the message at all) and thats it. Thats what kills me. Please take the time to examine why you think you're even here on Earth.

Oh, yeah, and to those of you who are going to start ripping on me about that which isn't 'politically correct' on my previous post, let me note... my depiction wasn't intended to be politically correct, well, inherently. It was simply a suggestion that the cross-buster IS a symbol of not supporting orgainzed religion, however, well beyond that of mindless 'judgments' about people and the way they live their lives- for as we know, the very problem with organized religion itself is the "constant" notion to pass juudgement... why would BR wanna stand for the same type of thing or retain that same childish approach? I'm sure that the BR guys have their own, more in depth explanations, but unlike some of you guys I'm not going to act like I know the guys personally, nor will point fingers at someone else as if they should be 'great pals' with the BR guys! YEAH!

Dude... you guys. A small island-village off the coast of Indonesia just dropped a bomb on Iraq, they're all dead! report says that Greg Graffin taught the tribal peoples a way to "carve a nuke out a cross-buster" using lube and an exacto knife.
Oh, and by the way... The cross-buster, as Graffin refers to in the BR video "Along The Way," isn't a symbol to make judgement on other's for their religious beliefs. The cross-buster symbolizes something much more sophisticated than childish finger pointing at religion, however is indeed meant to symbolize an oppositional approach to 'organized religion' and I'm sure as the BR guys got older, went to school, read the works of philosophers like Nietzsche and Russel, and developed their own philsophies on life, their personal perception of the 'cross-buster' as a symbol for their band both changed and grew stronger intellect. This may not be 'the way' it happened, but I felt like offering a much better suggestion than some of these idiots

Obviously the cross is the only symbol Bad Religion could bust in their logo, if they busted any other religious symbol than their "own", it would give the impression of bigotry. A thoughtful atheist reacts primarily against the religion which surrounds him. For example, you can not really reject hinduism unless you know something about it.

How old was bad religion when they invented the crossbuster logo? 15? I think at that age kids just think "cool! it'll shock people and piss off cristians" So all that stuff "batman!" said I think bad religion came up with that later because there are a lot of christian fans. But I am wondering what would happen if bad religion used an anti-muhammed logo. Or an anti-homersapien logo.

Hey Neil Davis. You haven't done a "LOL" in a long time, I miss 'em.
Heheheheh.
Anyway, I consider this news. Not good news, but it's still news because it relates to BR, right?
Also, @ ToN - it doesn't hurt to be able to reason with some issues.
And @ the anechoic nebula, what I meant was that usually, a "no" sign is an indication of "prohibited" which in other contexts can be taken as "disliked" or "no way". Therefore the crossbuster can mean "No Christianity" to some people.

there's a fine line between being anti-dogmatic and anti-religion. Greg Graffin knows the value of faith.
I don't see why people would think they hate jesus from the logo. If a shop has a no dogs sign it doesn't necessarily mean the owner hates dogs.

And as it was written in Tested; "No Bad Religion song can make your life complete." - this is the defining part of BR's persona.

The crossbuster is also widely misunderstood - at first glance people think "Oh no, those punkers hate Jesus", but don't you realise that the crucifix has become such a commercialised symbol, especially in the USA, and BR are using the crossbuster as a method of saying "Don't let the system change your own thoughts" ?
The use of a crucifix is not directed specifically at just Christians - it's such a commonly-used religious symbol, that is can actually represent ALL religions. And with all religions, there needs to be challenge. And that comes in the form of BAD RELIGION.
Amen to that, I say.

"No Bad religion song can make your life complete..."
BR aren't necessarily anti-Christian - I mean, they might have been critical of it and religion as a whole during their early years, but as they matured and developed a more intellectual view on things (I'm not saying they were dumb before), fans like us should understand that they are merely questioning the concept of religion, questioning what influences people and not just shouting "BURN THE FUCKING CHRISTIANS" down the mike.

Do people seriously think that christians who listen to Bad Religion don't know that the message is inherintly anti-christian? Of course they know that. But they identify with the intelligent questioning nature of the songs (I'm not a christan but I did grow up Catholic and can guarantee that questioning is a huge part of someone's faith).
BTW, that wasn't a horrible version. It's not like he didn't know the chord progression as some of you seem to think, he was tweaking it to get a different feel. I didn't think it was all that great but I'm not gonna say he doesn't know the song or what it means.

so who the fuck cares if they are christians or if you like the song or not?
They DO credit Bad Religion for it, and if you dont like it (I am not sure I like it)dont listen. Why cant christians listen to Bad Religion? Isnt that a possitive step?
Does that mean Bad Religion cant tour with MxPx, who I am quite sure are Christian. oh, wait they did that.

Issues? Yeah... issues. What I'm angered by is the fact that there are actually religious people listening to Bad Religion and not knowing at all that they're against religion. In the one case with my "friend" (for example) is that he's too naive to understand that there are actually people who don't believe in what he believes. What I'm specifically angry about is that he's not the only person that thinks this way. I mean I don't care if someone believes in religion, but I do care about whether or not they're arrogant, naive assholes about it. There are so many other people like him in the world, and this video just opened some of that realization to me. If you hadn't of mentioned that the (Christian) band Switchfoot did this cover, then I probably would've just said that it sucks balls. There, I explained myself. [/endrant]

Even though its obvious an acoustic version was "attempted" (attempted meaning in this context completly pulled out of the guitarists asshole in a selfish act outside of his obviously bored band members), it sounds like complete crap.
I wouldnt be surprised if they just did it so they could sound cool and hip and political for that one fucking line , "when all soldiers lay their weapons down". If i were their drummer, which i wouldnt be unless I had a labotomy, I would interrupt this asshole playing and say "gtfo this is gay, im gonna play in a noise band".
Also i think this guy is more an asshole for taking advantage of everyone's ignorance of bad religion releasing that song fairly recently (and of bad religion in general), and wanted to sound "wise", "contemporary", and "musically important and/or relevant" by co-opting a million light years better band than SwitchfungusfootToughActinTanactin will ever be.
Fuck Switchfoot. Fuck them up their stupid asses.

Fuck them up their stupid asses. |

wow. that was gay. This song came out four years ago and he said it was one of his favorite songs growing up. Is he like 18 now or something? My favorite BR song growing up was American Jesus cuz, er, I was growing up when it came out.

Hey h0m0s don't jump on me for this cover! This is still news regardless. They're a pretty big act covering BR. Just FYI, I posted this comment on the youtube page before it got posted here:
"They just raped that song. I'm usually pretty open with covers, and I tend to like them even when most other BR fans talk shit... but this was inexcusable. It wouldn't have been that bad if he just refrained from 'effing up the chorus so terribly."
You guys should smoke some dank.

Great, another uneccessary, conscious effort to integrate the very two ideals that will never find compromise... And I think we all know which one is the credible one. Even if the cover isn't directed at any specific attempt, I have a feeling the band knew what it was doing when they covered a BR song. It's pretty funny, actually... the arrogant optimism of relgious peoples.

More than Neil Davis, the people in charge of pasting the news submitted are to blame. Oh, wait a minute... Neil Davis is in charge of that department as well, go figure...

This no talent hack managed to desecrate both a great song and my beloved Improv. Is it just me, or did his guitar rarely match what he was singing? Fuck, it was so monotonous, he might as well have sung it while strumming a single chord the whole way through. Thanks Neil, really. Boltzzman, send me proof of his death.

This is only news because I'm going to kill this guy.
Neil, why do you subject other human beings to this? I'm not angry...more like homicidal (not towards you, though I should be). I literally know 15 years olds who could do a better cover than that. There's a REASON the other members of the band looked bored. Horrible.
