Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz don't need Bad Religion. Unlike many of their aging punk rock peers, who continue to slug it out on the revival circuit, the leaders of Bad Religion aren't hurting for cash or challenges.
Dr. Graffin, Bad Religion's vocalist, is a part-time professor at UCLA teaching life science. Graffin, who has a Ph.D. from Cornell University in evolutionary paleontology, co-authored ?Is Belief in God Good, Bad or Irrelevant?: A Professor and a Punk Rocker Discuss Science, Religion, Naturalism and Christianity,? with Preston Jones.
Gurewitz, Bad Religion's guitarist, is the founder and CEO of Epitaph Records, which is one of the largest and most successful independent record labels. Epitaph, which formed in 1981 to put out Bad Religion discs, is home to such popular punk bands as Rancid, Pennywise and NOFX.
Bassist Jay Bentley, who formed the band with Graffin and Gurewitz in 1980, marvels that his longtime pals are still interested in the group. ?They could obviously be focusing on other things,? Bentley said while calling from Vancouver, B.C. ?They have other careers and lives that would be fulfilling enough for just about anyone else but they still want Bad Religion to continue.?
Bad Religion, which will perform tonight at the Electric Factory, is out behind its 14th album, ?New Maps of Hell.?
?We're living in a turbulent time,? Graffin said. ?We all need to do something. We need to take some kind of stand.?
Bad Religion remains an energetic and often incendiary, live act.
?We've never lost our desire as a live act,? Bentley said. ?It's still just as exciting for us as it was in our early days. We still have the drive.?
But where does the middle-aged act get its energy? ?I don't know,? Graffin said. ?I don't sleep much. What I'm balancing now reminds me of graduate school except that I'm older and it's tougher. But I obviously love what I'm doing. If I didn't love it, I wouldn't be doing it.?
According to Bentley, Bad Religion, which also includes guitarists Brian Baker and Greg Hetson and drummer Brooks Wackerman, will be around for years as long as the band continues to churn out new material. ?The last thing anyone in this band wants to be is a revival act,? Bentley said. ?We don't want to play just the old songs. We have to matter or we'll cease to exist. It's not as if the guys in this band are looking for things to do. We all have things to do but we're compelled to make time for Bad Religion.?

almost no setlist variation between shows... even the song order is the same. looks like the only thing philly got that dc didn't was "let them eat war." no big deal. now if Sage Francis would actually pop out and do his bit, I'd LOVE to see let them eat war.

Im glad i saw you guys lastnight at the electric factory. i was front and center for the whole show. great job. ill see you tomorrow at allentown. im sure they will have better equipment there LOL j/k. you sill rocked the place.
