This is an amazing video!!!...it brings out the old school punk spirit of bad religion. Not to mention that the image montage sticks to the meaning of the lyrics.
I am a video producer and a BR fan for more than 15 years, when I saw this video it reminded me of No control and against the grain days. This band does not need to produce a big budget video to keep people happy.
Whoever doesn't like it, I guess they can wait for the new Black eyed peas video so the can have something to look while they listen to meaningless "music".
Cheers from Mexico and keep up the great work bad Religion!!

This is one of their greatest visual works. I like the 80's vibe with the doodles flying around; from Greg's mouth, for instance. It's great.

I don't think the video is particularly impressive. However, in regards to the budget and set - a blacked-room with a fence - it was a sensible, albeit an unadventurous way to approach it. Verbinski was even more financially limited when he made Atomic Garden; but importantly, Verbinski understood the song better than Draw Picture's "Michael" did with "New Dark Ages" - in saying that, Atomic Garden had a more centralised theme.
It seems that BR makes music videos to expose their music, rather than gain any accolades for innovation, which I guess is admirable. And, it's good to see them using a small London based film/video company (in fact, based just 30mins away from me!).
But, overall, chucking together a bunch of effects: lightning, opacity, rescaling, colorizing, etc, makes this video a bit messy, I think. It's conceptually driven, but to such an extent that it doesn't offer us a story or interpretation, which would have given it a bit more sincerity.

"Why do I get the impression that it's the younger eMpTyV generation kids around here who want a polished video with shiny faces in it...?"
It took me a whole to get your eMpTyV comment, but I love it. MTV did everything possible to ruin music, and the music video. Not to mention all the stupid real worlds and road rules and 10 spot shit to clutter the channel.
I will admit a video is bad when i see one. Like here is a bad example but it works Metalla videos One and Enter Sandman both fit the song in lyrics and music
I Disappear and St Anger both suck ass.
I think Mr A just like sthe video. Just cause a bounch of people dont, dont try to change the views of people who do like it

"anyway, i am not sure why you think people are disrepectful towards the band when they state that the video isnt good."
That's true, but it depends on the way of voicing a displeasure (towards the band). Wasn't the amount of moaning and bitching the reason Brett closed down the official BR website?
Personally, I think the flack Bad Religion and especially Brett received recently for recording a song like Honest Goodbye was appalling - and it seems to repeat again now. I'm a bit tired of the bickering, too and I rest my case now.

"If I want to listen to music, I listen to music, but I don't sit down in front of a TV screen apathetically and inactively for hours." that is quoting, i just summed it up, i barely had to twist anything, just read a little between the lines. if i am wrong, i stand corrected, but with your previous comments i came to this conclusion. anyway, i am not sure why you think people are disrepectful towards the band when they state that the video isnt good. some bandmembers said it themselves that many of their videos arent great. the reason why a video turned out this or the other way doesnt really matter in the end. if you watch it, and you dont like it, no "reason" will make it look better.

I never stated that, but it's interesting how you twist my messages around and misquote me. Ironically enough, "stupid, apathetic drones" seems to be quite accurate:

OK, one last time. Of course some people obviously don't "get" why the video looks that way, otherwise there wouldn't be such disrespectful bickering again around here (remember the Honest Goodbye debate?) - disrespectful towards the band, that is.
1. BR don't have a huge budget. The times of selling several hundred thousand albums are over.
2. BR are no "video band" or "single band", they try to and concentrate on recording consistently good punrock albums. A decently produced promo video is just a bonus and not a focus at all.
3. Image and outer appearance is not (and shouldn't be) of any concern with this band, therefore I prefer album covers and music videos with less posing in front of a camera.
4. I, as well as Su, already tried to explain the atmosphere and the effect of this video.
5. This music video is the younger brother of Atomic Garden, and considering the political context and climate, this makes sense.

"People resorting to derogratory flamebaits is probably an indication that the argument has gone too far."
Absolutely.
My word choice may have been a bit too provocative, sorry, but I stand by my points. And I'm far from being "mad" while posting on an unofficial BR message board, I'm too old for that. I am quite irritated by the frequent backlash the band receives by their own "fanbase" in the last couple of years though.
Appreciate their current efforts while you can and don't take them for granted, Bad Religion won't be around much longer.

SeanChristian... pot calling kettle black. Your obnoxious accusations and personal flames aside, why aren't people allowed to say that they like the damn video? Your opinion is just that, IT'S NOT A FACT. At least be courteous enough to grant people what you want from them, the right of a personal opinion. Is it so hard to imagine that not everything is done with an ulterior motive in mind? Stop throwing around baseless stereotypes. Nobody here is praising everything BR does, and who are you to judge, anyways? I'm sure most people posting on this site have enough dignity and mental capacity to decide for themselves if they genuinely, honestly like the video than being told what to think by you. And if not, congrats, you just missed the intrinsic message of BR music.

It may be in the same style as Atomic garden/struck a nerve, but these videos were made 10 years ago... It's different from their last videos... I think the purpose of the videos is also to get new fans and exposure. This video should acheive that. The song is very good and the video gets people attention... Over the years Bad Religion made bad and good videos but I think no one will agree on which were bad and which were good.

"and you are the only one who suggested right from the start, that the people who dont like it should leave this site and listen to other music."
Oh, I love guys who take statements out of context.
I was discussing the fact that some people want the band to be more in the focus of this video. But BR are not really about their image and outer appearance. Why do you think the vast majority of BR albums do not feature band photos on the cover? They worked their way up without any video promotion and I didn't know (or really care) how they looked like until I bought Against The Grain. So where's the hypocrisy here? You don't make any sense.
I think this video works brilliantly, especially paralleled with the Bush I era Atomic Garden, some don't. So be it, bye.

"there wouldnt be music videos around without MTV."
Boo fucking hoo. I don't know about the US, but I remember music videos to be played on obscure german TV shows like "Plattenk?che" since the mid 70ies. MTV was not needed, it was only a tool by music conglomerates to sell more units since the 80ies. Undergound rock, punk and metal was and still is almost nonexistant on these kind of music channels.
I bought magazines back then and nowadays I surf the internet for music information. I only rarely watch any TV, and especially not music television. If I want to listen to music, I listen to music, but I don't sit down in front of a TV screen apathetically and inactively for hours. And in the time of the interactive web 2.0, MTV is more superfluous than ever anyway.
And "punk police"? I'm too old for this kind of bullshit. Throwing the term "punk police" around is not more than a knockout argument for lack of better substantiation.

That was my point.
"It's okay to admit the videos lame.."
I absolutely despise this kind of childish holier than thou attitude. Get it in your thick skulls that people actually like the video for what it is. No autosuggestion involved.
Why do I get the impression that it's the younger eMpTyV generation kids around here who want a polished video with shiny faces in it...?
Yes, Bad Religion already produced several similar videos. So what, BR more or less write relatively similar albums for 20+ years, too. And I don't want it any other way.

i actually like No Substance, its very different from the fast albums and at the same time has many nice melodies. but i agree, saying you dont like a video doesnt make you a hater. i just find it's a pity that most BR videos don?t even come close to the quality of the music they are supposed to represent or support.

you guys.. i love bad religion as much as anyone, but you guys are just being stubborn to defend this video. It's the same old thing. its not a bad video at all, but the same concept of grany video interspliced with apocalyptic images is overdone. this band has much higher potential.
It's okay to admit the videos lame.. it doesnt mean the band doesnt KICK ASS..
just because you LOVE BR doesnt mean you cant admit when something by them sucks... I mean, do you defend No Substance, too?
(actually strange denial is a decent song)

i dont see why people care if it high budget or low. they DIY attitude of the punk scene leans more to the low budget side of things. the flashy images and confusing content, to me, makes is a great punk video

"As to the video, I actually like it. Always have been a fan of the Atomic Garden/Struck A Nerve approach, and it works very well with the message NDA conveys. The blindingly fast changing of the individual scenes emphasizes the angry, vitriolic urgency of the song itself. The different settings are quite appropriate, too. Very atmospheric.
I don't get people who want a video of the band just standing there. It wouldn't convey the meaning of the song at all and thus, wouldn't fulfill the main purpose of a music video."
I agree with you and you make good points. it is a good video. they video fits the song, both lyrically and musicly

"And you seem to confuse high budget with quality - a bit shallow and even absurd in a punkrock context me thinks." - if you want to use the punkrock card, then you will have to add that videos arent punkrock. and yes, i think high budget is a good way to get a good quality video cause you can get a good director. can you make a good video with less money? sure, when you have a good idea, but i dont see it here.

Woo, the news section is working for me again! Unfortunately, the forums are still down.

I didn't mean it like, that, but it's just like, cluttered with effects. The more I watch the video the more I like it, but it's still basically like struck a nerve and atomic garden.
The more I watch it the more I like it, but it's still not a very good video IMO. Also, I probably should have left broken off the list of good videos in a row. I completely forgot about that whole broken lense scene where the technician comes and replaces it.
This video still is in my opinion not one of their greatest videos. Not the worse now that I remember raise your voice(wtf, are those things giant rat heads?manbearpigs?), and 10 in 2010(wtf shirtless guys fighting over a tv).

wow, MR. A . If Bad Religion would make ONE video that has the same production quality like Linkin Park, the BR dont have good videos image would be gone. Luckily, Bad Religion has the better music. but you seem to confuse low budget with "a subcioncious level". whats so subconcious about this video? a perfect circle or tool video might have a subconcious level, not BR.

the broken video would have worked if it wasnt for that plumb broken lense scenes. the audience doesnt need to be remembered how the song is called. and i wouldnt say its their worse, i mean, how about the raise your voice video? and the 10 in 2010? i dont know what happened here, perhaps the budget for the video was gone after the honest goodbye video. the ideas sure were.

"This one I don't think that theirs any scenes where you can see anyone without some effect."
Indeed, that's the way it's upposed to be - and it really works. You don't see everything spelled out in this video, no musicians, no big picture. It's an overflowing stream of information, an overabundance of tiny bits and pieces from the crusades to Abu Ghraib. Basically, it's a visual mess without any obvious direction and meaning, total chaos. Just the way Atomic Garden was produced, back when Dubbya's father was in office - oh wait a minute...!
So, you want to see "artists" making stupid moves in their videos? Go away and watch some Britney Spears or Linkin Park bullshit, not Bad Religion. They are beyond that and work an a subconscious level instead.

I posted this comment on bad-religion.net while this site wasn't working.
"Honestly IMO, this vid sucks, even by Bad Religion's video standards(I LOVE their music, hate most of their videos). It's worse than Streets of America.
Too flashy, mostly just Graffin and Brooks.
It's sort of like a color version of Atomic Garden, with more effects, but in Atomic Garden you can see each member of the band fully, even if just for a couple seconds. This one I don't think that theirs any scenes where you can see anyone without some effect."
Their last 3 videos were pretty good, Broken, Sorrow, and LA is burning was great. Even the New America was pretty good. This video just sucks.

this video sucks, sorry to say it, but if this got their ok and the honest goodbye didnt, then the honest goodbye video must reaaaaallyyyy suck. this video is like a cheap struck a nerve version 2.0 (yeah, not atomic garden, i think there are way more similarities to struck a nerve), just without the "original" idea. after the rather high quality "la is burning" video, i have no idea how they can end up with this video. not creative, not subtle, very amateurish.

Very nice!!! I find the video much better than the previous ones. Atomic Garden was my favorite video. It's true they are a little similar but still there is a difference. You don't get tired of this video cause there are many images and each time you see it you find something new or interpret something different...
Maybe they should make a video in an high school with almost naked girl around them and at the end they could destroy the stage. It would fit so well with the band. I wonder what people are expecting from them...

Arrogant as I am, I guess some people simply don't have the mental capacity and imagination to "get" why this video is produced and directed that way.
This music video, just like Atomic Garden, rules.

I thought it was great...and yeah, of course it's very apocalyptic, I mean the song is called the New Dark Ages. I liked it when the little girl was praying and the horns appeared above her head. Also when Jesus was on the cross and he turned into a torture victim....but thats just me

It was fun enough. You should basically expect some "apocalyptic" pictures. It's meant to appeal to a certain audience.

Very very VERY Atomic Gardenish. Only ten times worse. Pretty crappy to be honest, but it's not like we're not used to it.

Not very imaginative - just the usual array of apocalyptic type images strewn together. Videos like this just make great bands look ordinary.
