Yeah Jay, I seem to recall from the early press releases for NS, that you talked about going into the studio and hung out listening to stuff that inspired you - "And kids, what can we learn from that?"
But who is to blame for Into The Unknown? Brett, for buying that damn keyboard, or you for not staying to safe the project? LOL

No way! For me RFH is the last album of the great BR momentum! Fresh sounds, great personal perspective, it's just a great, thoughtful, exciting album. I think they backpeddled sonically on STF a bit because punk was being shaped for radio, and then of course the remaining Atlantic years were spent trying to hold it together. That dynamic made for some superfun moments, and Brett's return made POB so thrilling; I just wish they'd get back to the sort of fuck-all freedom they had when making RFH. I think it might be their most creatively honest moments on record. Thank you, guys!

LOL, libidoanger, try listening to The Adolescents' "No Way" and then listen to "Hear It". Just listen to the first 20 seconds of each song. And yes, No Way is from waaaaay before Hear It.

I don't see the promblem in some simalarities in guitar or bass riffs. Hell, thats practically inevitable!
What matters more is simalarities in song melody. Like 'Hear it' and 'cats in the cradle'. What is the one and only matter with NS

ah yes, that is the annoying part - my hard disc crashed a while back so I lost it.
Will make it a priority to find it again to tell you. And trust me, it is nothing like Dads Bad News - it is so similar in structure that it ruined Shades of Truth for me :S
will try to find it again, so as to back up my claim LOL
(and no, I am not on a mission to discredit Bad Religion at all!)

What UK Subs song is it?
I know NOFX had a song (Possibly Dad's Bad News) on So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes which had a similiar intro to Shades of Truth.

Heres my hat off to Steve for sharing pretty much my exact sentiments of the songs on NS and NA - Is anyone else aware that the UK Subs made a song with a bass lead and structure pretty much identical to "Shades of truth"? Since the did it before Bad Religion it killed me on Shades of truth - fortunately it is the only time I can recall Bad Religion exercizing plagiarism...

Thats the fuckin worst speel of shit review, article, whatever you wanna call it, ive ever read.
Im sick to shit of hearing peoples opinion on no substance, or any of their albums, like what you like and leave it alone if you dont, not to mention getting band members names wrong
Why would this even get posted on here.
On a more positive note, B.R blessed N.Z with a wicked show last week!!
Thanks heaps for the only show i assume we will get!

I really like No Substance and The New America but they are surely BR's weakest albums. Although these two albums contain some of BR's best songs (In So Many Ways, Believe It, Shades Of Truth), other tracks like Mediocre Minds, Raise Your Voice, It's A Long Way To The Promise Land and A World Without Melody would have never got remotely close to warrant inclusion on any albums before The Grey Race or any albums from The Process Of Belief onwards.

how many of the members have actually done drugs, know Brett and Jay have, but has anyone else? I Read that Greg G did pot but I don't rember wear and since he talks about how he wanted to be a rock-star that "didn't drink on stage or take Drugs" I'm Guessing that was inaccurate. Just wondering

New America wasn't as good as other recent albums, but I'm still glad it was released, and No Substance was a great album.

The only interesting part of this article was the experimenting with drugs and Todd Rundgren. From what I have heard I would say the drugs sound the most fun (dont do em though, kids!) :D

1994, peak of grunge? More like 1992, in 1994 it was already declining (Kurt Cobain died in 1994. The only huge grunge album from that year was Soundgarden's Superunknown). 1994 was in fact the peak of 90's punk with Stranger Than Fiction, Dookie and Smash being released.

New America was so much better! Yes it was more 'poppy', but I still think it had some very good songs on, and no bad ones. No Substance had only a couple good songs, with a few average, and some even bad!

This article seems to insinuate that punk and grunge were adversarial in some way, and is obviously oblivious to the fact that they'd already recorded with Eddie Vedder.

I honestly liked No Substance better than New America. New America, in my opinion, was the worst due to it being way too mellow for a BR album. At least No Substance was still a punk album to a certain extent. Sure it wasn't excellent, but it was better than New America.
