How does someone like yourself who is being honored for very worthy academic achievements have friends like Greg Hetson who has a really screwed up daughter that he should discipline and attend to and become a parent to. How can you be related?

haha, I think knowing the truth is very very very important. But being happy is more important. But, it's a little like the Matrix. You can chose the red pill or the blue pill.
Some people may be happier chosing a happy life over the truth. (if it ?s the truth, maybe God does exist)

tommy, while I sympathize with your personal experience with your dad, I still disagree that it's better to believe something untrue and be happy than it is to know the truth. it's funny because someone contacted me about this post outside this message board and said it was courageous to say that because this board is dominated by relativists. lol. Sorry, I feel like I'm insulting someone when I fail to at least ATTEMPT to show them why religious belief is irrational (and inherently bad for other reasons that don't necessarily have to do with that particular person).

I am totally behind Boxcar! I already had my hands on my keyboard to type almost the exact same reply as Boxcar did to simian. People should decide for themselves what they believe. When you are a christian and you chose to listen to bad religion. It's your own choice. But offending people in their face is wrong. I used to be like that a couple of times. I always tried to pick on stuff from the bible to my die-hard christian dad. And after a two years he just almost cried and said: I know there is a lot of stuff from the bible that is proven wrong. I read other books." And for the first time in my life I thought that maybe some people are happier believing something even if it may not be true. The main goal in life is to find happiness, not being right

Hey, just thought I would say that I was second row on the left with my girlfriend. We got to sit behind Greg's relatives. I'm not sure, but I thought that Gregs father, mother, grandfather and fiance were there. I took some candid pictures of them and some awesome ones of Graffin.
I also sent an email to the admin asking if he wanted my pictures for the website. In my opinion, i thought the old man with the cane was his grandfather and the man next to him was his father, the woman next to him his grandfather, and the woman next to her was his fiance. I could be wrong thou.

Man, this is why I shouldn't be online when I'm half asleep. I never fucking learn. Okay, you're right, rationality is not relative. I agree, and I do believe that there is objective truth, thank you very much. Your first post sounded really aggressive. It wasn't exactly WHAT you were doing, it was the attitude that came off--it reminded me of the really annoying people on campus that try to convert you, with the whole, "I'm right, you're wrong and tell you so when you're not doing anything because I'm the one who can possibly save your soul" self-righteousness they present. Hence, the evangelist analogy. It struck a nerve and led to an extremely poor use of hyperbole on my part. Sorry, and I think I'll stop posting in order to not incriminate myself further.

Rationality is not relative (look it up). I don't think I should even have to point this out on a board like this: the difference between an evangelist and me is that the evangelist TELLS others WHAT to think and backs that up with a threat. What I do is SHOW people HOW to think, and that leads to unraveling logical fallacies and circular reasoning. I never threaten people or call them stupid. You're not one of those "everything is true" relativists are you? 'Cause I like them even less than religious people! Where do they get the gall to say there's no objective reality?

Simian: Trying to convince the believers that their personal beliefs are irrational--unless they confront you--makes you as bad as the evangelical theists spouting off about eternal hellfire. What you consider irrational is completely relative; you can't just attack people like that.

jab, why the vague "not everyone in the band are atheist" ?? An atheist is someone who lacks a positive belief in an active god. Are you saying there may be theists in the band? And if so, why aren't they owning up to it? For me, the lyrics of Bad Religion have definitely played a role in strengthening my agnostic atheism (yes, most atheists are agnostic atheists...) I don't think we should take a neutral position toward irrational beliefs, though. I take on theists all the time and try to help them see that they're being irrational - I feel that this is the ethical thing to do.

interesting how Graffin is distancing himself away from the "atheist" label (he prefers to be called a naturalist). As for "BR's Message", it seems to me that they've been pretty consistent with their views toward a certain dominant religion since the days of how could hell ...
maybe we can thank the current administration and the change of political climate in America for BR's more brash lyrics.

watcho.. you'd have to be far more specific than that. to say that "lyrically most of NMOH and a lot of TESF come from a perspective that's awfully close to the kind of arrogance you speak of"... i would need to hear your interpretation. the challenge here is to disassociate the material from the perceived intent of its creator.

Jabberwock, it's terribly refreshing to hear you say that. To me BR's message has always been about idealism and a process rather than a particular dogma. Even still, I love that it's "BR's Message," rather than a pure belief shared by all of you. Still, it seems to me that lyrically most of NMOH and a lot of TESF come from a perspective that's awfully close to the kind of arrogance you speak of. That's not a jab at the songwriters, it just seems to be a predominant tone in the newer material. Do you sense something similar, maybe by a different name?

I'm not sure if this has already been posted - in any case, it's pretty interesting:

Graffin interview with "Here and Now". He talks about "God's Love", nihilism, and his enjoyment of asking questions and then not bothering to answer them ;).

On that note I have to say that I've noticed out of all of my friends who I've tried to get into Bad Religion, a huge majority of the people who liked the music and wanted to hear more were religious.
ikillkenny, that's cool. Thanks for making the effort though.

Hey guys, sorry I wasn't able to make it out to Harvard to record it (in the event that the show isn't actually broadcasted). I had bought tickets and was in the area, but the event I was at ran way late and ended 30 minutes after the Harvard thing ended.

just for the record.. not everyone in the band are atheist. it's what strikes a decent moral balance. it would be too easy to just attack faith, but it's tough work to focus on the results of faith. obviously we tend to report the negative actions created when mankind arrogantly assumes superiority (that includes atheist's and scientist's too!).

anechoic nebula: Greg even said that it seemed a little "final", and joked that he'd be retiring next week. But then in all seriousness he said he hoped his greatest achievements were yet to come.
EATYOURDOG: here's a tidbit about "Cease" - Greg said that the opening lines of the song had been inspired by the destruction of the forest and trees in his neighborhood as more houses were added. He explains it better than I ever could, so hopefully Harvard will have that recording of the show up soon.

A couple of interesting points from the event:
1. Greg was asked what the hell "Beyond Electric Dreams" was about, and he said every year, he and Brett go backpacking through the Seirra Nevada. It's about being off the PowerGrid at 11,000 feet above sea level.
2. Greg said there was an album of acoustic Bad Religion stuff coming out next month.
3. Greg's Dad was their, an old bald man with a cain. "
#2 is referring to New Maps of Hell Deluxe Edition, which has already been announced but not all the details are known aside from it will have an "Acoustic EP" with old and some new BR songs done acoustically. It is rumored that the said "new" songs are going to be off the next album. We won't know until June though...

Again, sorry for the crappy quality. If you search youtube for Graffin videos a few others (better ones) will pop up. I really wish I had recorded him singing "Live Again"...it's very moving when sung on just a guitar.
And yeah, his dad was so cute! He was tapping his foot/clapping along to Greg's singing. I tried to capture it while filming, but it's probably too dark to see. Oh well.

I took a few videos, but none of them turned out very well (I wasn't too far back, but the lighting wasn't that great for the quality of my camera). It was a great evening, though. I was able to meet Greg afterwards....very cool guy.
Could you post them anyway?

I took a few videos, but none of them turned out very well (I wasn't too far back, but the lighting wasn't that great for the quality of my camera). It was a great evening, though. I was able to meet Greg afterwards....very cool guy.

They mentionned it would be available as a web broadcast and an mp3 download from WGBH (http://www.wgbh.org/). I don't see it yet, but I would give them a couple days. Many persons were taking pictures and videos also. Overall, a very nice evening, especially the Q & A session with Greg. Songs played : Suffer, Cease, Live Again, Sorrow & the Highway

The thing is, Graffin doesn't rant nonsensically about atheism. Atheism is a negative thought system, in the respect that it denies theism, however, Graffin (as we'll know) is a supporter of humanism and, predominately, naturalism. I'm quietly confident that a society within Harvard will appreciate this. Moreover,I think this award is a consequent of Graffin's thesis, immensely catalysed by BR's music - I honestly don't think BR could be praised, independently, of assisting the advocacy of intelligent atheism. Not because it has failed in that task, but because for every few astute fans, there's a bigoted anti-theist, who just wants to whine and shout. Philosophically, the strongest argumentative standpoint for dismissing religious and teleological arguments is to essentially "fix" it (viz. Hume, et al). With the institutions of faith, however, that's simply not possible - and so, atheists can only lead by example, whilst maintaining their rights and offering their arguments (like BR).

Boxcar what you said was part of the point I was making and I do want everyone to get along but by making the whole article about athiesm and making it sound superior and saying the main point of what Graffin is saying is don't believe in god is arrogant and ignorant at the same time. If you notice I put "to each his own at the end" clearly stating that I accept all forms of belief. The whole thing about calling Dethpicable an ignorant kid was his choice of language and inferred arrogance that could only come from a kid not because I don't like his beliefs.

aaaaaaaaaa: your attitude is just as bad as the intolerant Atheists. Can't we all just get along? Fuck!
And... I can't be the only one annoyed by how the music supposedly "gears" listeners towards atheism and humanism. My understanding is that it wasn't, but instead it gives the listeners who don't believe, something to relate to. Another person to show that despite what their friends think, or what the rest of the world thinks, it's okay to have a different opinion. I know it did for me.

This whole thing puts too much emphasis on athiesm. It sounds so damn pretentious and nothing but a slam on religious people, which I'm not but the wording just rubs me the wrong way. Also I wouldn't say that his not believing in god is the main theme of Bad Religion songs but rather encouraging people to think for themselves. Whoever wote this has their head up their ass. Athiests and religious people are just as bad as Liberals and Conservatives and this article proves that athiests are just as disgusting. I'm not trying to slam Greg, congrats to him, but I do find athiests dispicable. TO EACH HIS OWN!!!

who cares if it is a hit or not. Not important. The guy is obviously not going to be a big br fan. He is just doing his job. If i had to write report on U2 then I'm sure the fans would notice something wrong in what I said as they are not my fav band. The important thing is that it is really cool that he is recognized as an important speaker in a specific area. In my day Harvard would never do this. Its great news and well deserved!!!! congrats to Dr Graffin.
