The Grand (A Review by Steve)
BR finally gets back to the mainland after 22 hrs trekking up from South America. This is the first time in years BR has been to SF and it was a long time coming. This is not a standard concert venue, but rather a real ballroom. The echo was pretty intense, the bass high, and in some places the reverb was so bad you couldn't hear the lyrics. But, get dead center and Blam! you are blasted with sound.
First up was Lightin' Woodcock. What can I say about Bill... he is nuts! Some of his songs make me fall over laughing. Not to mention his woodsy hunters look. Just a unique character. His other band is Miss Derringer!
The Bronx took a loud entrance. Truthfully, it was too much for the venue as the sound became meshed into one scream sound instead of music. Sorry guys, bad place for your sound.
Next it was Bad Religion's turn. Even though they were tired, they put out some massive sound. The first song was Digital Boy. Fat Mike(NOFX) came out for his bit and ripped it up! To bad the mic was down so far the first few songs!
Hetson seemed less jumpy and quite tired from the flights and layovers and the others seemed delirious, often times chirping in with odd things ive never seen before, like Brian chasing after Jay during "A Walk". He played the guitar almost like he was a duck quacking those first few notes, and he would half waddle toward Jay strumming. It was hilarious.
Also, during News From The Front, Graffin started making up random lyrics. Some to do with Japan, and other such rambles. After the song Jay said he would never play that song again because no one liked it or knew it. He even asked the crowd to raise their hands if they knew the song. Not many did. Too bad, the song kicks arse.
Jay did a beavis impression, claiming he needed "TP for his bunghole", then said "I am the great cornholio." At one point in the show someone threw up a tiny cross necklace (looked wood) Graffin held it up and sarcastically said "it was the cross little baby jesus was hung on" then threw it back. Jay reached for it like nooooo! "that was the little ..baby..jesus.. meh." Later the cross was thrown back up and Jay caught it and put it on saying "it came back!"
Graffin said he was getting old, and apologized ahead of time if he messed up any songs. Right after that he messed up the start of generator, saying "see!" then laughing. He mentioned that The Grand was filled with hippies and the bands they created at one point, saying how they faded and left us, and soon BR will fade and make way for the next. (I thought of Markovian Process.)
The visuals were insane. Towards the end they added so many lights it could have been a Daft Punk show. As the show ended, we were immediately shouted saying we needed to leave the band wasnt coming out. People were almost forced out of the venue, the staff was quite rude not allowing people to even go past the building to get to their cars. Forcing most to walk a block the opposite way tsk tsk .. the fans just paid your salary treat us with respect and you will get it back!
Thanks to StevenF!

Yea if you include warpeds ive been to so many shows my head spins, but I have to say "the grand" was not one of the better ones. Slims.. far better... HOB romp for socal... MUCH MUCH better. Bottom of the hill, oh hell yea..
the grand? prolly needs to stick to dancing and dining.
Fat mike was all over the venue as he always is when he is with the gang.
How do you go all over USA if your a norcal resident, Im confined to the surrounding states as cost of gas and airfare are lude.
BTW if you look at my pictures, I believe you are sadly mistaken about the number of people in the venue, more like 1000+
(tons on the floor including the few hundred UPSTAIRS.. yeaaa..)
big echoish venues and festivals=lose
small awesome clubs=win

A northern California native, I've been going to Bad Religion concerts since the 80's.
This venue was THE BEST! I've seen the band perform at.
This includes big concerts in Germany, an outdoor venue at Long Beach California, the usual suspect, ie; Catalyst, Gillman, Slims. When asked how many BR shows I've been to...I have to shrug. Only thing I know for sure is that I can say 3 times for the NMOH album. 9:30 Club D.C., Mandalay Bay H.O.B. Las Vegas, and now the appropriately named "Grand".
It's a mystery to me how they made any money off this show. There couldn't have been more than 500 people there.
So rad that the Fat Wreck crew was there.
First time I got to speak with Fat Mike (not Fat and really short) even though I've seen NOFX whole bunch of times too.
PS* NOFX in Baltimore late October YAHOO!
GREAT CONCERT. Can't wait to see them again.
I always tell my wife ME: "this might be my last chance to see them"
HER: You've been saying that since 1993 when we met.

I was there; front row just left of center with my 15-year-old daughter. The vocals were a little drowned out but the concert was a blast. There was a big guy trying to muscle his way to the front; that was rude. I told him to back off; he saw I was protecting my daughter from the mosh overflow and then he was cool with me. He moved a couple people to my left and then pushed them out of the way so he could get to the front rail--still rude.
Anyway, awesome concert. I would love for them to come back and play at Slim's, the Fillmore, or the Catalyst in Santa Cruz.

one of the setlists, either jays or gregs had LATCH KEY KIDS on it.. also ALONG THE WAY was not on the setlists..
The reason that we put that "Actual setlist" comment, is because sometimes the band does play different songs vs the setlists.
Anyway all the songs that were on the list were sang, with the exception of the added along the way encore starter.

I was at this show as well, writing down the songs as they played them, and my notes correspond exactly with the photographed setlist, so I don't know where the "Actual Setlist" comes from.

Yeah that was a really fun show, apart from the big fat bros I was standing next to part of the time. The sound was quite good where I was standing up front, although I was there for Hot Water Music a couple weeks before and it sounded terrible. And they did actually play "You".

Just to clear up some terms, the Front of House is the mix position. Everything is mixed from that point, everything will sound best from that point for obvious reason that that is where the FOH Engineer is and the FOH is going to be mixed to sound good from that position. The reason things sound bad right up front is because you're standing next to or under or behind the speakers. You're not hearing the mix properly because you're not longer in front of the system.

As a general rule, when they set the levels it's what the guy at the booth can hear, so the soundboard is generally the best sound.
For recording, I stand RIGHT behind the desk, because that way the levels are good and you have about 20ft of no audience in front of you.

It depends on the venue but technically speaking the center of a venue is usually the best sound.. find the soundboard.. thats normally where the venues peak sound lvls are... normally..
for the grand it was all the way in the back... and go there and you can hear clear as day or back middle.. but front hell no. As for say something like bottom of the hill or slims.. front = awesome the clubs are tiny, it all depends really. But yes.. front normally isnt the best sound, just the best seat !
or .. stand.

Anybody who has RealPlayer, check out this link: http://tinyurl.com/3lrec4
If I'm not mistaken, that's the audio stream of the Area4 festival. It seems there was already a broadcast by EinsFestival on the 15.09. judging from http://www.rockpalast.de/konzerte/2008/area4/

Hmm never said you got reverb from the monitors being loud... I stated two things, could be the reverb, could be the monitors... hence the "and" in between.
Did you at least like the light show they put on toward the end?

"i was up front and I could barely hear the lyrics"
That's because standing in front is the worst possibly place to stand to enjoy a concert's sound.
You don't get reverb from monitors being too loud. You get feedback.
There was reverb and delay on his voice throughout the night. I thought it was a bit much, but the sound system also just wasn't designed for the kind of show.

Tobar you do know that they just got done with 22 hrs in a trip, with 3 layovers. Ack
I wouldnt even do a show after than much crap... anyway yea graffin seemed a bit off but hell all the other shows are seemingly. Also take account for reverb and that his monitor might have been to high or something.

honest goodbye. I don't know exactly if it was D but it was definitley a very low key. The cool thing is during that song they put so much reverb on his voice making it sound really cool. It was unique from
The other songs it sounded really good I thought.

Good to know about the news from the front being a joke.. I could sorta tell it was tongue in cheek. But I simply reported what I heard not what will be. Jay indeed said they wouldnt play it. But its been on every set since!
As for the random lyrics thats also odd news since.. ive only heard this song (each time they have played it) and never have they messed with the lyrics. Greg can never get em right so normally he just shoots in random words.

We arrived late to avoid the opening acts but sadly got there right in time for the Bronx. The lead singer reminded me of a poor man's Phil Anselmo, and a very poor one at that. The sound for the show was not of the highest quality, and to me, it sounded as if Greg was continously inhaling helium. His voice was much higher pitched than I remembered, though it had been a few years since they were in the area. I thought it was a great show. Not one of the best, but definetely high quality. The banter between the band member was, as always, one of my favorite parts of the show. I cannot wait to see them again!

The show was okay.
Didn't see the first band, the bronx was boring and fronted by a guy who seemed to beg for audience applause after every song.
Bad Religion were obviously tired and there was some energy lacking. The sound also might have taken away from the full effect as the venue only appeared to have horns and no subs in their system.
It was a fun show though. The lyric in news from the front was
"We're living in troubled times,
This was a japanese B-Side"
I don't think that was made up on the spot, pretty sure he's done that before. Jay wasn't serious about never playing that song again. I'm sure they will.
