It's been a long time coming. As a matter of fact, the last time we reported about it was July 2007. Back then we wrote that Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz would be interviewed.
One Nine Nine Four is a "documentary exploring the birth, growth and eventual tipping point of punk rock during the 90's". The bulk of the film's content will consists of band interviews and archive footage.
The film is narrated by skateboarder Tony Hawk and features interviews and footage of various bands and figures in the punk scene including Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Dexter Holland from The Offspring, Tim Armstrong from Rancid and Fat Mike from NOFX. Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 also appear in the film. And, of course, Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz.
Produced by the independent Australian company Robot Academy Films, the movie is expected to be released on 12 June 2009.
The official site has the following to say about the film:
"On April 5th 1994, the man who brought underground alternative music into the mainstream, Kurt Cobain, was found dead from a self inflicted shot gun wound to the head. In the same year a little known band out of the bay area in Northern California called Green Day released ‘Dookie’ which would go on to sell over 19 million copies worldwide. In the same year another band from Orange County in Southern California called The Offspring released ‘Smash’ and went on to have the highest selling independent record of all time on independant punk label, Epitaph. If ‘Grunge’ died in 1994 with the death of Kurt, Punk was now the biggest musical style in the world and was reborn into a new body through the likes of Green Day, The Offspring, Blink 182, Bad Religion and the hordes of successful bands on indie labels like NOFX, Pennywise and Rancid. This film documents the 90’s incarnation of ‘punk rock’ from the dark days of the mid 80’s to the resurgence of the East Bay punk scene, the Socal surf and skate movement to the eventual start of the Warped Tour. We follow the stories of the artists, labels, managers and producers that were part of punk rocks most successful time period… Ever."
Anyway, a 6 minute teaser already was available since November 2007, but now a new (and shorter) trailer was released. Check them both out below.
This is the 6 minute teaser from 2007:
And this is the new 90 second trailer:

1994... I was 15. My first punk rock show was that year. NOFX played at a relatively small venue close to home; part of the Mons Tour. You know, the one with the hideous shirt design. And yes, I bought one! :)
I even remember the shirt I was wearing at that show. It was an Against The Grain shirt that I borrowed from a friend... apparently because I simply wasn't cool (I still am not) and didn't have any "appropriate" clothes. Too bad it was a size XL or something because I basically drowned in it.
The only other thing I can remember of that show is that that place was packed and that I was standing right in front of Eric Melvin the whole time... feeling his sweat dripping on me. Yuck!

I wonder if they'll have a version that has all of Tim Armstrong's parts taken out, that would make it even more awesomer
why would anyone ever do that? Tim armstrong is sick!
Yeah he is sick, I think he has down syndrome or something.
I'm probably underestimating this, but why should the process of doing some interviews and then editing those into a 90 min film take two years?
Maybe the editor's a perfectionist.

Im really looking forward to this. I was 11 in 1994 when Dookie came out and in South Texas (not Austin) at that young of an age, mainstream music was all I had access to. Obviously that has now changed, but at that time, if it wasn't for "the explosion" of punk rock into the mainstream, I wouldn't have found out about punk, at least for a few years. This docu should be really good.

I was 17 in 1994 and discovered BR (and Pennywise) through the Momentum surfing vid.
1994 was an awesome year -
Helmet released Betty
Kyuss 'Sky valley' (didn't know till years later though)
Loreena McKennitt 'The Mask and Mirror'
Massive Attack 'Protection'
Nas 'illmatic'
Nirvana 'Unplugged'
Pantera 'Far Beyond Driven'
Pearl Jam 'Vitalogy'
Shellac 'At Action Park'
Soundgarden 'Superunknown'
Supergroove 'Traction'
And probably a whole lot more great albums...

They sure like the song "How much is enough". I've been waiting for this film for a looooong time. But I'm afraid I will only like it because Brett and Greg talk in the movie. I am very familiar with the story about the punk explosion of '94. So this documentary might be more interesting for the new generation of kids who just discovered punk pop and only watch this to see blink, green day and the offspring. I hope they think: "hmm that song "how much is enough" sounds pretty good, I'm gonna check out Bad Religion".
