Bad Religion are going to play at the "Laughs for Bald Bryan" fundraiser on Nov. 20th, in Los Angeles. Bald Bryan was a worker on Adam Carolla's radio show, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this year, and there is a fundraiser to help pay for medical bills.
There's a comedy line-up of Adam Carolla, Jimmy Kimmel, Greg Fitzsimmons, Dana Gould, Larry Miller and a musical line-up of The Dan Band and Bad Religion. Adam & Dr. Drew will be hosting the event and may even do a live rendition of Loveline.
For more details, check out http://www.laughsforbaldbryan.com.
Bald Bryan's real name is Brian Bishop and has won $100,000 on Who Wants to be a Millionaire in December 2008.
I have to agree this seems abit ..wierd? Especially since this guy doesn't seem all that poor (won 100 grand?, likes to go to Las Vegas and gamble??) and insured. On the other hand there's nothing wrong with helping out a friend. But this seems to be the american way.. I've seen the show "Extreme Home Makeover" where they give some poor family a frikkin mansion, but what about the rest of the community who continue to rot in poverty?
That show came to my home town to rebuild a home for a woman who is wheel chair bound, but yet has like two college degrees and 4 kids! I'm glad she was able to over come that whole wheel chair thing..but there are soooooo many other families in way worse conditions in this city that could have used a new house. and I think some of her kids got full college scholarships..crazy!
" because he means more to you than any of those thousands of hard-working blue collar americans who you don't even know what their names are. it's ok to show more empathy for the people you know about than for the ones you don't know."
This is why american corporations continue to exploit labor and resources from third world countries who are faceless victims to us. Social distance allows us to turn our shoulder and reap the benefits of others losses. Its the same mindset Mr. Benja is displaying here. Fucked. Everyday 340,000 people die of poverty and preventable disease. Thousands are dying all over the world, but since I can't see it happening, or I don't know them, I don't really care. Thats so fucked, product of a society where self-interest is paramount. When are people going to realize that suffering is suffering. It doesn't matter who is suffering, we're all sentient beings.
With that being said I don't think that what bad religion is doing is a bad thing per say. They are doing everything in their power to help someone who is suffering, if they had the ability to play a concert that would alleviate the medical bills for every person in the world who are suffering from brain tumors, I would imagine they would do so. But it's not really feasible so why not make as much of a difference as you can? If I could put on a concert to help poverty in India I would, I wouldn't let social distance blind me of the reality that POVERTY IS POVERTY whether its happening to you or an Indian thousands of miles away. Good shit Greg, and Mr. Benja I hope you can rethink your "empathetic" ways so they are not so narcissistic, and maybe one day the world will have a similar epiphany and become a slightly better place.

Sean,
Costly medical bills and healthcare situations are something I'm very familiar with, but does that make me start hating on philanthropic fund-raisers? No. If anything, it does the exact opposite. I jump at the opportunity to help others, regardless of my own suffering. You see things in such a negative way, and it makes me feel sorry for you. Good luck.

Just another reason I left the USA three years ago never to return. My life has improved 1000 fold since starting my life again in the Netherlands. I love it here. Health care, cannabis, violence is way down, it's a paradise.

i'm sorry to go off-topic, but sean, what this is about is that people help the ones who they want to help based on friendship or because you like that person and you know him. it's not "just because he's ill". it's not something "you've got to do", it's something you choose to do because you like that particular person. and the way that bad religion can help him is by doing a benefit show.
this is not about "helping the ones who suffer" in some kind of divine cause, it's about helping this specific person because you want to see him ok, because he means more to you than any of those thousands of hard-working blue collar americans who you don't even know what their names are.
it's ok to show more empathy for the people you know about than for the ones you don't know.

I agree with every word you are saying, sean. But you know, there is something wrong with America. People shouldn't pay that much for being sick. It's not like they do it on purpose.
I really hope for him and all the other people with cancer that they get better, but this guy already won $100k? What did he do with the money?

I hate benefits like this. It makes light of the millions of sufferers from illnesses like these who don't get to have a big benefit because they dont know any celebrities.
and everyone can pretend to be so sensitive and caring and donate to some guy who makes enough money and works with people who could pay the bills without being late on their mortgage, yet hundreds of thousands of hard-working, blue collar americans go bankrupt every year because of their diseases that no one seems to care about.
im just sayin

That's great news to hear BR is helping out. I pretty much listen to every episode of the Adam Corolla podcast the day they come out.
Adam's a fun guy to listen to, even if I don't take half of what he says seriously. I feel bad for Bald Brian just getting brain cancer randomly like that at a young age

So why Bad Religion? Are they going to play their normal punk songs? Or is Greg going to tell jokes? They should play "to another abyss"
And I know I can’t explain
The commotion in my brain,
Like a terrifying reality,
Deconstructed but inadequately...
