i use a free program called FreeRip for my audio conversions. the free version of the program allows you to convert audio files and rip cd's to high quality formats. very user friendly.

You can use Fluke to play FLAC in iTunes, but I don't know if it'll then work on an iPod.

thanks for the repost homer
at first you seemed brainless on the subject
i agree with you on all parts now. 192vs 320 .. (wow 192 used to be a standard LOL.. whooot age)
but in terms of a guy like me getting a bootleg from say someone who recorded it.. i cant edit the mp3 as it hacks of the highs n lows above or below XX depending on the compression method
As for apple lossless vs FLAC.. one really only HUGE diff..
last i checked flac meant free.. free lossless
apple = must have apple crap
and btw there is FLAC front end for windows.. turns any flac into anything and its a tiny tool.

I record and mix down a lot of music. When I save my multi tracks in mp3, yeah then the quality gets worse very quickly, but when you only use wavs and convert the mix down to mp3, you can not hear any difference with the wav. Maybe you loose some very high hz, but I agree with homersapien that you won't notice it on most stereos. I agree with badreligionsf that for editing you need the wav. But why would you want to edit this concert?

Well, audio engineering is also something I want to pursue in life, and I DO understand that things get compressed when going down to a smaller bit-rate. I, personally, prefer everything to be 320kbps for my music, but I also understand that with 192kbps there's BARELY a difference.
And I didn't mean for the 'it's in your head' thing to be offensive, because hey, I fall victim to that category as well. If a file is bigger, or whatever, then obviously you're going to believe that it is of higher quality, and you will search for those differences. I'm just saying that 192kbps is pretty much the tipping point from bad quality to good.

BRP, the 320-bit mp3s will sound fine, trust me BUT it's as badrelgnsf said to JamesRiot. Let's say you are only able to download one format, you should definitely go with FLAC. You can later on convert the files to sucky sucky mp3 if you find them too big for your iPod/mp3 player. Only software you need is FLAC Frontend. Also, the gurus will correct me if I'm wrong but I think that Winamp latest versions do play FLAC, too.

james once you have the flac you can make it into mp3.. but vice versa wont work..
i mean it will work but it will sound and have the peaks of the mp3 compression..not a lossless compression
homer you are totally wrong unless you speak of RETAIL cd.
i can totally tell the difference in just a 200$ pc setup with either headphones or even 2.1/5.1 surround sound
FLAC is far different its got nothing to do with 3000$ .. if you think so you need to take at least 2 classes in audio engineering to better understand whats really cut in mp3s vs whats not.
its not half the size or smaller for no reason
all in your head.. so offensive.. esp to someone like me who wanted to do that sorta stuff for a living.. later finding out you make crap money in it for the school you have to take.
apple lossless is not the same as flac or it would be called that.
but its close..
either lossless will be ok... fawk the mp3..

So, yeah. Most speaker equipment that doesn't cost $3000 can't present any difference past 192kbs of an mp3.
So, if you say you can hear the difference, then you must spend a lot of money on music equipment! Or, it's all in your head.

I would think the Apple Lossless would be the same quality as the FLAC and would play on your iPhone.

Are we going to be able to download two formats? I wouldn't mind the FLAC to listen to on my computer and the MP3 for my iPhone.
Either way, though, insanely excited for May 18th and a possible Vinyl release!

if you think mp3 sounds fine .. good for you mate
imo i can tell the difference in a live audio vs some albums
which are a bit hard to tell without a proper setup
if you do have one you can notice it right away.
bottom line is.. lossless doesnt mean no loss.. its like decaf.. doesnt mean no caffeine.. just means less
flac rules.. but its mac driven.. but i prefer that over say mp3.. id rather just have the raw wav. but hell if that will happen
for standard people most will not tell mp3 vs lossless..
for us bone pickers we know the diff.. esp in editing.. you cant edit an mp3 (you can try but.. you will fail vs editing a lossless format)
