Spinner was invited to the Los Angeles offices of Epitaph Records to meet with Brett Gurewitz for an exclusive video interview.
Photo by Kristin Burns for AOL
http://www.spinner.com/2010/08/19/bad-religion-anniversary-epitaph-tour-video/
In the videos Brett talks about the beginning of Bad Religion, The Dissent Of Man, but also gives a tour in and around the Epitaph office in LA. In summary (and specifically related to Bad Religion):
Extra tidbit - This is not the first time Mike Campbell has done a guest appearance on a Bad Religion record. Mike also did a guitar solo on 'Los Angeles is Burning'.
I think I'm gonna like all the Greg songs on the new album, and like 1/3 - 2/3 of the Brett songs. I do like TDiS, but I'm a little wary of "spirituality" coming out in his songs. Though I have to concede, Generator is possibly the best song Brett Gurewitz ever wrote, and it just oozes spirituality.
I wouldn't hold my breath in regards to a leak....NMOH leaked about 3 weeks before release and I think these days they can keep an even tighter lid on things. I'm guessing earliest= 3 weeks in advance....latest= 5 days in advance.

Brett (if you're around), I was just wondering, whilst making a BR record, do you ever use Autotune, either to correct notes or as part of a suite of production tools?
What's your view on vocal correction software? Cheers 08/23/2010 at 05:58

I don't think it sounds anything like Springsteen...but, the again, it's probably due to Greg's vocals- you can do all you want but Greg's voice is so distinct and recognizable it will always sound like Bad Religion to me. That being said, the influence doesn't surprise me...Brett has stated numerous times in the past his wide array of influences. I don't see it as a big departure though...I think the biggest "musical" departure Bad Religion have done (not counting ITU) would be "Boot Stamping...." from TESF, which I thought turned out amazing...but definitely different than anything else they'd done before. "The Defense" would be another good example of experimentation that works. Actually, the only experimentation I haven't particularly cared for was the distortion on Greg's vocals during "Murder" and "52 Seconds"...the songs are still great, but I think they would have been way stronger with a clear Greg vocal. Here's to hoping the first track (bound to be a fast one) on the new record isn't distorted...although it won't be a deal breaker by any means.

I think in terms of songwriting, its sounds like its going to be like Stranger Than Fiction. Which excites me because personally I think
its their best record as far as the writing goes. Its also the first album of Bad Religions that I listened to back in '94 in 9th grade! Cant wait to hear the whole album 08/22/2010 at 15:40

I must admit I'm getting pretty big expectation to the new record.
Awesome! Brings back memories of when I was in Hollywood and persuaded my girlfriend to drive all the way down Sunset Blvd to try and find Epitaph Records. All we saw to prove it was was an 'Epitaph' logo in one of the windows, so it was cool to see what it was like inside!
Haha yeah I spent a LOT of time in traffic driving all the way over to see the building. Didn't see much more than the (gated) parking lot and the exterior of the building, and there was no signage to indicate that it was even the right place. Totally different from the massive Scientology campus a few miles west on Sunset :) 08/20/2010 at 13:32

So it wasn't accidental that Devil in Stiches had so much 70s/80s mainstream rock influence, particularly Tom Petty

LOL, I admire your creativity to come up with completely new ways to put the word "anesthesia" in a sentence :D 08/20/2010 at 02:17

And once again an interview that doles out clues that keep confirming my gloomy suspicions and wildest fears about this album, which I've had ever since the day they walked into the studio...

Cool interview.
Emily I'm actually impressed that you thought that the devil in stitches sounded like a Springstein song ! BTW just discovered the stuff you've put on youtube. Most of the stuff sounds really good ! 08/19/2010 at 19:37

Yeah, I thought about that as well, pretty sure it was Emely (you lost a few points in my book for not liking The Boss, sorry. You still make great music though!) Interesting interview, both more serious stuff about the album and a little more lighthearted showing us the office :) 08/19/2010 at 14:52
