Update: A better quality of this song can now also be found on Soundcloud.
About a month ago we first reported about a new song from Bad Religion's upcoming album The Dissent of Man. The song - The Devil In Stitches - first appeared on KROQ and within the same day Brett posted the song on SoundCloud. Of course we've already heard two other songs of the new album: Won't Somebody and The Resist Stance that both were recorded for the 30 Years Live album. The album version of the latter appeared today on Bad Religion's MySpace (yes it still exists!)
Don't hesitate to let your opinion be heard in the comments below or in our forum. Check out the lyrics to The Resist Stance in the Discography.

I don't know why, but for some reason, hearing Greg sing this high is freaking AWESOME.
I cannot fucking wait for this album! Ship the pre-orders already! 09/20/2010 at 06:27

What the hell is everyone's deal? Every album since The Gray Race has had high production. Why is this album being singled out?

So these days people spend twice the time analyzing the production of a BR song than the actual message? These are sad times indeed. The reason I fell in love with No Control was because it was fast, melodic and had something to say about us. The Resist Stance isn't as perfect but close enough and its awesome for those same reasons. Not because of the production.

Sure, there are a lot of people on this planet who know a lot more about audio mastering than I do, but that doesn't mean I'm not right about the song being somewhat overcompressed. I use ProTools on a daily basis for audio designing, for mixing bands, mastering audio, etc. and I can just imagine someone standing there in the studio (Brett, Joe Baresi, whoever) yelling "IT HAS TO BE LOUDER, MORE IN YOUR FAAAAACE". Well okay, let's slide this threshold down a little, limit this, compress that.. with this soundquality as a result.
It's not as bad as New Maps though. 09/08/2010 at 08:50

The Davis' are completely correct. I cannot fucking stand you fuck-o's out there who pick these songs apart to the extent that you don't even like them anymore; from "music theory" to the "deconstruction" of the lyrics or musical arrangement. It's fuckin ridiculous. TRS is a song, totally in BR fashion, that yeah, may have a "particular" sound due to production "variation" in comparison to what has been released prior, but REALLY... you are all BR fans and all understand that the band has evolved (both as people and musicians) in many different ways over the past 3 decades. It's completely fucking heinous to try and argue about half of this shit. "Overmodualted?" WHAT?!? OK, right, we get it, but fuckin' come on! I've listened to the song now on surround sound, in my head-phones, and over just regular, old computer speakers, and have noticed the things you people are talking about. BUT, at the same time it strikes me as unnecessarily belligerent, the way some of you exchange these bedatable topics. TRS is VERY Bad Religion; we all saw it LIVE on youtube and there were hardly any complaints. BIG FUCKING DEAL if the studio version has been produced in that particular fashion... still sounds like BR to me, and FUCKING AWESOME! Quit arguing about pointless shit, grow up, and have your completely unnecessary debates elsewhere cause you come off as a FUCK when you do. 09/07/2010 at 00:20

1) You've heard 2 songs, 50% of which you are very happy with the production...so the album is ruined? Perhaps TRS is the anomaly on the record? It's impossible to know. 2) Can you give me a specific time when you hear crackling? I just listened closely trying to hear it and think I may have spotted a couple instances, but honestly, I had trouble picking anything out while specifically trying to hear it.... 09/06/2010 at 15:18

I was so pleased with the production/sound on Devil In Stitches, everything fell right into place. The drums sounded awesome, no overmodulation, no 9 layer guitar tracks Listen to the drums on the Resist Stance and you'll hear crackling and overmodulation all over the place whenever it gets a little bit heavy and bassy.. I looked at both waveforms and Devil In Stitches seems to have a lot more dynamic, yet Resist Stance is compressed and limited to shit. It sounds fresh now because it's a new song, but I'm sure a lot people will grow to hate it after listening closely on some high-end speakers or a headphone." Dude. Stop.
I love the song, but after listening to this Soundcloud higher bitrate version, I'm really worried about all the crackling I hear whenever the drumming get a little bit heavy. So, once again, this is either a shitty mastering job or a problem with Soundcloud. But considering the fact Devil In Stitches sounded fine.. it's probably another side effect of too much dynamic compression. And yes, I do know what I'm talking about. I do professional audio designing for radio stations and too much compression shit will do that to music.
Right, possibly. But you don't really know what you're saying. It's the hip thing, to know about loudness wars. It's buzz words and its simple to bring up. But noise can and is introduced at every stage of the process. That said, I really haven't listened for this particular noise you're talking about, but this is clearly a low quality file and that compression of data size alone could cause the sound you're talking about. I can't believe that they heard the music in full quality and ignored any crackling or other random sounds. 09/03/2010 at 11:12

It's definately a very slight simularity, one that i wouldn't even notice if you didn't say it. Just a simular rythm for a very tiny part, but not even the same. All songs would be rip offs if that was. Btw new Against Me sucks. And don't get me started, i still remember you denying the endless offspring rip-offs, deny the reality then?:P. 09/02/2010 at 02:22

Yes, because Bad Religion recorded a song, sped it up, and then put it on their Myspace.
Well...yes. I'm assuming after the final mix the song was sped up a bit. (i know that the 'remastered' track's pinches were a bit skewed too) If you listen to the first note, F, it is slightly sharp. Granted, BR could be playing out of tune, but i'd say that's unlikely. I've gone and stretched the waveform if you'd like to listen. It ends up being around 2:36. http://www.mediafire.com/file/xrzs1g2ef5t8bs6/The_Resist_Stance-Pitch-Down.mp3 08/31/2010 at 08:09

Yeah, they've tuned down half a step live since the mid-nineteen nineties(with a few exceptions). It's just easier on Graffin's voice during the course of a whole tour I suppose 08/31/2010 at 05:41

I agree with you mike! people are not paying attention. It's been said a hundred times that tune their guitars in Eb when they play live. I also agree it is clear that Brian does the solo. But on hetson and brett solos it's a bit harder to tell who plays it I think. I also think that deaf people would have problems with hearing who's playing a solo or even what band is playing. Also, when I was a young child I didn't notice that Strawberry Field from the Beatles was slowed down, so I don't think a child will immediatly know

p.s.: Just to make sure rookies here don't misunderstand: Yes, as a few people who knew what they were talking about said, this song is recorded in a higher key (as pretty much ANY BR song is), but by "not pitched up" I meant "not artificially pitched up". Greetings from Europe

Are there only rookies here who have NO clue about music whatsoever??? NO, the song was definitely not sped and pitched up, and that slowed down version is just that, SLOWED DOWN (and any child could hear that the very moment the voice sets in!). They simply recorded the song faster, what's the problem??? All these misguided assumptions are almost as ignorant as those who seriously claimed that the solo sounded "Hetsonish" or "Brettish", while even a deaf person would hear from the first note on that this is Baker (same with the the one on Devil in Stitches, which was so clearly Hetson, and people said it was Brett). Many comments on this website (on multiple threads) make me wonder if most people here have actually listened to a Bad Religion album previously...

the song really awesome, couldn't be best.
but hey, i dont think it's sped up, i don't think they would upload a song premiere to myspace and not listen to it to check if it's ok. probably the change in pitch you expect is because BR plays half a tone down live, so we're used to hear this song one semitone lower. 08/30/2010 at 21:41

I'd say it's backing vocals. The "Ooooh" tracks fade into the "Ahhhh" tracks. There might be some feedback from a guitar as well.

Is it back vocals or some kind of synthesizer we can hear at like 1:00 and 2:03. It's starting low and growing. I'm so reassured by this song. Come on new album, leak! 08/30/2010 at 20:26

The intro sounds a bit faster-paced than I expected/like, so that throws me off a bit. And the drums seem a little washed out.
But hey, everyone's a critic. And I know this is the Myspace-upload version. Other than that, sounds pretty good. 08/30/2010 at 17:21

From the first back up vocals you hear, at around 0:35 count from 1 to 5 and surely another back up vocal will surprisingly come in. Yes, roughly about every 5 to 10 seconds in the song is a back up vocal/oozin ahh. Pretty scary when you see how little back up vocals were in the 30 years live version.
You WILL most likely laugh to yourself while you count the pauses in between oozin aahs. 08/30/2010 at 17:20

The song is kinda cool....
No seriously, this is fucking good. I like the live version a lot too, so I expected the studio version to be a bit boring, since it's played without the adrenaline and so on. But this rocks. The guitars sound great. The only moment I findd a bit odd is the end of the intro when the solo guitar stops and Greg sets in. All sounds a bit thin-ish for a moment. But great song, really. 08/30/2010 at 15:56

Yeah, I feel like the song sounds like it's being played in fast forward...like if you turn the speed up on a record player. It has thrown Greg's voice WAY off and to me barely even sounds like him. I didn't much care for the live version, and sadly, I can't say this is any better. Bummer.
That said, I love TDIS and Won't Somebody. Stoked for the new record. 08/30/2010 at 15:14

I'm surprised to see so many Devil In Stitches haters.. I actually thought that song sounded a lot better and more fresh than the live version of Resist Stance, which gave me a somewhat dull impression in a "let's make a fast song, yell some shit and we're done" kind of way and that's something I take back a 100% after listening to the studio version.
The studio version sounds a LOT better. It really gives you the opportunity to really listen to the small nuances in the song. It seems the production team traded their "HOLY SHIT LETS COMPRESS EVERYTHING TO HELL, IT WILL SOUND REALLY NICE AND LOUD AND MUFFLED" attitude for an auto-tune plugin, but whatever. Only thing that bothers me and which is something I have to agree on with a lot of other people here, is the overkill over the famous oozing aahs. Believe me when I say I LOVE that stuff, but listening to New Maps of Hell from start to finish these days is such a chore. By the time you get to Scrutiny you've heard so many pitch perfect AAAHHs, songs like the Grand Delusion are starting to get on your nerves. You know, I wouldn't actually mind it if they somewhat tried to reproduce that sound live. When you watch some old videos from a year like 1993, they really nailed the live sound mix so you could hear Brett doing the backup vocals on a song like American Jesus. I'm really baffled when I go to a Bad Religion show (like this year in Amsterdam and London) and you just can't hear Jay. I'll be standing there thinking "it's 2010 and the guy behind the board still doesn't know Jay actually sings backup vocals on Social Suicide?". The REAL live version of New Dark Ages doesn't even come close to the recording on 30 Years Live. They did so many overdubs in post-production to make it sound like the record and for some reason Social Suicide didn't get that deluxe treatment on the live record and still sounds like shit. Anyway, I'm rambling on and on.. getting back to the point I was trying to make.. Let the oozing aahs fly, but at least try to reproduce it live. 08/30/2010 at 15:06

they tune their guitars down one half live, so it was in e then
but now its in F, one half step higher, That most likely what makes it sound so high ( I've played along with it In f and it sounded fine) 08/30/2010 at 14:19

I think this version is sped up...isn't it?
It sounds timestretched/pitched at a higher note to me. Maybe something to do with the myspace encoding? 08/30/2010 at 14:15

It's great! And I agree that seeing it live didn't do it justice.
Does this remind anyone else of New America type sound? It's awesome to hear some of that style again! 08/30/2010 at 13:39

OH - MY - SANTA CLAUSE!!! This is so much better than I had expected in every possible way!!! I mean, even the sound is amazing, even the drums that sounded so shitty on The Devil in Stitches! These may easily be among the best, if not even THE best, drums they have ever had (in terms of sound and production). The song sounded mediocre live and on the live album, but they really managed to elevate it to an incredible studio song. And this after that shitty first new song... wow, I'm refreshed and amazed and maybe a tiny bit more hopeful about this album than I was for the last 6 months...

Holy shit, this sounds amazing! I was kind of getting bored with the live version from the 30 Years Live album, but damn, this has re-ignited my love for the song.
I absolutely LOVE the bass in this song. 08/30/2010 at 13:25

Sorry, and forgot to ad for the "voice" criticizers...
This is a heavily compressed version on myspace. Remember the initial concerns over the mix for NMoH when Heroes and Martyrs was leaked, but it ended up being an iTunes issue. I can agree with what you are saying, but I think we ought to reserve judgement until a proper quality version is released. 08/30/2010 at 12:54

Holy shit! Never really liked the live version but this one kicks ass! It's nice that things go like this and studio versions actually sound more energetic than the live versions every now and then. It's like there are guitar tracks and gang vocals everywhere. Madness. Makes Devil In Stiches sound really boring.

Music is more like it or what I was hoping before. But yeah, Greg's voice sounds like he is purposely making it sound higher. Nothing wrong with some change, just I didn't expect it that is for sure.

After listening to the song 3 times, I must admit that I am disappointed of how Greg's voice sounds ... I do not think it sounds good actually ... Might just be the crappy earphone I have at work ...

I am Resisting Stance.
Or I'll just wait for Graffin to come to this site and tell me to listen to the song just like Brett told me to do with the Devil in Stitches. But until then, or until I get the vinyl in the mail, I must not listen to this. 08/30/2010 at 12:13

Well, I loved the studio version of Resist Stance but I do confess I was excepting a little more of Graffin´s voice. It didn´t sound as good as in "Devil in Stitches". Sorry guys, it´s just my opinion.
