The band already mentioned earlier that there would be a video for the song True North. Well, today it's here. But you can also check it out on rollingstone.com.
The video has been directed by Zach Merck, who also directed the Live At the Palladium video in 2006.
As Zach Merck explains "I wanted the video to simply capture a feeling that every single one of us has had throughout our years. This is a band that has directly influenced generation after generation of punk rockers, and punk music in its truest form is something that we have and understand that the masses never will. There is something very special and personal about discovering the music on a new album, especially with Bad Religion, so that's what this video concept became – that intense private moment that happens to all of us….alone with our music, inspired by the lyrics...us against the world."
when you "disagree" with a face, or a cell phone, or you try to define what punks should look and act like... then you tread the same tired ground that every ass kissing maximum rock and roll kid did... and all that got was a bunch of elitist fucktards telling everyone how to act. i don't care if you don't like the video, it's just a video. everyone can complain about whatever they want, but don't think that judging people for their looks, or their phone, or anything about their personality doesn't make you a shallow, judgmental asshole.
I think the problem many people are having is that while the purpose of the video obviously is to capture the feeling of a lonesome teenager ("alone with our music, inspired by the lyrics...us against the world") listenting to records on his own, at the same time he looks like the popular dude, a the guy who gets all the girls, has an expensive phone and so on. Someone most of us probably couldn't relate to.
Of course, you could always argue that it's shallow to judge people by their looks, but isn't that kind of the purpose with a two-minute video? There's no time for a decent back story. We can't hear him talk. If we're going to discuss the video, we have to be shallow.
You will all be in for a big big surprise when you soon find out that in fact this video is merely the FIRST of 16 (SIXTEEN!) chapters!!! Right, Jay? Right, right, right?!?! ;-/
That's right. As I had previously suggested to Brett via Twitter, it's going to be one story told in 16 videos, one for each song on the album. Soon to follow is Past Is Dead, our character going over old photos from two or three years ago back when he was into Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. But the Past Is Dead, now he's a punk rocker!
And of course Fuck You is gonna have the main character watching the video of True North on the Internet and then visiting TheBRPage and reading the comments on this very same news story and saying Fuck You to all of us!
I agree with HomerSapien. I love the cinematography and asthetics but I just wish they had put more thought into the 'script'...
THEY ALREADY SAID THEY WERE REMAKING TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET.

I should also mention that this is far from being their worst video, and I am genuinely happy that they chose to take this is in a different direction. I enjoyed the cinematography of it, I enjoyed the asthetics (or mise-en-scene if you wanna be a snob about it), and I'm quite interested to see what will be the next offering from both the band and Zach Merck. It was a risk that unfortunately I don't think paid off, but keep going and explore further!

So, uh. I just want to iterate that I don't like the video not because of the way the kid looks or whatever all of the idiots are judging it on, but because I just don't think it's a compelling video.
I don't like the video because, well, nothing really happens. I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND THE INTENT OF THE VIDEO as it's trying to capture what we all have and will continue to experience when listening to an awesome song. We bob our head, we air drum, we think and plan, and then we start our day. It inspires us to do what we need to do. Cool! However, I just don't want to nor need to see that in a video. Those experiences are quite personal to us and differ amongst everybody. Maybe this video captured someone's personal experience perfectly, but it just didn't capture mine. I also get that it's supposed to make us ask questions like "Where is this kid going when he leaves?"; "What's he thinking?"; "Who is he texting?" For that, I applaud the video. I always love a film that provides little to no backstory to a situation, and this did it flawlessly.
This is also where I think it's a missed opportunity, however, and also why most people do not like the video. There is nothing at stake, here. There's no beginning, there's no end, just the middle. It is just a looking glass portrait of what we believe to be a young kid listening to this track. This is most likely the intentions behind the video and it is achieved, but I just don't find it interesting enough. It could've brought more to the table, and maybe told a subtle story, or even added some sort of desparation to the kid's life which I'm sure most listeners of Bad Religion have and will continue to experience in their own lives.
Anyway, that's my take on it. I'm writing this off of the top of my head so maybe some things don't make sense or some ideas aren't completely fleshed out, but hopefully this sheds more light on why some people don't like the video as opposed to the comments like "OMG JUSTIN BIEBER LOL".
Also, I own a Blackberry #woops #sorry #guessimnotapunk
Good production quality, albeit very off-the-cuff. I think Bad Religion's message-heavy lyrics are inherently a difficult match for a music video. I take it some of you remember that film student who made a video for "who we are" years ago. That was just a school assignment and it was better than any video BR ever put out.
In fact, IMO it was a really dam good effort that managed to fit the song really well. Not sure if it matched the lyrical content but either way it was a great effort.

Can't believe what a little bitch fest some of you are having about this video.
Also, I thought the Justin Bieber-look-alike comments were a bit of a stretch at first, but then I did a Google image search. They are quite similar... haha! But you are all kidding yourselves if you don't think there are plenty of teenage punk who show up to BR shows who look more or less like this kid.
I would ask, "Are you not entertained!?" but who really fucking cares? Go watch some other videos and move on if you didn't like this one.

i actually like the video. it reminds me of myself when i was 16 and needed to hear just a couple of br songs before I went to school. they could have done more creative stuff like have greg graffin play the boy's dad who is arguing with him and sends him to his room..then the video like it is now..and we see him leaving the house and on the way to school or work there are some other BR members on the street or something

I think it's interesting that the fans give Bad Religion so much props and accolades for "doing their own thing" for 30 years, but as soon as they do their own thing and put out the video that THEY want to put out, it's "Waaaaah you guys put out a shit video, you should have done this blah blah should have done that blah blah".

Wow people are going a bit deep and meaningful over this aren't they lol. Got to love the "meaning of being punk" crap. I don't even think I am a punk. I just love Bad Religion and some other punk bands. Anyway, back to the video.... Lets face it folks, its not good. No biggy though, their videos are never good. Would be nice it they made a bit of effort with one but I am not losing sleep over it, as long as the quality of music stays the same then I will be happy.

Wow! It's a video. It nailed the idea of punk being a solitary kind of pursuit for some of us. Who cares what the kid looks like. My only complaint is that it's boring ...

I think that, amongst things that make us better persons, one is trying not to be judgmental. It may sometimes be hard, but in they end, when we finally succeed, it makes us better.
Punk-rock was one of the thing that taught me how to never judge someone based on his look or a feeling I have.... it also taught me how to let other people live their life the way they want it. Interestingly, I think True North is exactly about that, so if this video makes us talk that much about it, then it's mission accomplished, as Jay said...
Gosh it's so great being a BR fan ! How many fans can say they discuss the meaning of a video clip with a founding member of the said-band ? only us :D

but jay, i think what many people in here are expressing is that this was an opportunity to continue to show the world (on perhaps an even larger scale given the success of the record) that truly being punk has nothing to do with carrying off the traditional aesthetic we associate with the scene. the video doesn't take the conversation forward; it recycles the same imagery, that of a homogenuous punk look, one that it always seemed to me was what was so great about br and its fanbase. this is a substantive band. in a way i take pride in the fact that graffin looks like a middle aged professorial couch potato rather than a cliche'd spikey haired punk. i always brag about this fact to my friends, about how my favorite band is ALL SUBSTANCE and doesn't adulterate its message by placing importance on traditional punk imagery.
i hope to god i never try to show the world what "true punk rock " is...
END OF DISCUSSION -CLOSED-
Honestly , I think the video totally embodies the meaning of the song .
I actually agree, everyone has their nit-picks, Im no different, but over-all I felt it embodied a very farmiliar feeling that I had within myself, everytime I sat down with a new pennywise or bad religion record when I was younger, but even to this day.... aside from the trivial nonsense like what the kid was wearing etc.... when you hear an awesome song like True North, and you read the lyrics, you get hyped, it is motivating.

Punk is an attitude. An attitude is a feeling or a stance towards something. That in turn is experienced as arrogance or prejudicm to others by nature, while it is natural and the "right" cause for the "punker". In light of this you could conclude that the attitude of all of us in here and Bad Religion for that matter, is inavoidably judgmental in its shape.

That is of, course, to ignore how a punk who criticizes something/anything is already-interpellated into hegemony. The whole 'Justin Bieber gay' crap that's cropped up once or twice isn't speaking from some de-centred, impartial or anarchical perspective, but from the very perspective of the prevailing homophobic, phallogocentric regime.
This is why the song "fuck you" is partially a critique of a 'pavlovian' form of rebellion - something we are all conditioned by rather than something to which we achieve formal emancipation. "It takes no form at all."
But whatever, that kid is such a faaaaggoooott

Punk's can criticize or disagree with anything, that's the basis of the anarchy of it. That is indeed the beauty of it. The anarchy of the thought process. But judgement on the surface is far from anarchy, and in my opinion, "judging a book by it's cover" is far from the punk rock mindset. Thats just popular opinion, based on what you have seen and heard, and last time I checked since I was 9, now im (holy shit im 27 im getting old!) 27 , that's not so punk rock. Look at Greg, if you had never hear of him or seen him before and you met him in a grocery store, would you sit there and think, hey, that guy is a punker......

It's not like other bad religion videos. But I think it's funny that the guy kind of looks like justin bieber : )
Better idea for this video:
They could have had the band playing in an arctic desert with old-timey "punk" geologists (a-la steam punk style) on an expedition to find "true north" but in the end they are curious to discover all the band members frozen in place, "mid-performance".
Common, as I said on forum, what's the problem with the style of the kid ?
For people claiming open-minds, punk spirit etc, you're pretty close-minded. They are a lot of guys dressing up like him, or mohawk, spikes whatever, and lots who don't. This is why we're supposed to like punk. They are a lot of different people at a BR show, maybe it varies depending of location, but that is great.
I don't care someone buy his clothes at Hot Topic or Payless or Gucci. If he listens to punk, BR or old-school basic hardcore and smaller bands, and goes to shows, do something DYI, support the artists by buying records etc, and call himself for this reason, or even another, a "punk", then it's punk.
This video is nice ( not the best I've seen tough) it's arty in the good sense, the song is awesome and that's it.
You have some good points. But punk is not an excuse for accepting stereotyped commercial cliches.

Look I didnt like the video either, but I didn't want to delve into the symbolic message of why I think they portrayed that kid with Crosses as earing etc. etc. I was totally Christian when I got into bad religion, but simultaneously became fascinated with science at the same time as bad religion pennywise nofx, descendants casualties, tsol, naked aggression, oxymoron, litmus gree, Bad religion was the only band that inspired me to thoroughly question my worldview though, and the validity of it. That had a positive impact on my life altogether. (im still a fuck up, kinda, i hold my own and all but im kinda still just kinda sorta fucked up- four loko) but the video wasnt that bad.... it wasnt what i was expecting, but then again, bad religion's song titles alone end up shattering my expectations once i hear the songs, which actually kinda makes it all that much better.
acceptance and open-mindedness is great and all, but if i ever see some dude wearing gucci at a br show i might die of laughter
Actaully the handcraft of Gucci is a better way to support anti-exploation than your normal brands. They have the exclsivness to carry so they usually manufactur their products locally and thir more luxury lines hand made. All of this generates the avoidance of using humans as slaves in poorer countries unlike how the cheaper brands do.
Remember the video for Los Angeles is Burning? Or for American Jesus? Hell, even Sorrow? Actually, I think Bad Religion lost their way music video-wise at Wrong Way Kids (even Honest Goodbye had the band in it). As much as I LOVE Bad Religion, I feel like as much effort, imagination, creativity and personality as they put into their music, they put that much less effort into the videos which is a shame. These could be killer, but alas...
But Wrong Way Kids is an excellent video.
In the first 20 seconds or so of the video, I was like "WTF is this?" ... but as it progressed I realized that this is actually an incredible video, because it captures the significance of music to punks (and anyone, really) who often listen to it alone, privately, to pump themselves up before facing the world outside. I know this has been how I've often listened to bad religion... before going out to a show or even to work or school. Just rocking out to one song real quick to get the blood flowing. Great stuff, guys... I hope we get to see at least one other video from this album too!
This. I like how the last couple of videos have been all about the fans.

Simian got the best explanation if you want to convince yourself that it's a good video...
But the thing is, no Bad Religion fan looks like this. Never saw a guy like this at a BR show... So it's hard for us to relate to that cliche punk guy. Looks like they were targetting an audience of 13 years old little wanabe punks...
I think the quality of the video is not bad though. They could've made a good video with the same kind of shooting and black and white stuff.

EDIT: I posted my thoughts before reading any of yours. Wow, what a bunch of debbie downers. I stand by my opinion.

Did anyone else feel like this video wasn't edited for the song? For a fast paced and energetic song, the slow paced editing didn't do it justice. It basically looks like someone threw random video clips on top of the music bed.

delirium~ ... start cropping out those flyer images for the tours/shows section!
Perhaps maybe the kid is a caricature of what a punk is today and the whole "civil war re-enactment" comment made by Brett? (flyers of old shows he was not at, kid stuffing bandana in pocket - which no one does today.. i.e. finding 'true north' i e finding one's identity or something) Possibly the one way i can see this as being effective commentary.
I think the idea of watching a bad religion video of someone listening to a bad religion song is weird, unless that was intentional. It's like watching a movie of someone watching something on Netflix.
In any event, the Hot Topic kids will love this.
Edit: Upon reading Watcho!'s take on the video, yeah i can understand the simplicity of whats being said. Not bad for a low budget video.

It's not THAT bad. And I hate most BR videos... Aesthetically it's the best video they've put out. And I like the idea of a simple theme, but maybe the outcome could have been better.

I always felt that, Bad Religion always gave me the idea that I do not need to dress like a punk, get tattoos and colored hair to be punk, simply be the way I want to be. And this boy like Justin Bieber seems anything, but not a fan of Bad Religion

It looks like there could be another video starting when the guy gets out in the street. Don't know what song they could take, maybe Past is dead, or Detp. And it would be the 2nd part of that video.
Like Green Day did with Broken Dreams and Holiday...
But yeah, not great at all. It's been a while since there was a good video with the guys playing. Honest Goodbye don't count imo. Broken was not too bad, better than the cheesy one for Sorrow.

That's the most awful video I've ever seen. A poseur kid sitting in his bedroom? This song is epic and deserves a much better video! Maybe I'll make a fan edit... WTF. I can't believe someone was paid for this.
It's not even cut to the beat of the song. How did this shit get approved?

It actually looks more like a commercial for the album and BR merch than a videoclip for the song. Not cool.

Kinda reminded me the Bastards of Young video, but the Replacements' one is a lot better.

It's embedded by means of some crappy Rolling Stone player. When it pops up on youtube we'll embed that one.

What kind of crap is this shit?? I was expecting a bit more for a video of the new album.. maybe the band playing in the background or any other kind of shit... but this? just only a stupid teenage punk boy in his bedroom?
I could have filmed a better video than this one with only a webcam at home...
FAIL!

Oh, ya. Something that makes you feel old.
Haven't "looked" like a punker in almost 15 years. (Here comes the obligatory "back in my day" comment).
But punk kids have iPhones now, huh? Makes sense, but something I hadn't considered. Back in my day....if I would have had an iPhone, I might have been called a poseur or a spoiled rich kid. Truly interesting how times have changed.

That was kind of the worst video. Ever. Lol.
Kept waiting for something to happen, only it didn't. Oh well, at least I got to hear the song.

God that was truly horrific. Why? Just why? Could they not be bothered to do anything themselves for it?

I haven't watched it yet, but I'd like to say I agree with everything the last guy said.

Well, at least it probably didn't cost much to make. And that's all I have to say about that.

That was the worst thing I've ever seen. Who was that angsty shit, and why are they affiliating him with BR?
A simple video of the band playing would suffice, Brett, or whichever record company stiff commissioned this atrocity.
Also, is that a sticker of Obama the drone bomber at the end? Hopefully not, I don't think I have the capacity to hate it any more than I already do.
