As no official announcement has been made yet from the band, I've been a bit hesitant writing about it. However, as the information can already be found on the internet (thanks Google Alert!), let's get this over with.
It seems that a book is being worked on called "We’re Not Bad Religion". It's written by/with Jim Ruland and is, as the publisher says, a “hybrid oral history” of the band. The book, which is set for fall 2019 and will chart the group’s history, from its “humble beginning” as a collection of “pissed-off teenagers in a sweltering garage in the San Fernando Valley to headlining the world’s biggest concert venues.” The book will also explore the band’s “unrelenting critical stance on religion and social issues with politically charged lyrics embodied by vocalist Greg Graffin’s other career as a lecturer at UCLA and Cornell University.”
Jim also wrote a book with Keith Morris about his life and according to him, the Bad Religion book has been a much bigger challenge dealing with all the personalities and perspectives.
Having been in contact with Jim Ruland, I was happy to learn that TheBRPage - in particular The Answer and the Media sections - has been very helpfull to him in filling in the gaps in his knowledge.
@toppcat,
I've asked Jack about those tapes almost exactly 10 years ago. In the end it was Graffin's decision to seek a big established publisher instead of his Polypterus imprint. As the book would then have to be much different for a more commercial publisher with a more general audience, Jack stopped writing. No publisher bit on it.
Jack considers Graffin the rightful owner of the tapes; after all, he got paid for the work he had done. So far Greg prefers the tapes not to be made public. Logically, of course, as they're all pretty out of date now and much has changed with the band since that No Substance-recording era.
Anyway, Jim is aware of the work Jack has done... But I doubt if any of it is being used for the new book.
Hi Marty-I've been in contact with Jack about this --we have stayed in touch after all these years-- and we are of the same opinion, as is Jim, with whom I have now corresponded, about Greg G. giving the high sign. We are keeping the circle of trust intact as it were.
It's funny, that was all done at a point the band was half as old as it is now! There's a lot about origins, the LA punk scene and influences in the interviews so that stuff is essentially unaffected by the passage of time (and more accurate being from 20 years closer to the beginning). There's 30 long transcripts (I am missing one I think, only have 29) from Jack's taped interviews and they are extremely detailed and precise in the questioning and quite expansive in the responses.
Roger and I also worked hard on discography info for the originally intended book, in fact that was our main purpose, but that stuff is all easily seen on the internet now-another effect of two decades whizzing by!
I'm glad their story is finally being told in book form-very much looking forward to the finished product, Jim's Keith Morris tome was fab.

I should probably make contact with him, I have the transcripts of most if not all the interviews Jack Rabid did with the band in the late 90's when Roger Vulture and I were doing research for him on a band sponsored book that ultimately was scrapped. Jack had enough material to do the whole book as there were dozens of hours of interviews; knowing hi me probably still has the original tapes. He even got time in with Tim Gallegos and I remember calling up and talking to Jay Z. about about his time in the band sort of questionnaire style. This was all round the NS era and the taping of the HBO Reverb show and Jack also managed to get Brett on tape. I've reached out to Jack as well as we had a ton of stuff covering every aspect of the band up until that point, including a decent amount on the Quarks and a couple other predecessor bands, that really should be looked at as it was 20 years closer to those events.
Thanks for spoiling it!
I should have added: "... or so the story goes.."
I, for one, can't wait to read about the story behind why Mike has (or had?) such great difficulty playing the first notes of Fuck Armageddon correctly.

the only thing im curious about is, i'll be honest, the whole story behind Hetson leaving. because that still hurts.
Short version: alcohol, prescription drugs, needed to get his shit together for a loooong time already, others got fed up, etc. Initially during his absence (of cleaning himself up) he thought he'd still return. And as we now know, Mike stayed on.
