Southern California punk legends in their own right and known for left-leaning politics and socially charged material, Bad Religion didn't make any election-year comments, which was somewhat surprising. Nonetheless, led by founding antsy singer Greg Graffin and guitarist Brett Gurewitz -- almost old coots of punk now -- the band was a juggernaut of rapid-fire material from their just-released album, "The Empire Strikes First." This included the racing anthem "Los Angeles Is Burning" as well as the older, melodically enriched '90s alt-hits that moved them from '80s hard-core to worthy inheritors of the Clash's mantle of conviction -- songs like "21st Century Digital Boy" and "Infected."

Bad Religion was a contrast to the greatly hyped new "supergroup" Velvet Revolver, whose image and overpowered, overgunned attack seemed antithetical to the everyman, regular guy look and style of most of the other bands all day. There's no denying this group has skill and sonic ammo to spare, but the vocals and even some guitar solos from ax hero Slash were buried in an almost metallic and muddy hard rock mix.

Another group from the 1980s, Bad Religion, also showed they haven't missed a step on stage or in the recording studio. Their songs, "Los Angeles is Burning" and "Sinister Rouge," from their new CD, "The Empire Strikes First," are as good as anything from the days of "Do What You Want." They performed all three.

And if Greg Graffin and company are avoiding becoming stale, members of still another band from that era, Cypress Hill, aren't letting age stifle their desire to indulge.
