"You included a few CDs from indie bands on your year's Top 10 list, including ones by Arcade Fire, Nick Cave & Paris Texas. (Great picks all.) What other albums from indie groups did you like in 2004? Did you care for the stuff put out by Franz Ferdinand or Fiery Furnaces or Blue Cathedral? What about Carl Newman or TV on the Radio? Iron & Wine or Bad Religion?"

"Hi Jamaal, and thanks for the great question (and the nice words, always welcome). Right now as I type this I'm listening to one of my fave indie bands from last year, The Burden Brothers (which also made my Top Ten), but otherwise I've been looking ahead to 2005 releases. So far I like Cass McCombs, The Frames and at least what I've heard of the new Bright Eyes double-disc. As to the bands you mention, Franz Ferdinand is fun, but I think they're overhyped. Ditto TV on the Radio. I think Bad Religion is making a rocky but sincere transition to being the elder statesmen of their genre. I'd need to go back and listen to the other acts to try and rustle up an impression. I get so many CDs that if the band doesn't do something -- good or bad -- that catches my ear straight off, I can't linger too long over it, waiting for something to happen".

i personally don't think BR's last two albums are their best work. Certainly not bad at all. It just doesn't move me the way some of the other stuff has. with that said, i'd really like to her elaborate exactly what she means there. it sounds a bit like BS. while i can't find as much of an emotional bond with the newer BR records, I still can't think of any band that's making better music nowadays.
