Sitting at work doing data entry can get kind of boring. As I was thinking about the upcoming Bad Religion show in Kitchener, I wanted this visit to my hometown to be something more. I was trying to think of a way to participate that was more than rubbing up against sweaty people in the mosh pit. A way that only a true fan of Bad Religion could ever really appreciate.

I?ve seen Bad Religion a few times and I know they like to get a guest to do the rap verse for ?Let Them Eat War?. In a recent interview Jay Bentley said he was doing the verse. I saw some potential here, I thought it would be a lot cooler to have a volunteer from the audience do the verse. But how could they be sure that a person would know the whole verse? That?s when it dawned on me to make a sign! A sign that said ?I know the rap verse to Let Them Eat War?. It was simple and effective. It gave them all the information they needed to clue in that I would go up on stage and risk making a giant ass out of myself in front of thousands of people and my all time favorite punk band. Still, I was willing to bet that if Jay Bentley read the sign, he would take this opportunity to add some spontaneity to the show.

So a couple of weeks pass and as I?m doing data entry, I have the two paragraphs that Sage Francis typed out on my computer also. I was saying it in my sleep I memorized it so well.

The day of the Bad Religion show finally comes and I?m starting to think ?Man, I don?t want to carry around a sign all night? but at ten to six before I left work to go to the show, I quickly threw together the infamous sign and was willing to suffer in the mosh pit to protect it.

I get to the show, meet up with some friends and make a bunch of new ones right off the bat because everyone kept asking about the sign. I strategically went to the left hand part of the stage where Jay was more likely to be. Since I thought he was the one doing the verse, he would have the most say in it.

I had to suffer to protect that sign during Protest the Hero and Anti-Flag. Protest was really fucking good and Anti-Flag did a great job of being Anti-Flag. So Bad Religion finally comes on and I managed to hold my position and keep the sign in one piece. After a few songs, of me pumping the sign in front of Jay, he finally notices! He kind of does a double take and then has a visible belly laugh. A song or two later Dr. Greg Graffin noticed it and the two had a few quick words together.

That?s when Greg says something along the lines of ?Does anyone want to have an American Idol competition? We could embarrass, I mean feature a person from Kitchener up here on stage.? Then Greg skillfully said ?We?re not playing that song yet but we?ll have you up later.? I had no idea what he meant by American Idol but I was stoked.

A few more songs pass and Greg Introduces that I will be having a rapping contest with Chris # 2 of Anti-Flag! (Which was pretty unexpected!) Greg asks my name and I scream ?JASON? and the he says ?Alright DJ Jason, get up here!?. I get up on stage and look out into the thousands of people. It felt good. So now I?m standing up on stage with my idol Greg Graffin. The only thing I can do is put my arm around him and say ?I love you Greg?. Greg probably felt pretty awkward and stuck to the show. I was brought to the side of the Stage with # 2. He was a really cool person about it and was just like ?Let?s just fire off every other verse as they come?. Then I suggested both rapping at the second part. Wow, I had only planned to just deadpan the verse by myself in my own kind of monotone style. Now I?m up there with one of the most prominent punk voices in the scene today. It really was a competition!

They start the song and finally our cue comes on. Instead of deadpanning the entire verse as I planned, now I had to try! I grabbed that mike and made it my bitch. It was then and then only that my inner punk voice came out for the first time. I fucking screamed and it sounded it awesome. Here is who said what:

Chris # 2 ? We?ve got to Kill ?em and eat ?em before they reach for their cheques

DJ Jason ? Squeeze some blue collars, make them bleed from their necks

Chris # 2 ? Seize a few dollars from the people who sweat

D J Jason ? Because it?s freedom or death and they won?t question it!

Then we both did the second half:

At a job site the boss is God-like, conditioned work horses park at a stoplight / seasoned vets with their feat in nets / a stones throw away form a rock fight / but not tonight. And then it led into ?Feed ?em death?

So then I walked off the stage and all my friends were freaking out and just generally being awesome about it. I then rammed my way into the pit and moshed to the rest of the show. I would also like to add that about 30 different strangers came up to me after and congratulated me about it. Big ups to those people! But most importantly thanks to Matt Tribe (At the time a total stranger) who had taken some pictures of the event and was good enough to e-mail them out to me afterwards!

The morale of the story is, NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A THROWN TOGETHER SIGN!
