GD sold out with american idiot? GD said that they grew up and realized there was more important things to whine about... they may not go as deep into politics as BR but they still make direct statements relating to current events "There's a flag wrapped around a score of men
A gag, a plastic bag on a monument". GD did almost the oppositte of sell out. listen to american idiot and it tells a story which anyone who has grown up with green day can relate to in the same way that people have related to their music in the past. Compare a song like Deadbeat Holiday with Jesus Of Suburbia and you will find a very similar message. GD hasnt changed their views on things they just argue them much more intelligently. people have to remember that both BR and GD arent writing music for you to listen to, they write what they believe and if you want to listen to it then fine, neither of them care about the fame GD is just more popular because a different crowd likes them for the wrong reasons.

and maybe bad religion are discouraging free speech by shutting down their official message board."throws spanner in works" i agree with albaholic 100%. what change have mainstream punk bands like bad religion or green day ever really made anyway? the only positive one is on a personal level for their fans. to outsiders punk looks like lame empty rebellion and is not taken seriously by other generations/scenes. bad religion are different to that because they offer unrivalled lyrical content. but still they only appeal to the intelligent punk rock fan. green day have done the right thing by adopting a more political stance because they have a wider number of individuals to appeal to, and to encourage not to be stupid. perhaps that will lead to a more aware generation of adults, at least of a marginal increase, and that is the best we can hope for. who cares where the money goes?! i dont give a flying fcuk if either BR or GD are financially renumerated for their artistic endeavours.

He can't go to a GD forum to post because their official, previously FREE of charge message board was shut down, a new one put in its place and they now charge $25 to let you use their boards. Green Day are exploiting the current anti-war sentiment for their own gain. It's not about a label, or whether they are punk or not. They relaunched their sagging career by marketing themselves to ansty teenagers. Go listen to American Idiot and you'll see. Insomniac was a great album, as was Warning, the latter showed their growth in songs like "Church on Sunday" only to turn around and churn out lines such as "Everyone Is So Full Of Shit!
Born and raised by hypocrites,
Hearts recycled but never saved,
From the cradle to the grave,
We are the kids of war and peace,
From Anaheim to the middle east" Those aren't the words of a singer who only a few years ago said he couldn't continue to write as if he was still a snot-nosed punk......

Before Dookie? What was the difference in their music or general tone between Kerplunk and Dookie?... or are we still hung up on the label thing?
I'm not gonna sit here and defend why Green Day is true punk or not because it honestly doesn't matter to me. I lump them in with "pop punk" based on the music sound alone and honestly don't care about the way the band chooses to carry itself outside of that. Punk or not, they're damn good tunes, incredible in concert, and they keep getting better every album. And I'd rather be listening to AI right now than arguing about it with the Guardians of Purist Punk on another great band's message board.

Green Day was a good band back in the days before Dookie. They were a good enough band for BR to take them on tour with them. However, I take offense when magazines like Alternative Press, and Spin label them "Political Punks"
They are no longer punk (this fact acknowledged by the band themselves) and they are certainly NOT political. Just because they throw in a few mild punches at the Bush-Cheney regime does not make their band political. I invite any of you who think otherwise to watch/read any of the post America Idiot interviews that the band has given, and when a specific question about their political views is asked, all you get basically boils down to "because Bush sucks" If Green Day are a Political Punk Band, then Crass must have been last years' American Idol winner.

It seems that I have made a mistake. In a post that I made earlier I confused Billy Joel ("She's Only A Woman", "Piano Man") with Billy J o e (Professional cocksucker). Before you jump down my throat (Don't get too turned on Albaholic) let me point out the obvious similarities; the catalyst for my mistake.
1. Billy Joel = gay
2. Billy Joe = gay
I pledge that I will do my best to no longer confuse Billy Joel with Billy Joe, or anyother gay singer with another.
Amen

Oh, and by the way... It's your head that I was referring to taking up space in, not anyone else on the BR page. Unless of course YOU were referring to the gimp that's permanently attatched to your cock, I think you misquoted me. But Obviously your not one for details or substance (Green Day fan).
"Yeah so I told my bandmates, lets jump on the bandwagon. We'll stop writing about meth and masterbation and start writing about politics. That will sell records."

hey albaholic and tom: you guys are right, i just went and listened to some green day and realised that they are an amazing band. i recognise how foolish and ignorant i must've been before and am now fully committed to being more open minded and less elitist in my tastes and arguments. i also apologise for thinking that i had taken so much space up inside your heads, because it is obvious that it is me who was actually annoyed about it, and you guys were just giving up some of your precious time to try and make me see sense. i know that it didn't really matter to you. boy, it is time for me to grow up!

Yeah, Green Day really doesn't go in as deep as BR does (I mean it's not like they really quote the most current events or anything) but Green Day got pegged as the face of the political countermovement simply because they're probably the biggest band in the world right now to come out against Bush. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty and some are far more aggressive. But for someone as popular as GD to get away with saying "Seig Heil to the President gasman" on MTV... that speaks more about the culture masses in America than it does about Green Day OR Bush.
And it's true that "Eat War" gets a lot more specific and goes deeper than "American Idiot", but the point of the latter song is simple and you don't need a PhD to make it: That a bunch of idiots have bought into and fueled the paranoia of the social climate and it's not hard to look at it and say "this is totally crazy".

Personally, and I am ignorant to most Green Day other than Insomniac and (insert radio hit), I believe some of the deal with Green Day is that they never really seemed to have an outspoken political message until now. BR made Let Them Eat War... a real answer to the crap happening in the world and GD comes along with 'American Idiot' and are heralded as the new face of political punk. Its a shitty anthem song with a title that is probably more of a turn off than anything else. BR has never not been political punk and its just sort of a shock to see GD placed above them in that category. GD can put me in a great mood... I don't need them to supplement my anti attitude... Thats why we've got BR.

Green Day are one of my fave bands of all time...B-J Armstrong is one of the finest song writers ever. If you feel the need to pigeon-hole yourself as hardcore or this or that then so be it, you are only missing out some of the best written songs of all time. GD's last album was an absolute masterpiece and they have consistently written catchy, tuneful songs, something bad religion haven't always sustained....oooo what did he just say?! oh no!

Damn, that really really sucks, because I live in Canada. Well, I guess I shouldn't say "sucks", but hey, atleast the DVD's coming out soon.
And on a side note: I think I actually saw the preformance from 83 that they're talking about. It was posted on YouTube.com awhile ago, and it was taking off (hmm, I wonder why?). I donno, could've just been another video...

Yeah, you know, because the true way to support a punk band is through capitalism.
I mean I'll buy the DVD but I don't care if others don't. I don't even know how much BR would care. Didn't the back cover of "80-85" promote pirating their own music?

Tom you made me laugh. I hope you were jocking. If not, you suck hard as a fan. If you were a real fan, you would be showing a little respect for the band that you like. And this respect can be shown by paying for cds and DVDs.
