The reason the DVD sounds so great starts and ends with the band. Their performances, their equipment, and their songs. The hardworking folks who captured the performance at the Palladium, and who mixed the 5.1 track, did a great job of not screwing up what the band offered. People have varying opinions about the BG vocals, but there is no doubt that Gaffins lead vocals are absolutely present and real, and right on. I actually "discovered" the band with this DVD. It/they are awesome.

Considering Greg's stance on fixing mistakes on Tested, I'd find it hard to believe that the vocals were doctored...a good, strategic mix seems more likely IMO. I'm not completely discounting the possibility, though.

Yea it is really good, but their editor sucked. They've got spots of video where there are things going on and you don't see what you're hearing on stage (people singing but no one holding a mic up to their mouth, people playing things different from what they are actually playing on video) and those quick shots. I feel like I'm going to pass out for all the flashing.
But the performance is very good, and that's what matters most imo.

The dvd was awesome, and I agreed a lot with that interview, specially the part about that they could play more rare songs like "skycrapper", "Victory" or maybe "Heaven is falling" but i cant complaint a lot, they played piano version "Cease" and great songs like "STF" and "Along The Way". One more thing, I COULDNT HEAR Greg Hetson guitar solos!!!! so frustrating...and Brooks slow down a litle bit in some songs like Anesthesia slow parts please. Thats All, the DVD Was fucking awesome.

Brett's voice is the most consistent among him, Jay, and Brian.
Then again, he stands in the same place during nearly the entire performance, while Hetson and Jay are 2 seconds from performing backflips and cartwheels.

I know BR's backup vocals are often very poor. However, in live videos over the years, they do sometimes have shows where they are pretty on key, and really not to bad. I'm betting on the DVD they didn't redo any of the vocals, they would just make the person who was most on key the dominant voice in the mix. So sometimes brian's voice is the loudest, but when his voice is off, and jays is in key, he'll be the loudest in the mix. Anyone agree? Also remember that brett's there too, and I've found his backups to be a little tighter than the other guys. A

hi there, in comparison to lagwagons live record almost nothing has been doctored on the dvd...why? listen to the capers voice and the powerful sound ...this is post-production at its best but br's dvd seems to be just mixed up to sound more polished..the performance is simply br, simply amazing!!!!

i think its just the proper mixing that make them sound so perfect. when you are in the audience or listening to a cheap bootleg you wont hear the same quality. and also dont forget its mixed for 5.1 surround, the difference between the 5.1 sound and the 2 channel mix (5.1 downmixed) is huge. when you think the guitars sound weak or the backing vocals and guitars are not loud enough, i assume you just listened to the 2 channel version, that was at least my experience.

As I have not yet heard the DVD, and only seen Bad Religion live on stuff downloaded from bad-religion.net, I've always thought that background vocals sucked live because the band were playing live, and are too busy concentrating on playing their instruments.
I've also noticed that Jay always seems to be standing too far away from the mic, so it barely picks his voice up.
However, as it's a live DVD, they might have realised that it would be looked at more closely than a normal live performance, and put more even more effort into the backing vocals.

well quite often the backing vocals sound good the only problem seems to be the volume, either on the mics or them just not singing loud enough, maybe they took a little more time to get the acoustics perfect on this one, or maybe they were doctored :p

Does anyone notice the backing vocals are a little too good? Do you think they just had an exemplary night or they were doctored in the studio?

pretty decent review. i definitely would love it if we could get a follow up dvd some day that has a setlist made up of songs NOT on this dvd. i like these songs, but hearing bad religion play SOME rare songs would be awesome. they could even cut it from various real shows, so that the band could still play the "hits" so to speak.i also think that most of their catalog is better than los angeles is burning and could do without songs like that.

Tim Den is great all around music journalist. His writing for lollipop magazine has always been top notch. No complaints here about his article. Off the 1st reading anyway.
