First Avenue, located at 701 First Avenue North in Minneapoolis, MN., is considered a historic music venue in the United States. It is still in operation today.
First Avenue originally opened in 1937 as the Northland Greyhound Bus Depot. In 1968, the depot relocated leaving the building without a tenant. Allan Fingerhut, a 25 year old Minneapolis native, invested $150,000 to turn the vacant space into a downtown music venue named "The Depot." In 1981, under new ownership, the venue became known as "First Avenue," with a renewed focus on booking national music acts. Music artist Prince, a Minneapolis native, made the space his regular venue, testing new material and recording his movie, Purple Rain, inside the venue. Notable acts to perform at First Avenue: Frank Zappa, Ike & Tina Turner, The Ramones, Black Flag, R.E.M., Husker Du, and Run DMC.[1]
